#Ghana, considered by many to be the greatest paradigm of economic development for African countries, has been enjoying one of the best economic positions in impoverished sub-Saharan #Africa for the past 40 years.
However, this shining African star has come up against one of the biggest brakes for developing economies: debt. The region is being plagued by this phantom that already haunted Latin America in the 1980s, and collapse seems imminent.
How did Ghana become the perfect example to follow in Africa? And how has it also become an example to avoid in recent years? Are we at the beginning of a new era of deep crisis in Africa?

Thank you for talking about my country and I'll add context. Ghana was an economic success until 2016 where the Akufo-Addo and Bawuliar administration took over. For context of how bad they performed the exchange rate under previous presidents was. Kufuor = $1: GHC1 Atta Mills = $1 : GHC 2 Mahama = $1 : GHC 3.8 Akufo-Addo = $1 : GHC 13.11 Ghana is in a very rough patch but elections are in November and hopefully a new government can turn things around.

Did you see the whole video it started under Mahama. After Mahama left things got better but the Akuffo Addo government didn’t prepare well for any potential dangers. NDC and NPP have been our problem since Rawlings and after him Kuffour left office.

You forgotten the rede-nomination of the Ghana cedi automatically make 1$ to be 1GHC , it was 1$ to 10,000ghc until the rede-nomination that cut off 0000 zeros , today it has weaken to 1$ to 14GHC . Rede-nomination doesn't change currency value but mere numerical numbers for easy transaction... Ghana has always been on debt default,in the early 2000 she got debt relive from foreign countries...now Ghana is on another debt default with another IMF bailout exercise ongoing

Ghana will overcome but it will have to take some painful fiscal decisions such as the ones currently going on in Nigeria as at 2024.. By the way, Nigeria's refineries are making a come back. The state owned refineries are currently being overhauled with that of Port Harcourt set to resume production in 2024. While private refineries are also coming up too. Dangote refinery which is the largest single train refinery in the world at 650,000bpd has already begun supplying diesel to the Nigerian market and will start gasoline supply by May 2024. All these will help ease pressure on the country's foreign reserves and gradually strengthen the naira as well as reduce inflation. At this point, the recently increased interest rate will gradually start dropping which will help stimulate local productivity as credits become a bit more accessible and more affordable for businesses (especially with the increased bank capitalisation). This will all take a while to manifest meaningfully in the lives of Nigerians but eventually it will be noticeable by all.

I was in Ghana when the 50% inflation hit around the Russo-Ukraine war,,, pretty wild year for the world economy, but it was even more wild to see the hit the Ghanaians got by commparison. Ghana now is somewhat more unsafe for foreigners (2024), though not that it really matter. Ghana is still very safe, and much safer than most countries (including European ones) around the world. Also social projects weren't the problem (especially education, here Ghana really needed an upgrade regardless), but combined with cutting taxes, debt-ghost, insane Covid measures, Mr:Addo drastically expanding ministerial positions that were stacked by his family and friend, along massive increase in expenditure by government officials (including ministers),,,, and ofc other things added to the sad decline of Ghana's economy.

As for why Ghana is comparatively safe,,, honestly can't find any other reason, than that Ghanaians are very peaceful people (sometimes to a fault). The African countries all have the same basic problems with tribalism at its core. Unity is hard to achieve and corruption is hard to resist with too many loopholes and obstacles to good governance in place. The solution lies in African unity and African resources to support African financial institutions. Outsiders have been the bane of Africa for centuries, from the Middle East to Europe and today from Asia. It would be great to have an African United Nations and this is a worthy goal but it’s going to take a very charismatic African leader to take charge, light the fuse for future growth and sustain growth by sheer willpower. Someone like African born Elon Musk or perhaps the despotic and ruthless MBS of Saudi Arabia who is on a high risk journey to completely overhaul his country in less than a decade. I think it’s possible that a suitable person might be from the African American community or perhaps a visionary from Asia Pacific countries?

How can you criticise Akufo Addo for making high school free for all Ghanaians and in the same breath ridicule Ghana for having a dearth of skilled workers (by the way, try being educated in a language completely different to the one you speak at home)? I'm sceptical of Akufo Addo's actions only when they receive praise from political and economic pundits in the West. May leaders from the global South continue to ignore the nonsense advice from the West and do what is in their people's best interests.

