Somaliland had been a free selvruling country before it joined in July 1rst 1960 the Italian Somali territories under UN trusteeship. Somaliland refused British colonization and remained a British protectorate until UK left the country in June 26th 1960. Somaliland dissolved the union with today’s Somalia at 18 May 1991 after ten years war with Somalia. Somalis of Somaliland don’t consider Somalia as a free country; we say that Somalians or Somalos are back under trusteeship status, this time under AU & EU. Somalis of Somaliland will stay free for ever and will not risk their freedom again to be part of that mess in Somalia. Let the Somalos/Somalians free themselves without the help of proper Somalis

People from Somalia and Somaliland are fighting in the comments and insulting you like you are expressing an opinion. This is very clearly a video meant to inform, not persuade, about a debate topic. It presents equal amounts of arguments for both sides, and you don't express any radical person opinions. Thank you for this helpful guide, and I am sorry for the unwarranted hate you are getting in the comments. @jettsmith7

Somalkland wanted partnership with Somalia for a greater Somalka which would include Ogaden Djibuti and NFD province in Kenya. The Idea could not mmaterialise and instead like an autoimmume disease Somalia turned a coloniser to Somalia and and started a genovide against Somaliland thanks to SNM a movemenr that drove out the immerged coloniser and set free somalilanders with support of all somaliland citizens in and abroad. For 31 years after that Somaliland took control of its own affairs and continues and shall continue to so. Somalia is aware of that and has no legitimacy to reverse rhe rational and achievements Somaloland has achieve of building again their country from Scratch. More over unlike other states of federal state of Somalia Somalia became a membee of united nations even before somalia.and gained independence from British protectorate earlier than Italia Somalia. Its regeining of its independence was inevitable as there was no other way but to fight for against existantial threat that was forced to it buy the then Somalia. regime. Today nothing is reversible let somaliland and Somalia Co exist as two independent states as they were before a voluntary union which as i previously pointed out its objective was nothing but a greater Somalia which became a failure

Hey Mr. Smith, I am just wondering on what aff arguments to run for icc. From my knowledge, arrest warrants can only be carried out by country compliance, how can the u.s. deter atrocities in other countries if it only has jurisdiction over its own territory?

Hello! This is a good question. I think the argument is that the U.S. joining the court massively increases funding for the court, which increases the resources for investigations into other countries, and because it means the U.S. will be cooperating in investigations with its wide reaching intelligence operations info more often.

The SOMALIA civil war affected many communities.- worse affected areas included Bay region, mudguard and north west SOMALIA. The SNM, somali national movement, later on committed genocide against non isaaq clans in somaliland : the SNM clans now get irritated whenever killing they committed are brought up and resort to threatening people. Civil war occurs in many countries - it cannot be used as a reason for justifying separatist agenda. The Isaaq clan is pushing the break away agenda without other clans in somaliland agreeing to it. Eastern & western regions and clans are not privy to secessionist agenda. Following bloody conflict in SOOL regions, eastern clans are not longer under control of Isaaq based government in Hargaise. How can one justify a recognition for clan undertaking killings of other clans with foreign aid?. Unionist clans will never agree to separatist agenda and would fight to bitter end to defend the union. Outsiders have largely failed to understand clan dynamics within somaliland - and significant population within somaliland opposing the Isaaq clan attempt to impose their recognition seeking agenda on other clans. Their will never be a peace in somaliland should recognition be declared without considering the fundamental rights of non isaaq clans - constituting more than.half of the population. Thus this video clip is based on Isaac clan separatist narratives and does injustice to majority of clans in somaliland not privy to separatist propaganda. Next time you do another video, consider making it more inclusive to present a more balanced views on the reality at the ground. Non of the reasons you advanced for recognition stand up for scrutiny

I am from the north and I will never allow somalia the divided into small controllable ,fiefdoms.the question why would I contain myself to a verysmall nation of not more than 608000 sq km when I can have a big nation of 640,000sqkm.. not only all the ferti le land suitable for agriculture is in the south but also th longest coastline line aswell as minerals( be it oil,gas and other minerals are also in the south.there is nothing in the north except tribalism. I wouldn't advise the northerners to do a mistake that for sure they will regret. How are they going to defend themselves from Ethiopian occupatin.

It is myopic little project among some Isaq clan. My Awdal region and community and SSC are not for it, because it obvious where that going to end up, which is not pretty: a hepless small tribal hell cages with no viable of eocio-economic, developmental diplomatic prospect, at best, and an outright occupation and annexation by the backward expansionist and greedy Ethiopia, at worest. Either way, it is no no-go area or option.

-Given the history that Somaliland and Somalia had different colonizers to begin with should give us the idea that it was two separate countries to begin with. If we go further down in history, there was two different Sultanates in Somaliland and Somalia long before the Europeans came here around 1400-1500, namely The Adal Sultanate in the North and The Ajuran Sultanate in the South. Proof that this is actually an ancient history. -When Somaliland gained independence in 1960, it was recognized by 35 countries including the UK, US, China and so on. Later on the Somaliland people chose to unite with their Somali brothers in the south hoping to build a bright future together. Instead they got in return: Arresting and detaining of Somaliland citizens without charge or trial for peacefully expressing their views. Bombarding the city of Hargeisa by Jets, destroying the city and murdering around 50000 civilians around Somaliland. Lack of freedom of movement, oppression and sexual assaults by the soldiers of Somalia and many more human rights violations. This was done by the Regime of Siyad Barre which ruled Somalia at that time. -Somalilanders had to fight for their families, their rights, their livelihood, their land and dignity against the oppressive dictatorship regime of Somalia in 1991 and declared its independence. A referendum held in Somaliland in 2001 showed that 99% of Somalilanders supported that decision. Since then Somaliland had 6 Presidential elections, 2 Parliament elections, 4 Local council elections and 3 Political party elections. All of the above happened democratically by individual voting without the help of any foreign power. Based on those points mentioned, its not right nor is it democratic to deny the will of the Somaliland people which they have been working on for the past 30 years. And most importantly, no one can tell Somaliland that it has to join the failed state of Somalia and forget the development that we have been working on for so long.

Pro argument 5, 2nd point (link), you stated 'Somalia's illegitimate cries for sovereignty' Illegitimate? Are you biased? why do you think its illegitimate Jett? Also your lecture almost paints a unified Somaliland front, whereby all the citizens want independence, Somaliland is an oppressive system, where those in power openly threaten and imprison any citizens who dare speak of Somali unity.

The idea of Somaliland, Spreading one-sided propaganda ignores the complex realities of the region. The truth is that the majority of the people in Northwest Somalia, including SSC-Khatumo, Makhir, and Awdal, have not collectively expressed support for secession. Instead, it’s a narrative driven by a minority group, such as the SNM, while others strongly oppose it. Educate yourself on the broader historical and social context before advancing such claims.

We have never been United on the issue of being a breaking away from Somalia. Regions like Awdal, Sanag and Lasano are extremely against this idea. Further more no concrete issue to recognize somaliland as ther is no religious, ethnic or ideological difference from the rest, unless there is some strategic interests from some western and middle east or even African nations . On behalf of many people in somaliland as well as many others in the other parts of Somalia I strongly support the unity sovereignty of Somalia.
