Comedian and Historian Tony Robinson explores one of the darkest moments in Australia's policitic history, the White Australia Policy. It was one of the first laws passed after Federation in an effort to keep Australia "British", limiting non-white immigration. It led to unlawful discrimination and labour shortages, and lasted for over 60 years.

In 1963 I served as US Vice-consul in Perth. I established a relationships with the Executive Secretary of the Australian Labor Party, based in Perth, and some ALP members of the Western Australian parliament. That year the meeting of the national ALP Executive was held in Perth. I was told that no one aside from the "36 faceless men" who ccmprised the Executive could attend, not parliamentarians, certainly not the press. Imagine the Consul's and my surprise when I, and by extension, the Consul were invited to sit in on the proceedings. One of the topics discussed was a proposal to drop the White Australia policy from the party's platform. It was not adopted but was referred to a committee for further study. That indicates to me that as recently as 1963 the ALP, at least, still favored the policy, but was beginning to waver.

We emigrated there in 1956 Actually there was racist elements against british And other.europeans from Aussies altho not too bad I survived 23 years there Thanks to Gods powerful Hand watching over me!