If you were from Ghana you will understand that the so called free education is more expensive than paying education. The lack of infrastructure before the implementation has also reduced the education hours I'm such that student sit at home for months (3÷) waiting for their turn to use the classrooms. You can't produce a world class workforce by promoting an elitist education system that only people with money, rather than brains, can access. Sure, you can import skilled workers and pay them 20x what you pay local workers, but if foreigners are running your economy, is it really your country anymore? To me there's nothing like "Elitist Educational System" as you are suggesting that am proposing because you first need the education to become an elite per today's standards. I agree with you on the fact that the educational system needs funding and that's the current problem, if you don't have funds for something then you don't propose it to be free (a basic demand and supply concept). Now you can't provide classrooms, teachers, books and the very materials that students require to be educated so how have you helped the masses struggling to get the space. Today secondary school students in Ghana go to school for 2-3 months and come to sit at home for 3 months where some students indulge in social vices with teenage pregnancy, child labor in the mining sector, low educational standards and heavy cost of private substitute education to buffer months lost from sitting at home. Free SHS has taken a toll on citizens via the introduction and increment of various taxes including e-levy, garbage taxes, GET funds etc. These instances along corruption, nepotism, hoarding, tribal governance and bigotry has been the modus operandi of this president, that is why one leader has borrowed more money than all governments in the history of the 4th republic of Ghana put together yet has nothing to show for except to say Free Senior high school thats breeding illiterates, homosexuality, lesbianism and all the newly introduced curriculum that teaches our children same sex preference. As we sit today this president has refused to sign a bill the Parliament has passed to abolish LGBTQ practices in the republic of Ghana.

Second, I believe you've misunderstood my use of the word elitist in this context. Any system of education that grants access only to people who can afford to pay for it is elitist. It's not a judgement of the people seeking education, but the system itself. I don't understand those who criticise Akufo Addo for giving every young adult in Ghana access to free secondary education. While the execution of it may be criticised, the intent behind it is noble, in my opinion. What's needed is greater funding to ensure standards remain high, not a reversion to the way things were. You cannot find the best people to push Ghana's economy forward with their talents and creations if you promote an education system that limits the talent pool. If the problem is finding the money to support a universal education system then I am sure there is more than one way to skin a cat. Surely such a modest ambition is not beyond Ghana with it's relatively small population. After all, other developing countries with fewer resources than Ghana have managed it.

again this video is false, Ghana is just a basic country in Africa that’s rising slowly, you can’t compare it to South Africa, South Africa city so modern, even more modern than American cities and most European cities, South Africa has a space program, South Africa isn’t even more developed than Angola, Luanda, Angola against Accra Ghana, and you find out that Luanda is more developed, Ghana is not even as developed as its neighbor the Ivory Coast, compare Acana to Abidjan ivory Coast and you will see a far more developed city in Ivory Coast, which I call Little New York, even though technically is bigger than New York, and it’s so far behind the educated, beautiful Kenya that has built two smart cities at the same time, they built tattoo city, and they built Konza Technopolis, the most advanced city in Africa, and Nairobi is much more developed in advanced then Ghana

It has really striked me how much it is mentioned about colononialism as the deepest root to all Africas problem today when we have great example of growing economies such as India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia etc who suffered a lot through european colonalism. The blame game is never going to lift a country up from poverty. Fun fact during those times, ask any european how well they were treated during industrialism (when kids died in factories) or any farmer who was starving to death trying to farm potato, white europeans were still sold to slaves during the Ottoman Empire during that time. There is so many factors that plays a role of economicial failure, especially miss mangament from goverment spending. Anyway the African countries who is showing the best example is Rwanda, that country is working hard together no matter its past!

Next time, I hope (but don't expect) you'll point out that countries like Ghana face export tariffs into markets like the Europe which are not only bad for their farmers, but also bad for consumers in Europe. Our governments are also responsible for stifling developing countries' growth.

Just not too long ago, Ghana finally gained full control of a Dam that was owned by foreign company. Now 75% of Ghana's population has access to electricity. Now compared to North Africa where most countries populations have access to electricity for more than 90%, Ghana's recent achievement is nothing. So what, Ghana has some electricity now, it'll take long for businesses to operate properly let alone attract foreign investment.

Good luck to Ghana from India. If Ghana has a major economic boom, it will be a new destination for Indians to look for jobs and residency.
