Does a person have to have lesions on the brain in order to be diagnosed with MS?

I had my first MS attack when i was 19. I had MRIs of my brain and spine. As well as a spinal tap. All i had was one lesion in my spine. They called it transverse myelitis. I had 2 more attacks in my 20's and early 30's. same diagnosis. It wasn't until mid 30's (i believe 36) that i saw my Neurologist for my migraines and he said its not common to get Traverse Myelitis 3 times. He referred me to Mass General where i was diagnosed with MS. It may not always be clear and may take years for a diagnosis. Things that all made it a diagnosis was i did develop a couple more lesions (so they could call it multiple sclerosis), vitamin D deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, having had Mononucleosis when i was 15 (that increases your risk by 50%). I have no family history but that doesn't always matter. Good luck!

Right now I don’t know what to think. My eyes hurt and I feel them get tired after trying to hold my eyes on something. An MRI and eye tests results show my optic nerve is fine. No optic neuritis. Yet the pain behind my eyes is very real to me. My neck gets stiff sometimes and I do get pins and needles on my feet and hands. The most scary is my hands shake sometimes. My MRI was clear though so I have no idea what to think. Right now I am in the processing of finding a neurologist and asking if I should do a spinal tap.

I thought i had MS, neurosurgeon told me i was being dramatic and was very dismissive. Mri came back with a brain tumours..so not ms but goes to show doctors can be quick to say..unlikely or very low chance of finding something on a brain mri .

Juat curious , whej you had an MRI dis you have it with or without contrast ? Ive been suffering similar symptoms for over a year and still have not been diagnosed.

I got that brain fog thing when Im super tired. Like no info wants to come in. And my tiredness doesnt go away after a night of sleep. Super annoying. So I do fun things get super tired after adn still stay tired at work day after and im like wrapped in bubblewrap thats how my tiresness feels like. Thats the only MS relates symptom. O and some lasting neckpain thats strains to my shoulder. Ps that neckpain gets worse when im tired.

Leaving this message in 2024, just so you know this video is still helping a lot of people. I haven't been given an official diagnosis but even before I saw this video, my neurologist is already mentioning the possibility of MS. And while I'm waiting to hear back on my Lumbar Puncture (spinal tap) results and what it reveals, I've been reading and checking videos like yours. And more and more, the symptoms are really lining up for MS. In many ways it would be a relief to finally have a diagnosis, since I've been going through non-stop hell for the last 4 years. So again, thank you for this. Hope things are going well for you now.

I have all the symptoms and had the MRI which showed lesions and thinning of the myelin basically two Drs said yes I likely have MS but didn't pursue it and 2 Drs said no the brain lesions could just be because of advanced aging they said I had the brain of a 65 yr old and I was only 46. I'm frustrated that nobody is pursuing this when my symptoms are getting worse. Do you have any suggestions?
