My nr 1: KEL HM-1: old cheap Canadian Chinese produced condenser. Amazingly flat response, super compact side address SDC, that sound like a dream on overheads! Have had some top mastering people think they were vintage Neumann's. Got a matched pair and one more single. Nr 2: Slate ML-2.. they can almost do anything really. Wit no emulation they are some of my best drum overhead mics and with emulation they are outstanding tom mics. Got 6 of those. As nr 3: SubZero SZM-10 , yep a 57 clone or is it?.. it has less midrange, more low end, and more top end. Love it on snare and hihat. And for many other things. Cheap as f*** but so versatile. Got 6 of them.

If there’s one great aspect of recording today….or being a musician in general, it’s that there are NO more excuses anymore. The quality of recording you can get with a sub $1K interface, and a few SM57’s is unheard of. There are plenty of videos showing how transparent mic pre’s are now, and what those may lack, these amazing plugins can compensate for. It’s truly a lot of fun knowing what we can achieve on a very reasonable budget. I’m old enough to remember when you had to spend a LOT of money at a pro facility to even come CLOSE to the quality we get now.

Thank you for your videos, they are really inspiring, i have followed your work with sleep token and Loathe, and really enjoy your hollistic approvach to procution and video making self interviews you make. Mixing is an ever evolving transition, to the point where mixes done 1 year ago, are not to be proud of, at least in my case, but the fact that there is people like yourself is really inspiring and thank you for always helping us underground mixers and engineers! cheers from Costa rica. Pd. i have subscribed for a long time now lol

It when after years of using great mics, going through my mic locker and finding the maudio Sputnik (my first tube condenser) I haven’t used in like a decade or more. I said to myself, why not. Threw it up. Realized that it sounds fantastic and now want to throw it up in vocal shootouts with my “nice” mics. I am now taking inventory of all my gear I never really use anymore.

@@GeorgeLeverG1 yes it is true I also can’t believe it. But it was a similar story. I recorded a song with him and we had a good time. I always wanted to learn more but it was hard to get the chance to. I asked him and he accepted. I followed your advise and it worked out. Thank you so much love your content!!

If you’re desparate enough you’ll get what you need for a good portfolio . I even started setting up open mics. The more you do the more people you meet and opportunities grow. Putting in effort and showing passion works. Even if you’re not as good as others .

Some people will learn the knowledge and still not be able to do sound engineering . Some people are more audio producers who have more creativity as well as organisation. Don’t get disappointed if you can’t do sound engineering after a few years. Look elsewhere, maybe music business A+R or that type of thing.

Line Audio CM4s are fantastic SDCs, for about £100. So good on many applications, but I really like them on overheads. And they're tiny too, which makes them very useful. Slightly above the Lauten's price bracket, I really like the Audix drum mics too. Especially the D4, which is also nice and deep but melodic on bass cab too. But with the D2 makes a good tom mic pair. I think I prefer them to the more standard Sennheiser MD421-II, which has an awkward physical design, clip problems and costs over twice as much. The Audix D6 is nice for modern kick, and dubby / subby bass too, nice to have alongside the more classic sounding Beta52A, and I prefer it to the D112 for deep kicks. And the Audix i5 can be more articulate on bottom snare (or guitar amp) than an SM57. Above that price range, Lauten's drum mics are really nice too, especially the snare mic sounds particularly good - would like to buy one.

As of right now, I think I've got 845 plugins? Surely a lot of plugins I will never ever need. Many MIDI Instruments but I think a whole bunch of Synths "just in case"

My problem with microphones, and also outboard gear is that if I love the piece I need 2 just in case I want to record or use it in stereo... I wonder if anyone else has the same affliction. Great selection. One mic that seems like a "hack" on Tom's for me is the CAD m179. It just has the right eq curve to my ears and I have to do little to no processing after the fact. Matt Brown, the drum genius turned me on to this mic and now I have 5 of them.

That makes sense.... That has been the best analogy for recording with different mics. Goes with other things well too for recording and also making a tone. I can't have that warm light in my house. If it looks like the sun is going down, I feel sad or uncomfortable. It is from my childhood and know if I see the sun going down to that kinda color I have to go home and do shit. Then sleep and do shit at school. White light. In a good bulb is my favorite because it reminds me of luxury. But I know people that doesn't care which one. They do care about their rgb stuff on the computer, mouse, gpu, liquid coolers have rgb... But obviously you can buy bad mics. So those are the people that only have warm small lights in their computer and keyboard.

White light reminds you of luxury? How so? Do what makes you happy, of course, but the general school of thought re: aesthetics of lighting is that white light is only used for task lighting - reading lamps, kitchen lighting, bathroom mirror lighting, etc. Something a little softer/warmer for general lighting is less harsh/clinical looking, and easier on the eyes.

I received my SA4000 MKIII last month after waiting 8 months. You can switch between the E series and G series style comps with the MKIII. I got the Fairchild MOD. I really love it. I was all in the box before this purchase and I feel it's an upgrade to the way I worked before (although, I still love the Softube Bus Processor). Changed my work flow a bit but, it's ok.

A very good drummer and an average producer/engineer can make $100 mics sound like $5,000. A bad drummer and bad producer can make $5,000 mics sound like a smartphone.
