US Open 1983 SF Lendl vs. Arias

Arias seriously pummelled his forehand with that wooden racket. Lendl had the biggest forehand at the time, but Jimmy really went after it more often. Unfortunately he never went on to achieve these results again even though he played into the early 90s. He was a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for posting the video.

Arias' follow through on his topspin backhand looks a bit too much. I wonder if it cost him in recovery time for the next shot. Arias could trade forehands with Lendl, but that's about it. Lendl's serve and backhand were way better than Arias'.

I always thought Arias was Lendl Light. A good, solid player with a big forehand, but not quite at Lendl's caliber. Ironically, Lendl was not a Nick Bollettieri protege because his game could have come straight from Nick's school. Big serve, big inside-out forehand. And fitness/training as commandment #1!
