Referring to your mistake #5 how do you work scale and balance on garage forward homes (snout house). These homes have the front door hiding behind a giant garage that takes up the full front of the house. Do you just draw a line from the center of the garage if you have this type of home? How do you balance the front of the house in these type of homes (southern suburban hellscapes)? This might be why no one landscapes these types of homes😂 😂
@PrettyPurpleDoor
@PrettyPurpleDoor 3 күн бұрын
I would imagine that your garage is on the left or right side of your house, not in the dead center. So find the center point of your house and balance from there. If there's a garage on the left side and you can't put plants in front of it, then you'll have to add more volume next to the garage to balance out the right side.

Got it this makes sense. Draw the lines from the center of the house and then balance from there. Your videos are extremely helpful and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

Great video! Going along with your #1 tip of addressing drainage issues - also look at anything else going on near your garden that might need maintenance now or later, or cause a safety concern. Things like utility wires, underground pipes, powerlines from the house to the shed, invisible fence line for the dog, septic tank or well.

Yes obviously the height works for the plants shown in the video since that's my backyard and that's what I use. Tomatoes might need higher staking depending on the variety

Be sure with the Sky Pencil Holly not to have its roots waterlogged. Mine took a hit with that as the case. I'm still babying it back though.

I just wanted to mention on here for all who might read this -- I had a Hinoki Cypress for years and years....and so loved it. But we had a really cold winter in 2022-23...and it killed my VERY-ESTABLISHED Hinoki Cypress. I'm in zone 7B. I absolutely hated to lose it...and even gave it two summers to maybe show me that it could come back. Nope! :-( So be wary of that.

I could make the same exact videos and call them tips and nothing would change and perhaps would have give you less anxiety. But seriously don't watch them if they upset you that's just crazy.

My problem is, I don't have the money to buy enough plants. I have a 150 foot creek rock wall, with a planter along it's, across the front of our house by the street. On one hand, I LOVE IT! And I am thrilled to plant it. On the other, I can't afford that many plants at once. I can afford seeds though But majority of seed packs come in multi cors. And you don't know the color until they grow. So I don't know what to do.
@PrettyPurpleDoor
@PrettyPurpleDoor 13 күн бұрын
There are lots of places to purchase seeds of the same variety.... I'm sure local places have them and many online. Can also buy small plants called plugs. They take longer to grow but will be less expensive to purchase.

I love all of the pictures of the dogs you chose. Also, I never would have thought that the dogs would actually use the paths. I don't have a dog yet, (our both sadly passed away) but I LOVE dogs and plan to get one in the future and will keep all of the great tips you gave in mind when I redesign my backyard (also, hopefully in the near future). Also, just a note, if anyone buys the dog watering spigot that attaches to your water spigot, be sure it is not where it will get too hot (I live in Phoenix Arizona). I don't know how cold snowy weather would be with one. I love your content! Thank you Amy 💜

Nice ideas! Do you have any guidance on plants that can tolerate being peed on? I'm thinking of those poor short plants that typically line the paths. I just know my and the neighbor's male dogs are going to pee on them.
@PrettyPurpleDoor
@PrettyPurpleDoor 13 күн бұрын
Hmm. I don't know any off the top of my head. I'd assume plants that can handle nitrogen? Or maybe ones that are salt tolerant would work? I'd have to research it.

Thank you for this thoughtful video. I loved the tip about cutting a window in a gate or fence for my nosy dog. My dog is a patroller. He delights in being stealthy and loves to hide under shrubs while doing “reconnaissance.” Thus, I have limbed up a few shrubs so he can enjoy more of the garden while doing his thing.

Nice ideas when we have hot plants and dogs, too. Sometimes they don't get on very weell at all! I have hot two diggers as You show in the video and they did huge caves under the salvia! So I think I should create a kind of fence or something... I really enjoyed the video. Regards from Argentina.

I’ve always had dogs and we currently have a chocolate lab, a St Bernard and a 10lb mix. Three years ago we needed to dig up our yard and have it graded away from the house. I spent the winter before the work began paying attention to the paths they created in the snow and designed my back yard around that. I put six 4’x4’ raised beds on an angle to make it easier for them to run around, I put in paths where they were already running and added tall Karl foerster grasses and Joe Pye to make it more fun for them to pop out and surprise each other. The bonus is the entertainment value from watching them play. I did use your PLANT PERFECT ACTIVITY BOOK to guide me and it was the best money I’ve ever spent on landscaping. I highly recommend. I wish I could post pictures here.

My problem is the female dog I have, has pee'd enough to kill all the grass and I am left with dirt. Do you have any recommendations for vegetation that will survive the female urine?
@PrettyPurpleDoor
@PrettyPurpleDoor 15 күн бұрын
Sorry I have had several female dogs and just don't have this issue. A quick Google search gave me this, but I don't have any personal recommendations as it hasn't been an issue for me. Maybe someone else can chime in. Google ai overview: When looking for plants that can withstand female dog urine, consider options like hardy geranium (Geranium macrorrhizum), Japanese aralia (Fatsia japonica), native sword fern (Polystichum munitum), and certain types of grasses like zoysia grass which are known to be relatively resistant to urine damage; these plants can tolerate the concentrated nature of female dog urine due to their tough root systems and ability to handle high nitrogen levels.

Can you give her a spot of round gravel or mulch to empty her bladder? We trained our dogs to pee in a specific spot away from our patio so we wouldn't smell urine when we're outside. It can take some time to train, probably at least a few weeks of leading her to the spot on-leash before she "earns" her free-roaming time.
