How much and how often should I feed my 8 week old husky
@puncAF Жыл бұрын
1. Talk to your vet. 2. I follow the bag recommendations pretty strictly when they're a puppy. My vets, who have worked with hundreds of sled dogs, say that the dog will grow into its full size sooner or later. The danger is feeding too much too fast: bones and joints can grow faster than they should, resulting in later joint issues. Have fun!

Chris, I was unable to find a Vet that could stop my dog from having seizures. Sasha, my female husky had neurological issues that could not be fixed with phenobarbital. I ended up killing her because she was suffering. I loved her more than anything or anyone else in the world. It hurts so bad that I may never get over it! I told my wife not to get a puppy over a year ago but she did it anyway. My wife became so jealous of Sasha and shed no tears after Sasha was gone. I'm 56 and had many bad experiences during my life but this has been the worst experience. What have I got to live for? Having to kill someone you love to stop their suffering is a very difficult thing to get over.

Chris, I saw how you love your huskies and I can relate to you. Sasha, my female husky slept next to me every night. To watch her suffer with seizures and the effects was very painful. After trying and hoping for help from veterinarians that was not to be. I made the tough decision to put her out of her misery and it hurts. Six days later and I'm still crying! I have two male huskies and they love pulling me on the sled. But now I'm afraid to get another female husky to have puppies. A Vet told me 20% of them develop seizures. I can't go through this again! I loved Sasha more than words can say. I don't have the ability not to love my dogs and treat them as livestock. Maybe it's best to just give up on my dream to have a team of huskies for mushing?
@peacefulmind15592 жыл бұрын
Chris, I was offered Sasha's sister for free and I turned it down. I'm trying to get to root cause of dog seizures and Google is not giving me any info. It's NOT natural for a living creature to go through what our dogs are going through! I have honey bees and yes they have been killed by crop farmer's chemicals many times, problem answered. Why are dog owners not questioning dog idiopathic epilepsy? We need to solve this problem! When did Siberian huskies start have these issues? Do you know any older people in your community that might know?

hey. just discovered this channel. I want to train my german mix to pull a sled in the winter and possibly a small cart during the other seasons. reason for personal carrying items, and to carrying my smaller older dog. I have a channel as well and do loads of hiking, but my little dog cant get out and about in winter, there is yet a small enough bootie to fit his tiny feet (3lbs) and so i figured if i can get my girl to haul a sled/cart she can be of use to him. while we dont do LONG hikes or walks, maybe 3 hours to 5 hours max at one time (but possible a few times through the day including late night and early morning, i'd love to be able to have her do some work and him to be able to get out and about more, especially in the colder months. Any tips or advice?
@puncAF2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley! Hope your idea works out. I'm afraid, though, that I'm not sure about how to train other breeds of dogs to pull. Some dogs do it! Some dogs don't! But huskies are bred to love it. If you wanted to see what happens, get your dog in harness, put something in front of your dog that she wants (like you, or a friend with a treat), and let her get used to the idea of pulling. If that works out, see if she'll pull with you behind her. Good luck!

Hi Chris, seasonal greetings from Wales in the UK. I've never reached out anyone posting but I wanted to thank you for posting all the wonderful RSD videos. I meant to do this for a long time, never got round to, until now. As this 2022 draws to a close it prompted me to finally pull my finger out and hit the tiny keyboard. You haven't posted for a long time, I guess you shared all you wanted to, also I can imagine that making these videos takes a lot more time and effort than the finished products show. That's the skill ( and curse) of an artist: to make it look easy and effortless. I hope you and your family and loved ones and of course your sled dogs including Noun and Verb and the others are and have been saved and spared any serious harm or damage from the recent bomb cyclone. Thank you for having been generous with your time. It's nice to go back to your videos abd watch a few episodes on a re-run. I enjoy not only watching the dogs but also how you interact with them and the reciprocal affection between you and them. No to mention to glimpses of the beautiful surroundings in Fairbanks. I own a rescue dog Husky with the canine equivalent of ADHD. he's loveliest if utterly daft thing. Your videos remind me of his potential and encourage me to forgive his shortcomings. Living in Wales snow is at an extremel premium anyway, so I live in hope that one day I can manange to let him pull at least the sled dog scooter he inherited. At the moment he would gladly drive me through the hedge or up the tree in pursuit of one of the many squirrels he can spot/ smell from miles away way way before me. Thanks again Chris. Wishing you and yours a Happy and Healthy 2023. Andreas

