I was playing this after I play Crusader and I was like... why this two game feel so much alike but so different. Only years later I found out... oh it using the same engine except crusader is an advance version and uses it correctly... instead of Ultima who trying to make it into a platformer but fail big time....

*Heavy sigh*... Yet another person criticising the Ultima Underworld games that clearly didn't play them when they were new. I did play this when it was brand new and never had a problem with figuring out how to get down to the sewers. It was not "new player unfriendly". Which, BTW, I didn't have the manual when I played it or internet or youtube guides like you do today. So, even if you wanna try to use the "excuse" of being a "retrospective". Your point is still invalid because a new player today can easily lookup a guide and learn how to get into the sewers with no problem.

The beauty of the internet is that you can make your own video where you can share your own thoughts and experiences, which may be very different of those from other people! Then you can also have people who have an inaccurate view of who you are create a fantasy version of you and say you're wrong because they had a different experience! It's magical.

the jumping/platforming was just crap.. it reminds me of 'feature creep' and it has no real issue honestly. You said it, death is permanent and falling into the pits without jumping properly means death.. and so save scumming.. was that the intention? Poor game design. In fact I think this game has tones of poor game design choices.

⚠️ Warning about the lore (spelling?) System used to level up your health in this game: years ago, i sucked every ounce of blood i could find, and it broke the game. Near the end of the game i leveled health too many times, and when I loaded it back up, I had NO HEALTH. The whole health meter was atrophied. I could move, but if I jumped, I died. Had to start over. I've never been so greedy ever since

Sometimes I think that old school games back there were more close to the future than most modern games nowadays. Watch System Shock is like watching Alien technologies, hard to believe that this was created by humans, an absolute sci-fi masterpiece.

Had you played the game blindly (authentically), you would have developed a more natural understanding of the game's lore/world, tools and mechanics, what is each best for and also what is best for your gameplay preferences, ie the fun of it without the need of stating, sometimes inaccurately, the obvious. Or, as the developers meant it for the player to discover things for themselves as part of the world's attraction through its natural dangers, secrets & magic and your exploration and journey through it (just for the record, you can dispose of zombies in way more ways than one - if you choose so, which is again part of the poetry of discovery and adapting it to your playstyle as you go). Also and rather importantly, the world changes with each higher difficulty (more tasks/loot/more npcs/enemies/areas to explore, necessity of different approaches, simply more content), underscoring both the exploration and player's gameplay evolution aspect. So for any in-depth summary I would also expect a reviewer to definitely finish it on Expert.

Indeed, it is difficult for me to authentically play a game blind in 2024, when I played it blind in the late 90's and have played it dozens of times since. Which is why I don't pretend I haven't played a game I have, but instead try to also look at things from a perspective which may be obvious to someone already knowledgable with the game, and might even seem nitpicky or overly critical. But that's the idea, it might be that for a lot, but I also try to make these in a way where people with 0 knowledge or even intent to play the games would get a decent understanding. Warts and all, since even greatness has flaws.

@nanao.292 I have, multiple times. If you want to see one of those times, you can go to Twitch and watch the full playthrough where I go through the series on expert. I thought I explained why for this purpose I didn't, because especially with Thief 2 the loot hunting just becomes tedious instead of being fun for me.

Actually, only Monitor follows one of the Principles. The other two rejected them because they went against what they personally believed (the Mages of Moon believed that magic required the existence of illusion to function, so they rejected the concept of undeniable Truth; the people of Fawn held beauty above all else, so felt no need for unconditional Love). I think Marsten himself tells you this if you ask him about it. And even then, Monitor follows Courage in a strange way; they turned the principle into a rigid, duty-bound code to be followed rather than the true, virtuous expression that Lord British envisioned.

Similar to the first game, I have very fond memories of this one as well. As I started playing it back in the days when it was released I was joined by my mother, watching me playing the game, being fully immersed into the story and gameplay. She even stayed up past midnight despite having to go to work in the morning. To this day we joke about that one playsession in which I wasn't able to find the special gloves. I simply overlooked them in the right shop, so I visited the other shops as well. It took me quite some time to recognise the gloves. What a mess - but a very funny incident. My mother isn't a gamer herself - but she was always interested in my hobbies and the stories that come out of them. So Thief: Deadly Shadows is not only a very entertaining game, but a hoard of great memories to me.
