So glad you are having a conversation about this. I'm still going through the video but in case it isn't covered the Fair Labor Standards Act allows employers to pay disabled employees less than the minimum wage and my quick Google search supports that Goodwill is guilty of this(don't mind be corrected if this is wrong). If they truly supported disabled workers they would pay them a fair wage. 'Ending Poverty Through the Power of Work' is not taking advantage of disabled workers by giving them employment and underpaying them. Very interesting discussion Michael! And as to the 'non-profit' status there are a multitude of ways that non-profits manage their monies, some more self-interested than others.

Interesting. I was right about Goodwill. I used to donate good stuff to GW but I stopped because I didn't see my donated items on the shelves -ever. Now I just donate to local charity thrift stores.

I have been well aware of the beginnings of Goodwill - as well as other thrift stores. My mother grew up in the 30s with a single mom raising a family of 4 and thrift shops got them through very often. And I absolutely hate it when a reseller goes into a thrift store, sees a while stack of identical items and takes them all. There is one person in particular in Vegas who often fills two carts and just takes everything her hot little hands can grab. Of course if something is chipped or damaged, she sweetly says, "We'll leave this for someone else." Makes me want to scream. I think of all the kids out there who would love to have one of her cart full of squishmallows under that bare Christmas tree. And the parents who could use the other things she piles up. Then she brags about 'I paid 4 dollars for something worth 1,000" and complains about Goodwill.com. Goodwill.com raises extra money so that Goodwill can open more stores and employ more people in need. I have even watched her hold auctions in thrift stores - selling off things she hadn't even bought yet - right off their shelves while putting people at the ends of the aisles with carts to block others from getting by, I have blocked her and will never watch her again, She needs to look up the definition of "Goodwill" because she ain't it. Think about the people who depend on Goodwill to dress their kids, celebrate holidays and birthdays and maintain the best home they can for their families. I would never so something like that. Besides, I agree that you can do better shopping in local antique stores and malls - and help locals to earn a living

Anyone who is retired and receiving SSA already - and those on SSI - will never qualify for additional disabilty assitance as you age futher. As someone who has worked five years as an "participant in a Title V program" (LIKE Godwill) you can't make above a certain amount (minimum wage only and lower - if the facility you work in has few employees), you may not be able to wrk the minimum 25 hours per week - if you depend on State DSHS for Medicaid or Food Stamps. Would love to talk with others with similar issues. Thank you,Michael. - you did great! Brigid

Hey, you’re talking about the lists they have to tell their people what to look for…I’m a customer mind you…I saw those lists. The store I was in had them taped to the door in the driveway where you donated. I saw it. I read it. They weren’t hiding it. I stood there and read it while hubby was unloading the car! I thought it was weird but whatever.

I had that pegasus My Little Pony, the pink and blue. I still have it at my mom's house, but not just for sentimental reasons. Unfortunately, it fell victim to the day a lot of kids go through, when they learn cut hair (in this case the tail) doesn't grow back on dolls.

The social stores in my area get 5 € for each so called disabled workers per hour whereas the worker only gets 1 € per hour. So they even earn on the workers. They had one Russian worker who stood a bit higher than the other and he sold a lot of the incomings to other Russians in the internet but he got fired. But the top manager is doing no better. And people who they know that they check that they find ways to tell them you are not allowed to come to our shop any more. Happened to friends of mine.
@estherkinzelmann48753 күн бұрын
Don't think that this kind of shit is not happening in Europe Michael. We even have shops like goodwill where the head of the workers take all the good stuff out of the donations for private possession without paying anything for it. When one is fired after years of 'stealing" the next one comes in and is better in hiding. Sometimes the workers get small things too. Believe me I saw what was coming it and saw that they were hiding it outside and put it in their cars. This is run by the city but even politicians come and get their antiques for pennies. They also have so called disabled workers from a social Organisation who can earn a few Euros a day.

My husband and I were just discussing that type issue here in US. A string of thrift stores here in our area, benefitting veterans, has gradually stopped having anything of quality. They used to have really nice things. But even now there isn’t as much merchandise as in the past. We were wondering if some items weren’t being “liberated”.

@MaxJasper-ek3yi4 күн бұрын
Goodwill is nothing like they where when they started they use to the help the disability community and but now there CEO makes millions and millions of dollars a year and a few years ago along with several so called charities that help people got in trouble for misleading how they use there funds they get to help people there board and CEO also got in trouble and had to pay big fines for taking kickbacks and fraud there and on a side note they don't give jobs to people on the autism spectrum good will is a disgusting company
