I am so glad I found this video. I was considering a Shredder but 125 is kind of highway robbery. Lo and behold I have a vigilante already sitting in my case never used.

Just keep in mind that you will get rust in the steel vigilante barrel over time. If this isn't a concern, it should be fine, I have found rust in my barrel a couple months after filming that video.

I’m gonna use it solely with the salt for insects so I’m not worried. Plus I’d imagine at close range it shouldn’t make much difference whether it’s a Shredder or Vigilante. I’ll find out soon when my ammo arrives. Thank you for the reply 👍

This is the major draw back to this gun is a huge design flaw. They need to make this gun without dependency on buying cartridges…. This is why I won’t buy it!

I'll take a look at that and see if I can figure out a remedy. Any ideas out there? I really only used the vigilante for the video and turned it back to shooting pellets after so I did find some rust but not too bad, I am guessing running all the lead through the barrel may have cleared or maybe coated the bore a little. 🤔

Hey man, nice demo! I'm glad I looked for this before I tried my crazy idea because I think you saved me a step of trial and error. I suspect the barrel is too long allowing the gas to outrun the shot before it leaves the barrel (this is an actual factor in matching real shotgun loads with barrel length). I have an MPX that I was willing to sacrifice so after seeing this I chopped the barrel to match the 9.5" of the shredder as that seems to be the one that performs the best (they make one with a 10 inch barrel but I already have this one so...) My results were fantastic. Equivalent or superior to yours with the shredder at 3' from the muzzle. I will note, however, that you are correct about the possibility of fouling the internals. Salt does indeed seem to very quickly built up inside the top of the magwell, so we'll see how long it runs, but I won't be surprised if some o-rings stop working in there before too long. We'll see 😊😊

Thanks. After reading some comments, make sure to really clear out the bore after shooting salt. I have been reading some readers leaving salt in the bore are having some rust issues. I only used mine for the video then cleaned it pretty thoroughly and have only run lead pellets since with no issue.

Thanks again for another well done video. After watching reload v4, I was thinking about different types of loads too and there your video was! Curious if you ground the corncob yourself, or if you purchased it like that, and if so, which brand/type did you get? Thanks

The corn cob was from reloading store. Bag of brass cleaning media. The untreated corncob is pretty cheap.

Thanks again for a well thought out video. I've been binging your bug gun vids. I'm only about half way through (mainly watched the Shred-er reload ones so far, and this one cuz I didn't know what a Salt-Swat was). So far, here's my thoughts on some of the questions and comments on what to get for those on a budget. As you state, if only one, get a 3.0 (with the Bug-a-beam, as it makes is much more effective). And perfect for around the house or even outside for occasional pest requirements. Once in CO2 territory, I'm thinking to use the Vigilante that I already have and reloading the cartridges with salt. With your tape methods, I can use different size salt (been using a table salt/kosher salt mix in my 3.0) but with the slurry method, I can effectively get a slug for the tough to kill bugs. Also, the Vigilante has a pic rail under the barrel to install a laser sight (I've taken 2 mice with mine) 🙂 Again, thanks for all the research and work. I'll probably learn more with the rest of your vids. Cheers 🙂

Wow, nice job! I had watched some of your earlier Bug-a-Salt videos but just came across this one. Thanks for doing all the research and testing. The Shred-er is expensive in Canada but I already have a Vigilante so will try your salt reloads in it. You may have covered this in another video but I'll pose the question here then go watch the rest but have you found a significant difference in spread between the Shred-er's smooth barrel and the Vigilante's rifled barrel?
@KevinMah-ol5on
@KevinMah-ol5on Ай бұрын
Great video! I have a couple things to add. I've had my 3.0 for a couple years now. Bug-a-beam: totally worth it. Helps if you need to reach or shoot at an angle where you can't really aim with the sights. And if trying to take out something large, you can be sure to be more accurate getting it into the centre of the spread. Came to same conclusion as you. Get the 3.0 if that's the only one you get. The Shredd-er is great if you have larger pests (like wasps) to take out but besides being a big too powerful for indoor use (or against something with a finish you care about), you'll need to use up the CO2 once you load it because it will leak over a few days. Whereas the regular Bug-a-Salt is just pump when you need it. As for window screens, I inadvertently came across another test. Tape a sheet of aluminum foil to the screen then shoot it from different ranges and see how far it punches the foil into the screen. The issue is if you shoot an insect on that screen, you might have a more difficult clean-up job if you punch it too hard and squish it in between the screen wires. Hope that helps someone with a purchase decision. 3.0 with Bug-a-Beam will likely cover 95% of use cases for 90% of urban folks.

