I haven't finished the book yet, but I agree with you about the abrupt shift around the 300 page mark. The time shift happens, and all of that investment in the characters is for naught, and you have to start all over. And it's hard to care about the world after the virus when the only development we get of it in between the two parts is basically emails and memos. I feel like there could've (and should've) been a whole other book covering the time period between the first part and the second part.

Seems like 2023 will come to an end before we'll get The Winds of Winter. Even after a decade since reading ADWD, still curious to see the follow-up involving Wyman Manderly, Davos Seaworth, ̶R̶e̶e̶k̶ Theon Greyjoy & Winterfell (along with an dizzying amount of other POV & 'side' characters). I'm even fairly certain that I've seen your review a mighty long time ago too. How time flies... Cheers from the Netherlands!

!! FYI my English is not the best and not my first language!! Right now I am learning about The Holocaust and I am reading this book with my 8th grade class. We are on chapter 12 and I've decided watch the movie early because I was interested and intrigued by the movie cover. I watched it and when the clip of Bruno and Shmuel being in the underground place taking off the uniform and it just clicked. A few weeks before we started to read the book, my teacher was talking about how the soldiers tricked the Jews that they were going to take a shower when they were actually gonna be killed. I immediately knew what was happening and started to tear up, i then stayed silent with my hands over my mouth and crying while the rest of the movie played out. I was in tears and sobbing about this movie. And now I have to live the fact that when I'm reading the book tomorrow in class, I'm gonna be in tears whenever we get close to the end :')

I have just read "The girl with the dragon tattoo". It is a good book, better than the sequel "The girl who played with fire". Was the character of Lisbeth Salander supposed to be the main character? She seems to be a complete accident. I believe that Mikael Blomkvist was supposed to be the main character and Salander just a minor, supporting character. Blomkvist is an alter ego of the author Stieg Larsson. Many characteristics of Blomkvist are based on the author himself. But then Larsson created the character of Salander, which is far more interesting than any other character he created. To a point that all sequels are now about her and not Blomkvist. Even the original title of the book in Swedish "Män som hatar kvinnor" seems to translate to "Men who hate women". Which means the book was never supposed to be about Salander. But because she is much more interesting, the titles of all books in English are now related to her. Was Larsson already expecting to write the sequels from the very beginning? The first book seems to be almost entirely self-contained. There are 3 distinct storylines in the book: Harriet Vanger, Lisbeth Salander, and Hans-Erik Wenneström. Both Vanger and Wenneström storylines are completed in the first book. But Salander storyline is expanded in the sequels. Larsson makes a brief mention of "all the evil" which he never explains in this book, planting the seeds for a sequel. The second book ends in a cliffhanger, so the third book was almost inevitable. Why did Larsson create Lisbeth Salander? I think he wanted a computer hacker, someone who could get crucial information to help the main hero of the story. That computer hacker should not only be a genius, but also be almost criminal, getting into other people's computers illegally and secretly. That is how you get an antisocial, lonely, weird, extremely intelligent, agressive, hostile, unemotional fragile little girl covered in tattoos and body piercings. Why do writers insist on adding so much useless information? Not just Larsson, but I have noticed many writers insist on describing everything in excruciating detail, information that is usually useless or completely irrelevant to the story. Do we need to know exactly what each character ate for breakfast? The writer will describe in detail each room the character enters into, exactly what each character eats for breakfast, lunch and dinner, exactly what each character wears, or doesn't wear... All this stuff just to fill pages... I suspect that many writers sign contracts with publishers, and those contracts stipulate the number of pages the book must have. So when the writer doesn't know what to write, he will simply fill pages and pages with irrelevant boilerplate, just to satisfy the quota of pages stipulated in the contracts... How to solve the problem of sexual violence against women? Even though it is the main theme of the book, the issue of violence against women is never fully addressed. The author does not propose any solutions. The question is even more serious when the crime is perpetrated by the very people who are supposed to protect the victim, like parents, family members, legal guardians. And when the victim is a minor, it makes things even more tragic. One possible solution is to have several legal guardians. The biological parents are the primary legal guardians. But we could have several other people, not necessarily family members, who could act as secondary legal guardians or adoptive parents. All the guardians have the obligation of ensuring the physical, mental and financial well-being of the child. The secondary guardians would have the right to keep the child for a few days every month, and the obligation to give a small financial contribution to the primary guardians. If the primary guardians for some reason are not able to raise the child, the child is then automatically transferred to the secondary guardians. The secondary guardians become primary guardians, while the previous primary guardians either cease to be guardians or become secondary guardians. If any of the guardians commit any kind of abuse against the child, hopefully the other guardians will be able to notice it and inform the police.

It’s a great book, but it drags on and on and doesnt stay on course.... Cronin will spend literally 10 pages detailing an environment or object and then spend another 10 pages talking about what things in the environment remind character X about for no purpose at all.... Meaningless crap.... The book must have cost a fortune to print.... To sum it up, The Passage is 300 pages of actual storyline and 467 pages of fillers. Still a 4 out of 5 rating, but good friggin luck getting through it if you suffer from ADD....

Overall the book is good but it is not one that will linger in your mind. I think it is a little weird the way the author expresses dates and times. He uses dot instead of colon, and roman numerals to express month. For example December 17th is written as "17.xii"and 10:30 is written as "10.30". Is that a Swedish thing? Many places in Sweden seem to end in "gatan". For example, Lundagatan, Bellmansgatan, Heleneborgsgatan, etc. "Gatan" in Swedish probably means district or something like that. Many names in Sweden end in "sson". For example Svensson, Larsson, Johansson... This also must be a Swedish thing... It probably means "the son of", the same meaning as the Scottish "Mac". The only interesting and well-defined character is Lisbeth Salander. She is a super-heroine with super-powers. She is a genius at computer hacking, chess and mathematics. She has a photographic memory. But she also has several flaws. She has a tragic past, she is a loner, anti-social, awkward, small, fragile little girl that is underestimated, humiliated and made fun of all the time. The flaws are what makes a character likeable. A character with no flaws or problems or unresolved issues is not likeable. The unresolved issues are what makes the audience to root for the character, to wish for the issues to be resolved, to have a happy ending, to have closure. We like Batman exactly because his parents were killed tragically when he was still a little boy. Batman keeps fighting crime because deep down he is trying to save his own parents, an impossible and never-ending task. We like Superman because... well, I don't know... Superman may be dumb compared to Batman, but that is not really a flaw.... Superman fights crime simply because of the strong moral code that his adoptive human Kansas farmer parents gave him. His love for his human adoptive parents is what guides Superman's actions. Maybe the lack of a strong motivation is what makes Superman less likable than Batman. But Lisbeth Salander is the only interesting character in the book. The second main character, Mikael Blomkvist, seems to be a complete douchebag. He has no flaws. He is good-looking, rich, healthy, a respected journalist, has a good job, good family, good friends. He is popular with women, has sex with several women, even young nymphets are falling all over him. The guy is the worst! Why should I like him? Why should I feel sorry for him? Why should I wish him a happy ending? The guy already has everything one could wish for. The same can be said about all the other characters besides Lisbeth Salander. I couldn't care less about any of those characters. The book is also unnecessarily long and slow. Many parts of the book just keep repeating information that the reader already knows, without advancing the plot. Not much happens for most of the book. The end of the book is good, though. There are two explosive revelations that explains many mysteries established previously. I was really not expecting that.

I disagree with your opinion. I am reading the book without stop, it drags me so much in. Some corrections: Mikael is not rich, just average middleclass person, he has no family / he is divorced and almost never sees his family. The confusing dates? Blame the translator, not the author.
