Thank you for this question. For this, you would need to design at least one alternative glyph for "M" and "A" each, and then write a contextual alternate feature ("calt") that will substitute the alternative glyphs for the defaults

I have a question, is there a way to make instances for all the different masters? for example, weight has two masters and multiple instances, then another one with width and its instances. In this case, would there have to be 2 width masters for each weight?

Thank you for this question. For this design space, you would only need to have 2 width masters and 2 weight masters total. As you have 2 weight masters, the width masters will be interpolated with the weight masters as they are all compatible with one another.

Hello! It is possible to import vector drawings into Glyphs App from illustrator which could cleaned up and used to prepare a font, but it might be easier to draw directly inside glyphs if possible. Procreate is totally possible to sketch, but you would have to vectorize the drawing first

hi Kevin, I have a question about type design terminology that I want to ask you since my native language is not English or European languages. I recently learned about the difference between "font" and "typeface" But I would like to know under what circumstances would the word "type" be used instead? e.g. "I enjoy designing logos and types." Can the "types" here be changed to "typefaces"?
@kevinking74
@kevinking74 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for your question. in short, yes, it would be correct to say "typefaces" here, in any context where you are referring to the design of typefaces. However, I think it is also equally appropriate to use "font" here as well. In a contemporary sense, both "typeface" and "font" are appropriate when describing the act of making them. I use either term depending on who I am talking to. If speaking to designers or people who know more about typography, I use "typeface", in more general situations, "fonts".

Hello Kevin your videos are great and so well explained! Thanks so much for sharing such a valuable knowledge! I have never design a font. I can see now how important is the structure or skeleton of a font to create the masters and different width variations, but I don't really understand if when you start with the sketch and idea of the font style that you want to create you should start from the skeleton or not. Meaning by that what comes first the design/glyph or the skeleton of the font?
@kevinking74
@kevinking74 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Laura, I'm glad you find the videos helpful, and thank you for your question. I think it is a matter of what you feel comfortable with, in regards to where you start first. Hypothetically, any given font design has a set of patterns that are shared across any of the styles in the font. I personally begin with the *regular* text weight, and then get the other styles from this source. Even if I will only have a 2 master setup, I still begin with the regular to establish the atmosphere of the design

Thank you so much for your kind words about this font - I'm glad you're like it! @@tinermw This sounds right, you can indeed open up any font in Glyphs App on any OS, but this is not a legal or ethical practice to make fonts unless the license for the font allows for modification and redistribution. This is only possible with open source fonts, but is rare. If you open an existing font file and manipulate the data (outlines, spacing, kerning) and use or sell that font, you are infringing on the copyright of that font, because you are using someone else's data to begin the font. Please begin designing fonts from scratch - my videos breakdown how to build letters from scratch. Then - once you have built your own data - you can always use it to build other fonts in the future.

Hello, glad you find the videos helpful. If you are building the second master, you do likely have to draw each letter manually, however, if you have two masters already (regular + bold, or, narrow + wide, for example) you can generate an instance in between these masters and then copy it into your current source file as a master.

My Contextual Alternates work only after I press the features button. But after saving and using the font in illustrator or any other programs, the alternates don't work. How is that solved?
@kevinking74
@kevinking74 3 жыл бұрын
Ah, this is the expected behaviour in Glyphs App regarding testing your contextual alternates (calt) in the app itself. One problem with OpenType is that it is not universally supported by all programs, and even programs that support OpenType do not support all of the features with the OT spec. So it is possible that some apps will support contextual alternates while others will not. Here is a handy reference from Typotheque regarding features supported by app, with versions: www.typotheque.com/fonts/opentype_feature_support Illustrator does support calt, so there is one thing to try: make sure that when you are exporting your font, that you choose to export it as an OpenType font, with the .otf extensions. Give this a try and it should work in Illustrator and InDesign.

Hi Kevin-really love these. Quick question about the 1000 unit boundary-looking at your ascender height, won't your diacritcs come out over the upper bound? I.e. be larger than 1000 units? And is this OK?
@kevinking74
@kevinking74 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ulrik, great question. In regards to the diacritics landing near the ascender height, yes, some diacritics for the capital letters will land outside the top boundary, and this is usually ok. Technically, we can have any PostScript outline falling outside the glyph boundary, but we have to think about how that decision would effect other glyphs in text. in almost any typesetting situation, there will be leading placed between the glyphs which buffer them, and there would not be a situation of clashing diacritics and letters between lines. One thing you can do is design your metric grid so that there is more space at the ascender area, and have the decenders touch the bottom of the 1000u grid. This way you leave more space for the top-lying diacritics, of which there are more of in the Latin script.

@@kevinking74 Just another idea: how bad (or at least different) of a font would Impact Ultra Light be?
@kevinking74
@kevinking74 4 жыл бұрын
@@casperdewith Well, I think that Impact Ultra Light would certainly by quite different in regards to weight from Impact, as it would be similar to other condensed Grotesque type families and their system of weights. I think that the huge contrast in style between Gill Sans regular and Ultra Bold is stark, partially because of the design construction (humanist sans model). When the humanist forms in Gill Sans get extrapolated to the ultra, a lot of adjustment is required to retain the curves and counter shape construction. Condensed Grotesques like Impact allow for a more systematic distribution of weight as a result of general stroke and counter shape patterns being more regular. Actually, it's a nice idea to have type families that are not so systematic, and that change across the weights, as long as they retain a sense of the total system.

@kevinking74
@kevinking74 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words Chris, and I am so glad that you find the tutorials helpful. In type design, there can be many ways to reach a similar end result in regards to drawing letters, fitting, and kerning. My technique for /y/ above - and for drawing all letters - comes from my own practice of calligraphy, and thinking about letters as being built up structurally from strokes, which can also be thought of as patterns. These patterns then spread themselves across evenly to all of the letters and glyphs, to make a cohesive whole. Gerard Unger had the great analogy of thinking about type design as cooking: "When you cook, you can't throw the ingredients in one corner of the pot, and the spices in the other, and just let them cook; you have to stir them around and mix them. Type design is taking a set of letterform ingredients and spreading them around until you get a harmonious whole." Ultimately, I think it is best for each individual designer to be exposed to a variety of methods, and then to adapt what works best for them into their own approach. Happy fonting!

Dutch is a language very regularly using an ij combination. It's the only language the ij-ligature is used in: ij, IJ.
