Hi. Great job. I’m considering taking on this project. But in the whole video, you didn’t show us the interior from the cockpit angle. The wall leading off into the opposite side of the ship. Could we get some close up shots of the full interior please?

How do I make the base
@mattsmodelshop

The base was made by a friend of mine who no longer has the facilities to make them. The top was made by hdamodelworx.com. It's a really great look for the model, though a bit large. If I were to do it again, I'd make it about half the size.

Nice update. Curious about something I have seen with a few refits. The area right above the fantail, where it "meets" the top of the secondary hull never seems to go down nor lock in smoothly. Always appears the top of the secondary hull is raised more than it should or worse there is a gap between the fantail and hull. In this vid it looks slightly raised, perhaps just the vid. Not pointing out perceived flaws, I am working on my own refit and think I will have a similar problem. Have you seen this before and how do you deal with it if so? Thanks.
@mattsmodelshop
@mattsmodelshop 3 ай бұрын
There's about zero room in there to get the top of the hull to sit flush against the fantail. If you put any LEDs in there, it just becomes that much harder. On this one, I got it pretty close. On my last one, I had to be creative. YMMV. Use SMDs and work with it to try to get it to close. That's all I've got. 😃

Matt, the 350 Refit I finished last year was largely due to the insights from your build series. I am about to tackle my 2nd 350 Refit, and watching your series as a refresher. Can you remind me if you ever discussed using the window inserts? I left those out last time, mostly to avoid having to do all that masking, and will probably leave them out again. I was going to use some form of crystal set window product, but then discovered the aztec decals actually cover the windows with a transparency, and just went with that. Thanks.
@mattsmodelshop

I actually left the window inserts out on this particular kit. Believe it or not, the aztec decals did a good job diffusing the light. Anytime it tears away, I fill the window with canopy glue. Good luck with your second kit! It's a challenge doing one let alone two! Have fun!

Thank you for posting this build as I am going to be using many of your techniques. I do have one question to ask you regarding how you sanded all the raised astec details, and smoothed it out. My question is while sanding those details, did you end up sanding over all the lifeboats/escape pods? I want to sand those lines down myself, but I am worried about the square lifeboats. I feel that those should retain the raised look, and those squares are barely raised to begin with. Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
@mattsmodelshop
@mattsmodelshop 10 ай бұрын
I mostly tried to sand the lines down but left the lifeboats. I also tried not to sand around the windows, as you need to keep the indents so you can scrape them out. I would suggest scraping the windows quickly after each layer of primer/paint, as the more cured it gets, the harder it is to scrape off.
@TrekBuilder
@TrekBuilder 10 ай бұрын
First off, thank you kindly for the response. I will give it a go and hope for the best. I'm actually not lighting this one, so painting in the windows shouldn't be difficult. I'm more concerned how close those lines get to the lifeboats, and around them, but I guess with a little care and patience I should be successful. Do you happen to recall what grit sandpaper you used?

@mattsmodelshop
@mattsmodelshop 10 ай бұрын
I just wash the parts with soapy water, then spray with primer (usually krylon or something equally inexpensive). For a model like this, I definitely didn’t go overboard. After that, I hand painted all of the parts in this one. Most models I would use my airbrush, but in this case, I sat down with a brush and went to town. The outside of the ship I sprayed with a spray can (Tamiya AS-20). Research a lot on painting online and on KZbin. There are so many good resources out there.

Hello there. Just found your channel and this build, and I've got to say...Man, what an awesome job!! I do have some questions about your methods, that I'm really struggling at understanding. I see that you(as well as other builders) paint, and get everything prepped prior to assembling all the sub assemblies, and what I can't for the life of me understand is how you do this... How do you go back and fill in gaps, make corrections being that you already painted, scratched windows, etc. How are you "re-painting" now that you already painted?? I just don't get it? How are you correcting seams if you already did your paint work prior? What is your method that you use? Also, how are you gluing the sub-assemblies together if they are painted?? My understanding on model glue is that you need bare plastic, and it is advised to not place glue over a painted surface, so I am confused how you are doing this? I don't believe you touched on this topic specifically. I would greatly appreciate if you would explain this. It would be a huge help for me. Thank you for your time.
@mattsmodelshop

Thanks for the kind words! On the Enterprise D Clear kit, because it's clear you have to paint it first, then scrape the windows. Once all the windows are scraped and you have it the way you want it, you assemble the ship. You'll find light leaks all over the place (Yeah, it sucks). You then fill/sand/etc being careful not to get putty all over your paint, then you can mask/paint the seams. It takes some practice, but you can get it to look pretty good without too much effort. The big thing is to roll the tape (it prevents paint steps) when masking. Once that's all done, if any of the windows got some paint in them, you get the joy of rescraping them again. I scraped the windows on this particular model 3-4 times. Good luck!
@TrekBuilder

Thank you sooo much for the quick response. It is greatly appreciated. Can you also please explain how you assemble the already-painted sub-assemblies? What process do you use to glue them all together if they are already painted? i would greatly appreciate it? :) Oh, sorry, I also forgot to ask, when painting over a second time where you light blocked, or gaps, do you go back and re-prime said areas, or just spray your base color, and that's it? Thanks for your help.

How do you get the decals to sit over the raised details perfectly? And what grit sandpaper do you use?
@mattsmodelshop
@mattsmodelshop Жыл бұрын
I get the decals to sit with copious amounts of MicroSol. Lay the decal down and spread the MicroSol down, and it will *melt* into the model. It sort of conforms to the shape that it's lying on. For sandpaper, I used anywhere from 220-800 grit depending on what I'm doing. Sometimes I'll go higher, it just depends on the application. Before decals, it's usually 800, then pearl white, then clear coat.

He got it wrong about the Tie Fighter. The kit is 32nd scale, whereas the actual studio scale filming model is 24th scale, much larger than the Round2 kit. They are actually calling it part of their studio series referring to the amount of detail they captured from the studio scale filming model. Jamie explained that last year, when they announced the model at Wonderfest.
