wouldn't it be en-ter-tain-ing, since ing is a suffix so we know how it attaches as a sylable. the base word is entertain? Sorry I'm new to english, I've only been speaking for a few decades

My question is how can you break down a syllable on the syllable structure with the word that starts with a vowel?
@hani91015 жыл бұрын
I beg to differ with you with regard to the syllable division of the word “entertaining”, in fact the possible syllabification is as such : en-ter- tain- ing as the stress falls on the syllable “tain” in light of the stress structure the stressed syllable should contain sounds like : long vowel , diphthong or consonant clusters , and the following syllable be weak. It is better that the n sound remains the coda of the stressed syllable rather being the onset of the following syllable. Please check Daniel Jone’s English Pronouncing dictionary

Hi Dr Nimer Abusalim. I alway confuse when i gotta read a new word(2,3 or more syllables)which i have not ever met. I knew long sound(open syllable), short sound(close syllable). *I know some rules divide word into syllable,but somtimes i make it wrong. I dont know i gotta try to divide syllable first or read it first.(example : RESIDENT Res-i-dent / Re-si-dent *schwa sound. When can i use schwa sound. How can i know and use it in the words. Can you explain and give me more information about sound, spelling word...because i need to sound out well, and understand what native speaker talk to me Thank for your attention

Hello Dr. I have a question. How to count moras for syllable that have 2 or more onsets? If an onset counts as 0 mora, so is it 2 onsets count as 0 mora too? Or is there any way to calculate it? Because I want to know the syllable weight for that. For example: graph. Hope Dr can answer my question. Thank you.

How does this universal syllable structure carry over to Japanese? I understand syllables there could be described as having an onset-nucleus structure, with the occasional "-n" coda; however, the tree structure you present appears to suggests a stronger relation between the nucleus and coda. Is such a hierarchy true for every language?
