The book from Harry Gruyaert is the third one I bought. I also have "Between Worlds", which is my favourite and "Last Call". All of them are great though. Harry Gruyaert is one of my favourite photographers.

A great selection of books Rupert, each photographer with a distinctive style. I don't know if he has published a book, but Dominic Dahncke is a street photographer with a captivating style based around clever and often humerous observations of light and shadow, often his own. His work is featured in a video on the Black and White Profusion channel. He's worth a look if you don't already know him.

Rupert, If I had to choose only one, I‘d go for Ray K. Metzker. Unfortunatly , his books are hardly to find and if so incredible expensive … there is a great exhibition of his works in Brussels these days…all the best, Carsten

Really enjoyed that, I own that Saul Leiter book and a different one by Haas (who I prefer) which is New York 52 - 62. You are quite correct though, you cant beat a good photography book, they are books you'll keep going back to over and over.

I came across your KZbin channel through fstoppers site. So far I like it, as it is the kind of street photography that I shoot. I also ended up buying your book lol. Keep up the good work. Regards from Malta.

Hello again, Rupert. Thanks to your review on that book, there now is a little more than 3.9 kilograms of freshly arrived Moriyama-books on my living room table, just waiting to be thoroughly examined by my curious eyes! I invested in both of them... Jan Robert Bøe, Norway

I still don't understand how people use white backdrops for pictures on KZbin, which makes it burning in the eyes and unwatchable at the time most people watch YT videos...🤷♂

Do you have your viewfinder set to show your composition in b&w.. or is the b&w only achieved in post? (i made a complete hash of asking a simple question!)

Viewfinder is always in colour, b&w in post.

Thanks Rupert for a really helpful and inspiring video, with some fabulous images demonstrating the 'negative space' theme. You pack a lot into 7 mins - all killer, no filler! I wish more YT content creators would follow your example. Less is definitely more.
@foisonurlubu430325 күн бұрын
Merci monsieur. Nice and good but you don't tell us how to practicly create negative space ! I guess you underexpose by at least 2 stops in bright day light and adapt exposure in postproduction? Oh yes, one may also use the spotmetering of course and choose the lightest part of the subject. Anything else gentleman? Merci monsieur.

Got some nice city shots here in Munich with my NIKON this February in the clear, strong early afternoon light. Dialed the MC (Monochrome) setting of the D850 to highest contrast and enhanced sharpness. Worked great. In RAW of course. So there is always the color option left.

Great stuff, interesting theme. Your picture on the wall fits my collection of special covers perfectly: Every "1984" I can find - plus a dozen I designed by myself, just as a hobby. Of course using my own pictures. 20 or so years ago, I designed a couple of book covers for money. But mostly not using stock pictures but stuff I shot especially for the covers. The use of an art picture by Crewdson I find astonishing: this would mean (some of) his work can be bought via a stock agency, like Getty Images...? Just one little thing: please do some research on French pronunciation! It's all wrong here, alas.
@rupertvandervellАй бұрын
Yes, I'm afraid my French pronunciation is rather lacking! Good point about the Crewdson, I was surprised to see it. Works well on the cover though.

Your Moriyama inspired photos are excellent, Rupert. This inspires me to do the same. I have been a point and shoot type, with mixed results. But the law of averages correctly means one gets enough keepers in this day of digital to keep on just shooting away. Occasionally I have gotten a really good photo even when i haven't remembered to change settings for the light. Great video, thanks. to change settings

Thank you for your useful reviews and thoughts about street photography, as always. You mention 424 pages, but however, I cannot find others than 352 pages versions for sale. Are there different editions out there?

My mistake, it is 352 pages, apologies, have trimmed the video.

There is a prequel to this book called Record (still in print) which does have 424 pages. That book is equally as excellent as this second volume Record 2. 👌🏻