I just made this comment on the Sig MCX video, but more appropriate here. Have you heard of using a more powerful PCP pistol like the Benjamin Marauder with Salt Swat? More expensive but seems like it has to be better, with much higher muzzle velocity and with no wasted CO2 cartridges. The only issue I see is the clip that secures the Salt Swat to the barrel won't be compatible. Probably could rig up something. Either tape or a bungee cord immediately come to mind until you can figure out something more aesthetically pleasing.
@michelewilson2583
@michelewilson2583 Ай бұрын
Please try a PCP gun like the Benjamin Marauder. It's 22 caliber so I assume would work with Salt-Swat? But much higher muzzle velocity! And don't have to worry about wasting CO2 cartridges.

Great video. I can say this 100% convinced me. I’ve researched Reddit and many, many others on who should I send my slide to be milled by….and battlewerx came up as the deepest cut possible, with the pegged screw holes…and my last bit of quandary was the tightness of the fit. Hopefully, that’s not just due to the cerakote….as I’m wanting mine done in nitride, which is never as thick as cerakote. And, I’m sending in the eps carry Mrs I bought from the lgs down the street, as battlewerx is currently out of em to sell me along with my optic cut. So, I will send it in with my slide to be mounted by them. And, will make sure to order up a few extra sets of screws!!!

@@arinb12 Oh right, I misunderstood the question. No, I just popped it out to make it easier to reload. You still need the black ratchet in for the vigilante.. The tape method was still a mess by the way, the later versions of reloading are much easier and faster, I left these versions up so that if people were thinking of this on their own they could see how it went.

Generally what I do. I started doing these videos when the shredder was brand new and people were concerned that if they bought one ammo would become unavailable and I had gotten lots of questions regarding ability to reload. Now that it is has been out for awhile I think that isn’t as much a concern.

Some random thoughts and observations: I would love to hear more about exactly what ratio of cornstarch to salt. Wondering about the alcohol suggestion compared to water, and wondering if cornstarch is still necessary as a binding agent. I've seen sugar water suggested as the binding agent, but I do not recommend that simply because having sugar scattered all over your home can attract ants. If using paper, are you putting the glue on the paper now, or are you still rubbing it on the cartridge as in the earlier videos? Couldn't see the target results very well in this video compared to some of the others, would suggest having the target not backlit by the sun at that time of day. I'm assuming you get far more shots out of the shredder versus the Umarex HDR50? Thank you again for making these entertaining and informative videos, and to all the other viewers who have been contributing.

I can't even remember if I did a follow up without cornstarch but I should check. I don't even use cornstarch any more, just salt and water seems to work just fine. I think it breaks up a little better when fired as the cornstarch binds it up a bit more.

Even though I haven't personally tested it, my feeling is that if you remove the divider, yes you will get a more compact harder hitting projectile load, but you will sacrifice spread, which may not be desirable if you are trying to hit an elusive target.

The salt shot is set up for a .22 barrel so the .177 wouldn’t work. I think you could get it to work with other .22. You would just have to come up with a retention mechanism.

🤷‍♂ That is the question. For me it was a Covid, bored out of my mind purchase. I can't say I would buy one now, but maybe. I guess it depends on how much you like CO2 powered fly destruction. Generally, I still use the regular pump bug-a-salts around the house. Easier, cheaper, convenient.

I prefer the water over the paper cutter. More a time thing. The water you can do all your empties at once and pretty quickly, put them aside and they are all ready to go when you need them. Unless I need some right now, then I'll do the paper, but if I need them right now, I tend to break out the factory loads.

Used your technique to load for a Vigilante because I wanted more power than my Bug a salt. Wanted even more power and range for yellowjackets. Bought a Crosman 1077 with extra magazines so now I have a rifle salt gun. The only caveat-the 12 shot mags aren’t flush so drilled some holes in plexiglass, lay a paper towel on top, sit the cartridges over the holes so they sit flush. A little more challenging to load but well worth the effort.

I found some .177 felt plugs that you can either shoot through the barrel or rod through. I put oil on one and run it through then run a couple through dry. Yes, the barrel rusts easily with the salt. Probably the biggest argument in favor of buying a shredder.
