That’s one of the fun things about crappies. They will eat just about anything at times. There are definitely days where it truly matters however, especially if you want to be efficient, have the best hookup and landing ratio possible and make sure you are converting fish most of the time.

If yoou make a curved initial cut from the top to the back of the fin you can get more tenderloin and a full slab of side meat.When you remove the rib cage if you get your filet to the edge of your table you can roll the ribs out and on a good thick winter time fish your rib cage will be removed and your filet will look just as it did when you cut it off.After you are done soaking the filets out lay each filet bone side down and make an angled cut from front to back along each side of the blood line.Grab the blood line at the back of the filet and pull forward,this will remove the blood line and the top of the pin bones,should sound like a zipper when you pull them out.separate the lower part of the filet from the top and separate the tenderloin bye findinng the seam and pull about halfway to the tail end and cook the pieces separately for even amount of properly cooked fish .

Fillet northern pike's for more than 20 years. Never took the Y-bones out till after frying them. Personally I feel like this method is better for guests or people unaccustomed to taking the bones out of their cooked fillets. I save more meat by just taking the bones themselves out after cooking and likely spend as much time as one would spend doing the extra fillet steps. However I will give this a try to see how I like it next time, or for when there are guests eating. The video is great and I agree Pikes taste great and they sure are easy to catch with how aggressive they are.

I always cut behind both gills as soon as I catch them. They bleed out, and there’s practically no blood in the filets. In fact, recently I caught a 32” catfish, and didn’t even have to discard any red meat. It was also not bad tasting at all. Although, while I was cleaning my fish another guy can up with several large cats. He didn’t cut the gills or anything, and his filets were full of blood. They didn’t look appealing.

That walleye at 2:14 is my favourite colour. Usually from the weeds in tea stained water. In my experience, white, natural perch, hot perch, chartreuse are my reliable colours for jigs. I never get them on brown, orange, purple, black.

why is the k drill so slow??? I just bought a 7.5" kdrill for $47 brand new, only because of the deal and its light weight. but my hand crank eskimo was $25 plus $10 for the drill adapter and it cuts like lightning. Every video comparison I've ever seen on youtube of the K drill makes it look so painfully slow compared to everything else. But if you only need a couple of holes, it doesn't matter how slow the k drill is. oh, "its not designed to be fast" now I get it. haha.
@calebwistad3 күн бұрын
Any chipper auger blade is not going to be as fast as a shaver blade auger, (and that includes hand augers) it’s just my preference because the blades don’t dull as quickly and they are better for opening old holes and drilling in crappy ice.

The bigger the body of water I usually try the larger baits. But smaller lakes I stick with tungsten and plastics. I’m talking shallow weedy lakes. I’ve caught nice crappies in small lakes on a 1/32 oz jig with a silkie and that’s it. Here’s my secret. The smaller lakes don’t have much of a minnow or predator population. They are mostly cruising around filter feeding and if you’ve ever cut their stomach open they are eating invertebrates. White silkies with a white and black dot jig mimic this perfectly. Now if there’s a minnow population I use spoons but always have that invertebrate copy tied on. And also the smaller lakes I don’t use horizontal jigs I use vertical jigs so they don’t see much but the silkie. Play keep away from crappies and gills you have to work a little harder. So if you don’t want small gills drop your jig below them then rip it past them and if they dart away they weren’t worth your time. This is crucial midwinter cause I’ve worked baby gills for way too long just for something to do.

If you are not going to keep the skin, then leave a small section attached to the tail section and then flip the fillet out flat over the tail skin side down. Now run your knife between the skin and the fillet. Leaving the skin attached will give you more leverage to remove the fillet from the skin.

I’ve never really been bothered by the “slime”. Once you fillet it, it doesn’t matter. The way I remove the Y-bones is first cut the fillet into thirds, instead of trying to do it on a full fillet, much easier. My dad learned from an article about 50 years ago and taught me probably 45 years ago.
@calebwistad4 күн бұрын
I personally don’t care about the slime either but I know a lot of people who won’t keep pike just because of the slime. I haven’t seen the 3 piece method before.
