Are these near as good as the malazan series ?
@fairwaybrothers32352 ай бұрын
I mean thats kinda subjective no? I would say they are much much better than Malazan but that’s because i much prefer a tighter more focused story about specific characters rather than a grand tale with 10,000 years of history and magic.

My suggestion for another litRPG series that non litRPG fans might enjoy is _Eight_ by Samer Rabadi. It is a very character focused story where a mature, talented human male from our world gets killed and is reincarnated as an 8-year old boy in a fantasy world, but in the first book he must pretty much survive outside of civilization. If you are subscribed to Kindle Unlimited, you can read the first three books at no extra cost, and the fourth book is being released multiple chapters a week on the free-reading site Royal Road.

I certainly can - I've been doing what I've been calling "Book Discussion" videos that are less rating focused and more talking about the plot and stuff, though I've mainly been doing that for the Malazan series so far. Since there's some interest for Dungeon Crawler Carl I can find some time this week to organize my thoughts about more specific plot points and talk about it! (For this book I'm especially interested in talking more about the beginning conversation with the lawyer and the crazy ending)

Based on the problems you had with this book, I think the second one might be more enjoyable for you. A lot of traitor’s cast is disposable but the sequel introduces all the major players that are followed for the rest of the series and also has multiple perspectives outside of baru. The tone is also REALLY different in the later books- it gets quite (darkly) humorous. In terms of pacing, the second and third book were originally one so the second book is like almost all build up for the third but I think it’s still really compelling. It really focuses on the ramifications of traitor’s ending but honestly it is still a lot of political maneuvering.

Finally got to finish this video. Now you have touched on almost everything important, and this was a really good discussion video. Enjoyed it. One clarification for you. Rake sacrificed Moon's Spawn because it was already in really bad shape and on its last legs. It was damaged badly in the Battle of Pale, and could not be repaired properly to make it long term habitable. So they decided to sacrifice it anyway and also get battle effectiveness out of it.

I appreciate this insight - I'm always worried when a series has been unfinished for so long that I'll wind up disappointed, but if books 2&3 feel complete like this first book did, I'm a little less worried and more likely to keep reading

Learning what you’re reading now, what a reward for watching the whole video 😂 but good to know you’ll get to House of Chains soon Like you, I’ve heard a lotta hype about this book/series so I was particularly interested to hear your take. Surprised at the small issues it has (lack of character fleshing out, interlude weirdness) but they do sound super minor and won’t deter me from keeping this high on my TBR. Interesting thoughts on why you might not continue… I’m kinda OCD or completionist maybe about reading whole series (what’s published so far anyway) so as long as I like book 1 I’m sure I’ll quickly run through 2 and 3. But your logic makes sense! Thanks for the review, appreciate your perspective 😁
@fantasybookclub Жыл бұрын
Until very recently (like, a few months ago) I was also very much a completionist and couldn't move on to a new series until I finished what was published, but since my TBR list has grown so long I'm trying to force myself to be more selective lol. That being said, despite the (minor) flaws I read this book in 4 days, so it's worth it!

Ugh where did my comment go... I promise I commented after finishing the video :( Don't remember most of it now lol. But I did really love the video, your understanding of things is spot on. I'm glad you appreciate the depths and details of Malazan so much -- this series is for you!! The one thing I remember saying was about pronunciation -- not only is your pronunciation really good most of the time, Steve Erikson has said many times he doesn't care how you say things. As long as we know what you mean it's fine. That said, you get a lot of things right (according to the way Steve says it anyway) that most people don't -- like Tiste. So have some faith :)

Wowowow great video!! And so glad you loved this book so much Your explanation of the 3 levels of secrets and revelations was awesome. Really great way to look at it, makes perfect sense!! Bridgeburners are First In Last Out lol, you obviously got the message but you said it backwards, was pretty funny tbh And I really liked your structure with the prologue and relating that to the rest of the book. You won't be able to do that with every book after this (some of them though... some of them yes) but for this one in particular that was a great choice. And that's part of Erikson's genius, close reading like this is absolutely rewarded!! Looking forward to part 2!! 😄😄😄
@fantasybookclub Жыл бұрын
Unsurprising that I said "First in, last out" backwards - I just looked at my notes and I wrote it down backwards, oops. "Last in first out" is what I'd do if I had to go into battle so maybe it was just a freudian slip haha

You will learn why Whiskeyjack didn't heal his leg way later. Really wish you would have talked about Itkovian and his sacrifice. His role as the shield anvil, and that iconic scene with the T'lan Imass. About how we see the theme of compassion so vividly in this book. Also the Seige of Capustan, being such a vivid battle. Rake and Whiskeyjack's friendship, Whiskeyjack's understanding of Rake's compassion while executing the prisoners. So much to talk about. As if it can make a part 2 video by itself.

I might have to make a part 2, there's so many things I didn't get a chance to touch on at all. Grumble's arc was very cool, Itkovian's sacrifice and new world created for Mhybe, both battles were very cinematic as well. Welcome, Mortal Sword of Togg and Fendaray! The religious aspect was extremely important here. The Shield Anvil’s arc maybe seems a bit small or slowly expanding but that team captures the war itself and when someone fights for faith. And Malazan is about compassion. His arc was one of that. Besides Pannion. And yes, the next older race. Not that many of them.

Great to see that you loved it. Memories of Ice is usually people's favorite because this book is the closest to traditional fantasy structure and storytelling and pretty straight forward with clear good and bad guys. Every other book will subvert your expectations in different ways. You talked about structure, well you are in for a surprise. While the format of each book being broken into 4 subbooks will always continue, the other things that you expect about structure will always be subverted, and each book plays with structure in a different way. You may end up liking all of them for different reasons and some more than others. House of Chains is a divisive book and usually towards the bottom of people's favorites, but many people love it, its different. So no pressure, just go in and enjoy. Can't wait for your spoiler review.

Glad you liked it so much!! Common opinion, it is just an amazing book, and possibly the most self-contained "traditional" fantasy book of the whole series. I'll have more to say about specifics in your spoiler-filled video (can't wait for that!!) but here's some stray thoughts: -- correction, GotM is 7 books, but they start following the pattern of 4 books from Deadhouse Gates on, and you're right that structure lends itself well to naturally strong pacing and it just makes sense. Erikson is brilliant in many ways, including "minor" ways like structure -- MoI has probably the best prologue of the series. Even people who don't rate it their favorite will admit how bad ass it is -- on the subject of if it's all downhill from here -- no. Even if this ends up being your favorite, I promise it won't feel all downhill from here. There are plenty of people who LOVE the whole series who cite MoI as their favorite. It's usually the top ranked in polls, in fact. However, I assure you those people didn't hate the rest of the series lol. The thing is, each book is amazing in its own way. Erikson somehow finds something unique (or multiple unique things) to do with each one. Picking a favorite is really hard and for most people, changes depending on the day (not for me, the combined 9/10 I call The Crippled Dream is always my fave 😎). Anyway enough rambling, but I agree with Daniel's comment here that you should try not to have specific expectations for HoC -- it is different. And even though it ranks low in the whole series for me, it's still a fantastic book, it's just that the others are that much better for me. And some people rank HoC first -- it's not at all unheard of. It's amazing at what it does -- just go in trusting Erikson, and with as little expectation as possible. Meet it where it is. I think you'll love it!!
@danielgwynne7266 Жыл бұрын
I would also withhold expectations for house of chains since it will break a lot of them.
