The previous steward of the land, planted some fruit trees. I adore them but, they had no rhyme or reason to where they were planted( in the front yard). I decided to join them together to make a bed out of them and i struggle with making that garden look good. I started that project three years ago and cannot get that bed to come together fully. Tree placement is so very important. I wont cut down the fruit trees and they will surely outlive me so I'll just do my best. If they weren't so mature I would have moved one or two of them. Oh well, it will never be my favorite bed but it doesnt take away from the gardens. just the one......thanks for the video!

I agree with the importance of storage space and walkways. Last year I underestimated the width of several plants and I ended up with no walk spaces I had to jump, leap, lunge over plants…this year, I’m planning out walkways and taking the plants’ width into consideration.

I don’t have the money to hire a local pro. I have discovered the local agricultural extension office, and their website. Part of the enjoyment I get is the planning, and then seeing it happen. Thank you so much for these useful videos. I’ve already had a happy accident. I had to hurry and plant the garden beds outside the window over the kitchen sink (erosion control after grading to get a dry basement). I have a brick walkway planned for between the 2 beds. Once the cone flowers, bee balm, dahlia, etc started blooming, I discovered my view from the house is important, not only the bushes and flowers, but the enjoyment watching the birds and butterflies visiting. Quite a pleasant distraction when doing dishes. I never considered the view from inside before.

Wow, Amy, this is an information packed tutorial. You have given so many great tips. Over my years of retirement, I have expanded one flower bed several, several times. I love perennials because I get more bang for my buck because I can divide them. I am now reworking a flower bed in my front yard. It is the third week in Feb., I live in AL and I am chomping at the bit to start buying and planting. One of your tips that I do is I do make a drawing plan. See you next time.

I took 2 years of landscaping and horticulture in college. I'd never hire a landscape designer unless I wanted a very formal design. Our landscape is in a more cottage style. Which I love outside, but inside our style is eclectic. coastal, rustic and cottage with transitional and traditional accents.

🌹My storage is my PORTABLE dolly/hand truck w bungee cord to secure my large garden tools such as rakes, brooms, hoe, shovels. Closed metal shower hooks hold my water bottles and then 1st garden bag for hats, gloves, sunblock, protective eyewear, etc. The second is special projects, tape measures, garden diary, and so forth. The third is for gardening hand tools. And harvest basket is in my hand or on my wagon. After gardening I bring bags #1 & #2 inside, to edit and pre-plan for the next day, so when I am heading out to garden there's zero hesitation and less time wasted. I now have more time to enjoy the fruits of my husband's and my labor.🍎🧺

I suggest looking at any nearby farms, pay attention to what and how they grow. Same with local parks and government buildings. My father taught me beginner gardening by watching these locations.

I have never hired a pro to plan my garden and I always get lots of compliments on my yard. Planting flowers should be fun. not an engineering project.

I CANT AFORD A DESIGNER LET ALONE THERE EVEN BEING ONE IN MY AREA , LEVELS WEST VA MY HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1752 AND ITS FACING 1 WAY AND THE DOOR IS ANOTHER WAY THEN THE ROOF IS A 3rd WAY ! GOT ANY TIPS??? IM REALLY TRYING HERE , JUGLONE, DEER ,AND BARN CATS , ITS AN UP HILL BATTLE
