I spent hours trying to find something around the house to seal over my pool light and could not find anything. Anything large enough or flexible enough was tried.

If its a concrete pool if the epoxy fails use hydraulic cement. Much easier then having to come back and fix epoxy.

Even the epoxy doesnt last. Its always gonna have to be fixed.

Smoothing around the pipe opening is the key. I had a slow drain out of my spa so I decided to replace the flapper and found that the opening had significant buildup. A little careful sanding did the trick. Great suggestion!

I asked a few pool inspectors in my area: "Who's the best pool builder around here?" By far they all agreed it was "****** Pools"...They said they're competitively priced but go the extra mile in many important places...So I hired them.... One thing they did was use a heavy duty aluminum light housing and they're the only pool builder who still use 3/4" brass conduit all the way to the junction box. Also, all the plumbing ditches were wide and flat on the bottom so that each pipe was installed on virgin dirt and separated... not to touch each other. I'm a professional plumber and can certainly appreciate that. I'm sure there were other quality measures taken I don't even know about....25 years later absolutely no issues.

I think your cone system is a good way to determine if a leak is present in the under ground intake / return lines. My question is if an under ground pipe is leaking how do you determine where it is exactly?

The whole world would be leaking if we lived on spinning ball, hurtling through infinite space. That people still believe this fairytale is remarkable. It is 2023. Space is fake. Water doesn't bend. It doesn't magically stick to the outside of a ball. Water needs a container. A pool guy knows this better than anyone.

We see similar fractures from settling on the bottoms of skimmers, pipe doesn't move but the skimmer does and you see a ring around where the pipe screws in which can leak. On vinyl pools I've actually seen people take the light niche out, install a longer piece of flex pipe, run the cord through then put it back in with a coil of flex behind the light. Fixes the leak but the next guy that has to change the light fixture is doomed! Water bonds inside skimmers are another thing that will become leaks, they use brass and stainless in some of those products and you get a reaction. Very cool video you made.

Having worked on pools for 40 years I can say this is one of the best videos I've seen regarding so many potential leaks that can occur on pool lights. That plate you made for dye testing looks like a great product if it's large enough to fit over a standard inground pool light (ie, hayward, etc). We did something similar and took the thing that came with a leaktrak tester to cover the light, removed the pump and use it in the same way you're doing... never found the leaktrak to be that useful, we usually just dive in the pools and find the holes visually plus since lights are a ground source it's pretty much useless for that. Anyways, thanks for sharing your years of knowledge and a big thumbs up!

I wish you were on Long Island, NY. I just spent $13,000 to repair leaks and it is still losing 3" of water per day. I suspect it is the light or the skimmer. The light stopped working a few days after they "completed" the project.

Greetings. I purchased your kit on ebay a few months ago because I’m having doubts of the repair I had recently in November. My tee on the skimmer was leaking due to age and being copper so I had the skimmer replaced and the plumbing to pvc. All my plumbing is underground so you could imagine how much I payed. Everything seem to be ok I think during winter but now as the heat started happening, I noticed my water line going lower. I told the pool guy that did the work and he came to do a leak test with pressures from the motor to skimmer and said everything looks ok. He said it’s just evaporating. Ok. That’s when I purchased your kit to perform my own test around the lights etc. everything seem good but the main skimmer. I did the test on the main skimmer line and noticed ink getting pulled slowly. I send the video to the tech and he said that totally normal. I’m like how can that be normal if ink is going inn. It’s definitely getting pulled. He said “ my job was done right so I will have to charge $300 again to do another test. I put things on hold and hired another pool detector guy , I told him my situation and perform a leak test all over the pool. He actually jumped inn with a gear test with ink and said so far skimmer, light and returns are good. Mean while he had air pressure on the entire plumbing system and said it been on 16 psi for 20 to 30 min and hasn’t drop. So he claimed everything seems good. Then I told him to explain how the heck ink is getting pulled inn slowly on the main line. He said something about it’s normal for that to happen, air supposedly of backing up etc. I just can’t bug it. Can you please tell me if that is possible ? I have a short video of the my test with your cones giving me results , I truly believe theres a tiny leak left behind from the installers, and your cones is proving it. I would truly appreciate your advice and if you can identify the test video I did.

This simplifies leak detection great product here! I have personally used them and they are very effective in indicating a broken pipe without pressure testing I give it five stars if I could!

I work for one of the biggest leak detection companies out there we have always had something like this but with and innertube dome setup for main dranes. Its a supper effective tool for lights if you make a duction cup dome with a small metal tube 😉. And you get to test your work after repairs.
