I’m glad you like the content 😁. You need to have a furnace that could heat up well enough to melt iron. Iron melts when it reaches ± 1450° so with Furnaces like I’m using. That’s not possible😔

At the current place that I’m living, I can’t make myself that kind of furnace. Probably a coal or oil furnace with blowers to get higher temperatures. I need to look into that🤔

The moisture in the molds is creating steam underneath. You're lucky you haven't had a violent pop yet. Pre heat your molds to get all moisture out. You won't be getting those bubbles underneath.

There is a name for this mixture, and I believe it is Japanese? Mine came out amazing at an 80/20 ratio, but man, if not treated, gets real rusty and tarnished fast in humid weather.. I use scotch Brite steel kitchen scrubbers and it works pretty well

I’m not sure what the correct name is😅. And indeed, it rusts very quickly. Which is a shame 😔

I have had both , and both fell apart after around 10 to 15 good hot smelts of copper or brass !!! The insulation burned up or started to fall out !!!
@SJWCASTING
@SJWCASTING 24 күн бұрын
The insulation shouldn’t burn up after 10 uses. If it falls apart, the layer of ridgedizer/firemortar wasn’t thick enough. It should soak in really well when you apply it🤔

I just did this with my smaller vevor furnace, and I used hvac tubing. It was *so* dirty i had like 1/2 of the copper turn into SLAG?!? Is that normal??
@SJWCASTING

That isn’t normal, how hot you’d get the copper? Copper doesn’t give much slag at all.

You may have explained this and I missed it but what’s with the gloves covering the hose? Is it in case things go south and you get molten metal spatter on the hose?
@SJWCASTING
@SJWCASTING 25 күн бұрын
Yes, it’s to prevent hot pieces off material burn a hole in them. Sometimes a sparkle comes out from the scrap when you start to fire up the furnace. And it’s to prevent if a steam blow happens, Liquid Metal burns up the hose.
28 күн бұрын
I don't think I'd want to mess with copper with those results. Did you preheat your molds to drive any traces of water or contaminants out? It looks like a gas or vapor problem.
@SJWCASTING
@SJWCASTING 28 күн бұрын
I always preheat molds, tongs, pliers etc. 😉. I’m still not sure what went wrong but couple of weeks ago I got almost perfect copper ingots.

Really good attempt. Better than I did with my first attempt. I was about 12 or 13 me and a friend melted the lead over an open fire in the garden and the mould was damp sand in a bucket . Our thumbs gave us the mould shape and we hand made wire loops. But they worked. A long way from where I ended up, turning out 1,200 lead weights in about 12 hours, all trimmed and finished waiting to be sold. £10 worth of lead from the scrap yard would give me over £100 worth of lead weights. I used mostly do-it moulds, fast easy to use moulds and the leads came out clean with very little work to do when cast. Be carful using the devil forge melting lead as the melting point of your mould "Aluminium" is only 660 Degrees C, over heat the lead and you will melt the mould. I used to use a twin burner camping stove with a bottle and it was fast and ideal temp. I would melt on the left burner and heat tools and moulds on the right burner with a really low flame. Use an old stainless steel sauce pan to melt the lead and a stainless steel soup ladle to pour into the mould " don't trust the pan handle to lift full of lead as it will fail sooner or later. I enjoyed watching this as it brought back some good memories. Will be good to see where you go with it. Keep up the good work.

I’m glad you enjoyed watching my video! I still have the lead weights hanging in my garage not knowing what to do with them. Maybe I’ll remelt them in one huge weight.. Nice little business you had! I was thinking the same thing with the aluminum molds! I’ll need a camping stove, I’ve been saying that for years to melt lead and I never buy it😅. But this year, I’m buying one!! Old pots I’ll get at a thrift shop. Thank you for watching!!

How much in gas do you use tempering that? Looked like a all day process. It did change color and texture when it was done. Im curious: What happens if you dont temper them before using them? Do you need to temper the molds or just heat them up before pouring?
@SJWCASTING
@SJWCASTING 2 ай бұрын
Not that much since I didn’t had a lot of pressure most of the time. If you don’t temper them, you can’t get as much usage out of it. No, molds are made from graphite and only needed to be heated to extract the moisture

But what do you do with the copper ingots? most scrap yards will not buy them as they can't identify what's in the ingots, could be brazery, lead inclusions or anything not copper etc
@SJWCASTING
@SJWCASTING 2 ай бұрын
I sell them online. I have “proof” that they are 99,99% pure copper from the video’s. I didn’t go to the scrapyard with it yet, but they can cut it open to see if it’s legit or not. But then I sell at scrap value, which isn’t much..
@Gazr965
@Gazr965 2 ай бұрын
@@SJWCASTING Yes but a video is not a metal analysis, it's just visual of some ingots, scrap yards in UK will not touch backyard foundry ingots as they don't know the composition and also where the original scrap was from(EG stolen railway signal cable) and if they did buy them you will just a get a 'mixed scrap' price, so not worth the propane.
@SJWCASTING
@SJWCASTING 2 ай бұрын
@Gazr965 I know, but for me it’s easier to sell to people that way. It has more credibility of some sort. I know why scrapyards don’t want to take it. It’s the same with steel pipes, they always check if somebody didn’t weld it shut and put sand in it. To gain weight.. And that’s also why I sell them online, to get a better price😉.
