For the adults there's not much, just making sure they have a wind break and covered area. For the babies they need a lot of special care initially and are very delicate.

Do your ostrich lay during the rain? My girl stops laying once it rains and takes a week or two after the rain stops before she lays again.

If we have a lot of rain she will take a break but this was just a quick shower. She laid another 3 days later

The humidity here is too high, so they don't have any success hatching on their own. The eggs end up exploding or if they do develop the chicks are very unhealthy

Ostrich eggs won't hatch if they get wet and require very low humidity for chicks to hatch without medical issues. Our environment is busy too wet for them to be successful on their own.

At what age can they tolerate the frosty temperatures?
@thiscrazybird88Ай бұрын
I keep mine with a heat lamp at night until they are about 4 months old. If it's below freezing or we're expecting nasty weather I also make sure to bring them into the barn
@jibranbhat8711Ай бұрын
@@thiscrazybird88 Okay. We have about 60/70 days of frost here and want to get some. I'm hoping to get some soon, so they're already full sized before frost.
@thiscrazybird88Ай бұрын
I brought mine home in March when they were about 8 months old and they did great without a heat lamp. Just make sure they have a dry area to bed down in, a good wind break, and access to warm ish water during the colder months. I know people who keep them in Canada with no issues

Im unfamiliar with ostrich, do they seem to just tolerate you or do you think there is some sort of bond there? Assuming youve had these creatures a while of course. I love animals and have been around different kinds of birds. Chickens guineas turkeys parrots finches and the like. They are all different but can all bond with a person. Same with snakes and mammals and maybe even insects and arachnids! I had a scorpion who id like to say loved me, i could pet him hold him pretty much whenever. Never stung me. Ive gotten close to a wasp nest over the period of three days and got to the point where i went from talking to them to holding them from their nest and petting them without being stung at all. I figure its the same with these guys but like i said ive never had the pleasure of working or living with them.
@thiscrazybird882 ай бұрын
I like to think there is a bond there, and you can see a difference in behavior when someone new is in the barn or near their fields. I've had them for 3 years and they came to me at about 9 months old so it's been a learning experience for sure. I do want to raise another set from hatch and see if they behave differently with a more hands on approach to them from a young age though. That said, they are essentially wild and have all the instincts and reactions ingrained in them to survive life with large predators so they can do some damage in a heart beat and should be treated with respect.
@brittanyo5182Ай бұрын
Every single snake/reptile specialist on YT say snakes can NOT bond with humans. Become comfortable yes, bond, no.

@@thiscrazybird88 unfortunately everything that I have found about caring for young ostriches.
