Is it correct that there’s a bit of danger when working with electronics containing tubes like this? I’ve only done mic builds and I plan to do the hairball 1176 rev A next, but I eventually want to do one of these, just don’t wanna fry myself in the process 😅

Hi Flewit! There’s always danger when working with electricity, including tubes. So long as you take your time, behave cautiously and follow proper safety protocols you’ll be just fine! Try watching a few videos on tube safety to see if you’re up for it!

I have one of these I bought from a respected tech who does work for big name acts here. Someone had it and asked him to mod it. He was doing work for me (recapping old Neve modules) and this unit came up. He was selling it and told me about the mods. I’ve used it and it does compress but I think a tube is going bad. It makes weird noises on one of the channels. Anyway, I’m not sure if it has Sowters or if the tubes are good but I was never really impressed with the thing. I was thinking last week of selling it as is. Your video makes me wonder if I should try to swap out parts and upgrade it. What do you think, sell it or upgrade to the best it can be? I’ve had it for over 12 years and if I can get a decent price for it, I’d rather put the cash towards something like a Curve Bender or something.

It's funny people sweat finding NOS tubes for Dumble clones when Alexander Dumble didn't give a rats ass about NOS tubes and always got new stuff.
@shoetiquemusic13 күн бұрын
True, but contemporary tubes were of a higher quality. At the end of the day you want something reliable and in spec. If that’s a vintage tube or a new one it shouldn’t really matter. It’s just a huge bummer there aren’t more options out there these days.

As far as the "alt" functions, most pedal manufacturers do this. It's a horrible precedent, for sure. Chase Bliss is the worst - tiny DIP switches on the back of the pedal. Good luck remembering what each does - and it depends on which 'mode' you're in, of course. MIDI clock... christ, could they make it any more convoluted? Hopefully once setup its saved with the preset. My Moog Matriarch has the same "bug", however it is documented, I was like you I couldn't figure out WTH was going on, assumed sync was broken. Read the manual, twisted the TIME knob and bam... worked fine. In fact, it is a div/multi... and used as a divider on a slower tempo, it threw the delay into some weird BBD noise metal sound. It is analog, so that is to be expected. Digital?? That is a software bug.
@shoetiquemusic13 күн бұрын
I tried a few chase bliss pedals and decided it’s just too much. Too much time messing with knobs and not enough time writing music. I’ve also learned I dislike nearly all music made with their products 🫠

I don’t use EQ when playing live. I use a combination of the tone knob on my guitar and any controls available on my amp. @@JustinHeronMusic Hmm interesting. How is your experience with it, how's the sound? When I have compared a real L2A2 with Slate's plug-in version, I've found that the hardware distorts the consonants of vocals nicely, and just had velvety saturation overall compared to the plugin, which sounds more clean and mid focused. I feel like I have to add some tape saturation afterwards to get a bit closer to the hardware.

I'm little confused with making balances TRS cables and what materials to go with for a simple, solid, TRS front patchbay cable?
@shoetiquemusic5 ай бұрын
I’m guessing you want something on the thinner side. Mogami makes nice stereo TT patch cable. For the plug you probably want TT (tiny telephone). Just make sure that’s what your patch bay needs. It should be wired similar to a 1/4” Trs plug. I would call up redco or switchcraft and talk to their sales reps. They’re good at pointing you in the right direction for parts selection. Let me know if there was something more specific you were looking for and I’ll try to help!