Hi Andreas! What a nice note! I appreciate it. Very kind! I have, indeed, stopped making videos. It's less about the time editing takes and more about the idea that I always wanted a camera around to film the fun instead of just enjoying the moments. We have recently picked up two more puppies, and they are now part of our little six-dog team. We're having a good winter here! Your dog sounds very much like a dog! I suggest getting a handful more! What could go wrong? Thanks again, and may your 2023 have lots of dogs in it! Chris

Chris, I've enjoyed watching you love your dogs. I'm a middle aged Michigander dreaming of having a team of Siberian huskies for mushing. I managed to get a pair of puppies for future breeding but the female developed epilepsy before she reached one year old. I was told by a Vet 20% of dogs develop epilepsy and to have her neutered. How common is epilepsy up North? I also have honey bees that are constantly killed by the toxic chemicals from crop farmers and a wife who has had breast cancer. What caused my puppy to develop epilepsy? If it is rare up North where no crop farming is occurring, then maybe it is the toxic chemicals! Any info you could share with me would help, thank you.
@puncAF2 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your dog! I do have a friend up here whose dog had epilepsy. I talked with a vet I know, and she said that she doesn't know of any connection; that as tragic as these things are, maybe it's just genetic. That said, 20% seems high!
@peacefulmind15592 жыл бұрын
@@puncAF The Vet put her on phenobarbital and wants to neuter her. She still had a seizure on the med. I'm going to take her off the med and try CBD oil.Also going to hold off on neutering her. What do mushers with large numbers of dogs do with a dog that has epilepsy?

They gave me Sasha's younger brother and I'll wait and see what happens with him but he will be spayed. I already have an outstanding male, just need a good female. I need to find proof/research of a genetic link before I make a decision on getting a single liter from Sasha. Sasha is Amazing, I really don't want to kill her blood line.

I wish I knew what to do! My dogs are okay at this, but I can't claim complete control. Sled dogs like to pull! I've found having the control of a bike brake or a sled reinforces the idea that they HAVE to slow down whether they want to or not. I say "easy" before I say "whoa," trying to reinforce that they should be slowing down. Also, I try not to do "easy" training until the dogs are already tired. Hope this helps! I can show that these techniques are at least somewhat effective because I am alive after biking with four big dogs hooked to me all summer!

The one you see in the intro is a European sled I bought at a yard sale. It's a really good sled, can take a beating, but a bit heavy. It's like shoes. Sometimes you want sneakers. Sometimes you want hiking boots.

Love this! Think you go faster on a bike compared to a sled? How does it feel different? More control? They make ski attachments for your front fork(rear is a wheel for when it's necessary to pedal), what are your thoughts on this progression? I've found even the fattest of fat bikes are impossible when the fluff gets to be like 8 inches... have a good one:)

No easy answers! It’s all relative to temps, snow hardness. And I haven’t tried a ski in front, but yeah, when the snow is fluffy and soft, bikejoring is impossible.

This is a very interesting training philosophy. It seems to be based on the idea that these dogs are instinctively pack animals. The traditional Inuit philosophy, which is based on thousands of years of experience in conditions that demand peak performance by the dogs, however, is more analogous to human military training. The Inuit would never suggest to the dogs that they are their equals. Instead, they emphasize that they are on a higher hierarchical level. They feed and care for their dogs, but they do not hesitate to use pain as a disciplinary tool, for example.
