Very cool race! I'm an ex Pro Sailor on big boats, hanglider pilot, sailplane pilot, waiting to get into paraglind, but right now hot for kites! I think any comparison like this is always an eye opener. I look forward to seeing many different types of sailcraft having these type of races. My current wish list would be a moth foil, a great kite and board, a paraglider powered and 40 acres overlooking the ocean! I'm 54, and I STILL love risky, gooofy, exciting FUN! Santa, i'm waiting......

Great video to promote sailing (in all various forms) in Biscayne Bay (Miami, FL)... Thanks for promoting sailing/windsurfing/kiting/yachting. Wish there were much more ways to reach the masses that consider sailing "boring, elitist and old fashioned". Sailing is an exciting, challenging and 100% eco-friendly global sport. Congratulations amigos!

Great conditions for the moth, pretty interesting results with the kite. We are always faster than an RSX around a course and by quite a lot most of the time. The kites are only just a bit faster than an RSX in some conditions. Would be interesting in 18 knots, anyway sweet vid

This was an awesome video. The Moths are very interesting and I'd love to try one someday but I'll be taking up Kite-boarding this year. Can't beat the convenience of kiting as you can drive to a suitable beach when the wind blows and be on the water in under 10 minutes. Very convenient. The cost is but a fraction of the other boats and after seeing what can be done with a kite at the next Olympics it will kick the already fastest growing water/wind sport into overdrive. As a Hobie16 sailer I have seen kites zipping by now and then and they just look like incredible fun and are certainly fast.

I think he kite has an unfair advantage as the wind blows faster 60 feet above sea. Cool video but try in 15 knots of wind so everyone has full potential to go fast!!

Im lucky enough to have all three... Moth takes president regardless of the weather, so so so much fun to sail. Would be good to run this again in a heavy breeze with some short chop thrown in... Although, the only thing that sticks out is everyone would be over power apart from the kite as they would change down... Would be carnage! ;)

There has been many races between windsurfers and kite boarders. The wind surfers can't keep up. The Columbia gorge race, previously dominated by windsurfers, was won five years running by a guy on water skis using a kite.

nicely done video, seeing a kite actually point well to windward is pretty impressive. Just as a note, the International Moth is a development box rule class and they are restricted to maximum sail area of a mere 8ish square meters (?) i think. By rating alone an international Moth is about even with an A-Cat and barely behind 18' cats. A formula windsurfer might well have been a different story on this course, next video, Moth - formula windsurfer - IKA rules kiteboard - RSX? please?

What happened to the other kiters? I guess it is really close between the kite & Moth. Brad is a top racer (I raced Lasers against him) so I am not surprised that he won when the kiters made mistakes. I met Garry this past weekend and he seemed to have his course board going really well. My guess is that it takes a top racer to have the edge.

how is the sail/kite area and statistical surface area of the moth and kitesurfer? is there an explanation here as to what makes the kite faster?
@nickopedia56695 жыл бұрын
The kite has more surface area than the moth(you can see it in the side shot at 7:13 ), and a lot less weight with no mast, a 20-30 lb (10-15 kg) board instead of a boathull, etc. It does have more wetted area and more wavemaking energy losses, but it also has access to faster wind up high (wind at the surface is slowed down by having to interact with the uneven wavey surface)

Now try it when there is only a couple knots of wind and see who wins.....and can the kite sailor re-start himself if the kite dumps into the water? Cool video, although every now and then I darn near got seasick!
@LucaManunta9 жыл бұрын
tod mills The wings of kites can go from very large to very small to cover all wind conditions. Once the wing took off, it reaches 20-30 mts of height, where you always find stronger and more stable wind speeds (=less friction with land or water surface). Moreover manoeuvring a kite (in figures of 8 or sin waves) creates apparent wind. Kites are self-producing-wind machines. The difference would increase in lower wind. On the contrary, I believe the skiff was at disadvantage due to weak wind conditions. With stronger wind and big waves, both moth and kites would start suffering and the race would be closer.
@12comrades12 жыл бұрын

Forgone conclusion. Kite has about the same sail area, a tiny fraction of weight and wetted surface, plus an effective “mast height” of 60 feet! Of course it has potential to be faster. Then again, the issue is pointless because they are intended to be raced against equal opponents, so regardless of which you sail, it’s going to be a blast!
@JustInvertedFpv14 жыл бұрын
So who's gonna take the rig off the moth and hop on with a kite. Might have to have 2 on board so 1 can steer. You should give it a shot! Video it, the wipeouts would be great.
@kwittnebel12 жыл бұрын
Put the board on an 8sqm kite and see who comes out on top. Damo looks to be using 13sqm or more here - 1.5 to 2x what the Moth has up for a sail. It is pretty remarkable that the Moth is even in the ballpark given the difference. Moth is tremendously more efficient.
