I'm 71, have been riding my mountain bike for 2 years. Completed 2980 miles in 2023. 2024 completed 4400 miles, which included my first coast to coast followed by a 100 miler in a day. Increasing my training mileage from 105 miles per week to upwards of 120, sometimes 170 and hope to do more coast to coasts in the UK this year. But for the Grace of God i hope i continue with good health and wont need to take any meds.

I never ever want to join group rides. Its always a pissing contest on who has the best legs, or the most expensive bike. And most group just keeps talking nonsense you cant even enjoy the nature the peace around you. Cyclist who bike to chat are not cyclist these are attention seekers. My bike and be with nature is all I need. All that meaningless nonsense small talks during rides is shyte. Riding is for pleasure no rubbing each others balls.

Like the video: There is a climb here in one of our Metro Detroit northern suburbs. A lot of roadies in Farmington Hills, MI ride this stretch. But coming back on the descent can be reckless with company. You know, bobbing and weaving. Passing on the right...blah..blah..blah. I prefer solo for safety consciousness.

Few of the wax-cultists go on about the equipment and supplies needed, but almost never about the time spent making your $50 chain last twice as long. Based on the frequency of post-ride cleaning they do mention, let alone the time spent removing and replacing the chains (and how long do your quick-links last?) that $25 savings seems to require a LOT of time that could be spent doing something more fun...like riding? What's your time worth? Minimum wage in CA for 2025 is $16.50. How many hours do you spend "saving" that $25?

Great synopsis! I've been using it for a year and will never go wax to oil based lubricant. One caveat, I live in New York and store my bike in my garage during winter. Last year, in the spring, I noticed by waxed chain had surface rust. This year, I took my chain off, cleaned it, hot waxed it and stored it in the house. Most of my riding friends have been convinced to go to waxing because of my experience. Silca has made it easy.

Luvly ride! I also ride alone, but I do two group rides per year, both charity events, 25-35 miles each. I think of those as social events more than riding.

Solo can be good, as can riding with groups small and large… variety is the spice of life! Do some of each as fits your schedule and comfort level. The Elks BBQ is tri-tip sandwiches. Good stuff, but there are a lot more places serving them now than when they started many years ago. You could easily eat one and continue on the ride, especially if you were 3 hours in and had 2 hours to go…. The spots you are riding are some of the best road rides anywhere in the US. For those who are too scared to to ride because of cars, it is definitely worse than years ago, but Ventura County (where this was filmed) is very safe relative to many other places. If you ride at the right times (eg weekend mornings) you are much safer overall than when you drive. 🙏

In my heyday as a young cyclist, I was in road and criterium races. My early bikes were steel and Campagnolo friction groups. Now years later, retired, and a senior cyclist on advanced aluminum and carbon fiber bikes, I don't ride for the glory, but for the still solitude and serenity of life.
@CyclingDave22 сағат бұрын
Excellent, Jerry what part of the country did you ride? I raced in Tri-Borough area of Norther New Jersey.. Steel Colnago with Record Campy.. loved it. I felt invincible on the hills. In fact, I still hold the Hill Climbing Championship from 1974. I beat a whole minute off the best time. Wow. Now living in Cuenca Ecuador at 8,300ft. I can't catch my breath going up these mountains... Maybe some day, but hey, that doesn't stop me from having fun.

@@CyclingDave My cycling involved amateur category races and a few criteriums. I have raced up Mount Diablo, I could have gotten to the top ahead of others but there were so many cyclists that it was hard to pass. Lots of benefit rides and centuries. My favorite bikes that I rode and owned were Italian made bikes like Colnago, Tomasini, Pinarello, Bottechia, Guerciotti, and especially Bianchi. I loved all Campy stuff both Super Record and C Record. I also liked Shimano Dura Ace. At 67 I am getting a knee replacement so I am looking forward to riding again after I heal.

Enjoy the ride until some idiot makes you road kill - or worse. Not a bad way to go to exit this world doing something you love to do, but you run the risk of surviving with serious life-changing injuries. I rode for 30 years plus all around So Cal and survived. Some drunk driver side swiped me in 2016. The situation on the road is so much worse now, I could never imagine riding like I did before. After 35 years of cycling almost daily, in 2017 I came home after my ride and ended up putting the bike away and haven't touched it since. It was very weird. It was not even something I planned. But reality just hit me that day that cycling in So Cal was way too dangerous to my health or survival. Now I am a runner, and even that is a dangerous activity given all the crap we deal with in LA.

Because rim brakes work great and aren't butt ugly like the disk brakes? I feel sorry for all of the people riding these ugly, overpriced new bikes.
@james-pКүн бұрын
They're perfectly good. Disc brakes are really only necessary for offroad/mud and heavy e-bikes. They weigh more than rim brakes and harder to maintain, too. I much prefer rim brakes on a road bike.
