Isn't there a LLMC when leaders like Strudel and Klink get sniped? Usually Soviets try a human wave to start.

I watched to the end. I played the original Squad Leader back in the late 70's and early 80's. Got back into it using VSQL in the 2000's but never made it past Cross of Iron even though I've owned Crescendo of Doom And G.I. Anvil of Victory since the 80's. Like you said, there is very little activity with SL so I'm making the jump to ASL and I'm hoping these videos help me.

You need to select the manual focus (MF) option. The autofocus (AF) may be the default setting of your camera. AF continuously adjusts the focus.. i.e. every time your hand gets in the frame, the camera changes the focus range. I hope you have the MF option. Great video otherwise.. Many thanks!

Hi is "Lock 'n Load Tactical Digital" on steam an ASL video game? I was thinking of buying it, it's about 5 bucks for the starter kit and about 9 bucks for each kit, and there is many to choose from.

Idk, this seems very niche. With the resources out there like chapter k and stahler’s classic 8 steps I don’t see the need for another transition series beyond sk. Anyone who has played sk through can go full asl with chapter k and the 8 steps already. Optional rules just seems like it would lead to confusion and balance issues in the scenarios. I’d rather see more advanced SK and more entry level ASL scenarios.

I think I’ve said this in other videos in this series, but I really appreciate the detailed break down of the process. You’ve made learning ASL so much smoother than if I was going through this on my own. Thank you for all the work on this series!

I have recently gotten into ASL. Having almost completed all the start kits, I can say that they have been enjoyable. However, I believe the hurdles of getting straight into full ASL have been exaggerated, based largely on experience of folks who have never taken the time to work through the lessons in Chapter K. I have read and heard many complaints about Chapter K, but I have found every lesson extremely helpful and easy to follow, especially being able to run through the lessons with the electronic rule book side by side with VASL. The hyperlinks to the relevant rules sections allows easy reference to anything that isn’t made clear in Chapter K. Not that I wouldn’t have completed the starter kits, but for those looking to jump right in I would say go for it with Chapter K and these videos. Should be no problem!

This was a really interesting scenario. If I were playing the French, I think I would have moved the mortar to the edge of the wood on the right and smoked the AT gun and run up that side as Scott planned.

I would be curious what you and Scott thought about whether this would have been a better/fairer game using ASL rules. Would rubble, routing/surrender, concealment, CC withdraw, etc. have improved the German chances?

Just finished the series, still upto date and relevant. I had no idea VASL had so many map manipulation options. I just assumed all of the maps were scans ... I was very wrong. Cheers to you and to the VASL/VASSAL devs!

I watched to the end! Very helpful. I fell in love with SL in the early-80s. Someone recently asked what I would do with myself with all the money I could want. I said, “Exercise, read, and play Squad Leader.” I hadn’t thought about SL in decades, but it struck me to pick it up again. So I learned SK1! ASL’s rules have appeared daunting though. Your guidance in this video is just what I needed. Thank you for the clarity on the way ahead.

33:20 The hex printing alignment of this board was off just like the original in SL. You commented on it in the SL Memory Lane video. Along the top you can see a tiny portion of the bottom hex row, and along the bottom the center dots of each hex is missing. You would think that either that was intentional (but why?) or there was someone doubling down on a poor alignment decsion. :) Thanks for showing this off. It's been since the mid-1980's since I last saw mine.

9:10 - ASLSK 4 - Japanese do not have to take PAATC (8.1.8.3). They are indeed bad mamajammas. I enjoy these AARs. You're getting better at narrating the action.

I remember "playing" with gamer friends. Spent most of the time rereading the rules and debating how to apply them. This has convinced me that that is the game. Does the learning curve ever flatten in ASL?

Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is the first wargame I ever (co-)bought (with my cousin, we were around 11-12 years old. It was a revolutionary concept that someone drew maps, and counter, and had rules to play WAR! We'd been using army men and our imaginations up to that point. Soon after, I found SL and bought it thinking that all WWII wargames were compatible. Haha. No concept of scale. I was pretty disappointed that it was a tactical level game. But then we started playing and myself and a cousin loved it. We later recruited a younger cousin to play. We split buying the expansions and loved making our own monster scenarios using almost every piece. When ASL came out, none of us switched. We thought it was a cash grab. We were just kids without jobs or anything at that point. Thanks for he walk down memory lane.

I have a question about the interpretation of the victory conditions :American side wins if there are no good order german units in all the four buildings. Hence if americans keeps just one building out the 4 at the end of the scenario, they will prevent the german to win. So to keep just one building is enough to win... Isn't it this way to interpret the victory conditions of scenario 1 retaking Vierville ?
@ASLAcademy
@ASLAcademy 2 ай бұрын
Yes, but the American's don't even have to occupy/control any of the buildings at the end to win. All they have to do is ensure that at least one of the buildings has no Good Order German units in it. If you look up the definition of "Good Order" you'll see that something as simple as being in Melee prevents a squad from being GO. So the Germans could occupy all 4 buildings, but if the Americans have even one unit locked in melee in one of the buildings at the end, the Germans lose. Further more, the Germans have to be occupying every building hex at the end. They can't occupy/control it then leave, even if it's never re-captured by Americans. Every building hex has to be occupied by a GO German unit.
