Ok I'm sure someone has commented on the fact that the Calcium nitrate was dried, then the beaker was cleaned out with liquid, and poured back into the rest the Calcium nitrate. What was the point of drying it?
@perrygershin3946
@perrygershin3946 6 ай бұрын
I dried the calcium nitrate so I could get an accurate weight. This value was required to do the calculation for the amount of sulfuric acid I would need to balance the reaction without an excess if either starting ingredient. Once the dry weight was known it no longer mattered if there was water mixed with it. One mistake I made is that I should have weighed the empty beaker first. That's why I had to remove it all from the beaker so I could weigh it empty.

I learned something new today.I was seeing that the church of scientology are making L.P. records out of stainless steel (for keeping future historical records) which have an incredible lifespan, but in order for them to be cut (recording grooves). They are nickel plating them first.....at first I thought my leg was being pulled....but Wow...
@MadScientist267

And if it's true, the cut is in the nickel, not the stainless. Brilliant 🤦‍♂️

I stumbled upon something needed to clean the glass insets of a lamp I was restoring for a home I was working on for a customer, someone mentioned the toilet bowl cleaner "The Works" to clean it and it did work very well getting all the old rust stains off the glass, it also managed to change my stainless steel sink into more of a gunmetal black color, it didn't rust as I recall, wondering if that could be substituted for the hot copper chloride step?

I’m not sure whether *_specific gravity_* (density) will indicate the percentage concentration of H2SO4. That is only valid if the only other ingredient is pure water. Otherwise, you would need to know what the other ingredient was and what its specific gravity is.
@SciDOCMBC
@SciDOCMBC 8 ай бұрын
1. Calculating H2SO4 via density would only be accurate if it was just H2SO4 + H2O. Drain cleaner H2SO4 also contains organic components that are intended to prevent pipes from being attacked and they usually have a high density. In addition, dyes are usually added. The calculated concentration cannot therefore be correct. 2. I can only warn everyone not to use not purified drain cleaner H2SO4. The organic inhibitors contained therein can be nitrated by the resulting HNO3. As long as you don't know exactly which inhibitors are contained, it can be an explosive surprise.

Mix 150g of kno3 and 100g of destil. Water when it disolve mix it with 150mil of h2so4 and let it cool to room temp after that put it in freezer ald wrap it in plastic bag(all in glass that you combined it in) after 4h minimum remove from freezer and filter it thats easiest method You need to heat it up to work

Fortunately for me if it's a 68% nitric acid solution that I want it's not necessary to synthesize it myself since it's completely legal in South Australia to buy small amounts of 68 % nitric acid online (single containers of a capacity of no more than 5 liters). However fuming nitric acid particularly white fuming nitric acid is probably much more tightly controlled than 68 % nitric acid in South Australia because white fuming nitric acid is significantly more dangerous than 68% nitric acid so there may be legal restrictions on white fuming nitric acid in South Australia.
@buggsy5
@buggsy5 9 ай бұрын
The primary reason for the nitric acid restrictions is that nitric acid is a primary component for most high explosives. There are a number of ways to purify gold without the use of aqua regia.

You have given a great example of why distillation is the preference method. Far less waste. Much higher yield and a far higher concentration of end product. I can use potassium nitrate and 99% Sulfuriccavid and produce 99.2%-99.7% nitric acid. Keeping the glass wear light shielded it has very low NoX. Running air bubbler with the air running thru a desiccant tube to a bubbler at the bottom of a graduated cylinder full of the red fuming HNO3 my end product is 99.7% white fuming nitric acid. Kept in double walled ptfe or my glass container in my lab frig it holds its purity for many months with extremely low rate decomp.

Sorry, but no. The sulfate produced by this reaction must be insoluble so it will precipitate out of solution. Sodium and potassium sulfates are soluble so they will not precipitate.

@@perrygershin3946 Yep. i found the reason. It’s a bug in the iOS KZbin app. It sometimes shows the likes count for a previous video you watched, rather than the current one. Just one of many bugs… their developers just don’t seem to care about these bugs, because apparently they’ve been there for years with no fix.

Adding sodium was not a great way to react the aluminium as you can easily complex it and get a mixture of sodium aluminate with various sodium aluminate carbonates unless the two were in a somewhat exact perfect mixture. I suppose your Alum was hydrated meaning you used way too little compared to pure anhydrous. Try to heat the alum to see if it looses water.
