Since humanity has existed, there has never been such a mind-blowing massacre, such an organized mass extermination of innocent, defenseless people. This is the greatest crime that history knows. But history knows many atrocities. After all, here is the extermination of an entire people.😥😰😭-Ludmila Shapira

isn't it ironic that the people who this song was written about, are now doing this to the poor human beings on Gazah. Now the words of this song are about the poor children there. Where should they go? every where they are told to run to for safety, they are killed. Never in my worse nightmares did I ever think I would see them do this to children. my heart is broken.

Is your heart breaking for hundreds of thousands of Germans killed in Allied air raids, many were Nazis but other were civilian Nazi supporters. Is your heart breaking for millions of Germans displaced from Czech lands and Poland and USSR as a result of Nazi defeat. Was your heart breaking when you saw "Gaza civilians" cutting heads off Jewish babies and raping women and killing parents in front of their kids I bet not. No one wants civilian victims but when they are shields for terrorists, when they pretend they do not have hostages among them, when they have rockets fired from civilian areas, civilian deaths are inevitable,. I am sorry that they are killed as a collateral damage but Hamas needs to be destroyed and your crocodile tears is a veiled contempt for Jews and the Jewish state. Also note the difference "people here" were killed for nothing but their ethnicity and religion not because they were in the middle of armed conflict...I am sure the difference is lost on you..We can see what you are a Judophobe....antisemite...If you are Jewish (khas ve'kholile) then you are nothing but a self-hating Jew... I think you should go to your "progressive no-nothing meeting or go shout "from the river to the sea" with other commies. You can forget my channel, please. I stand with Jewish people.

An (honest) question is though, who is the author, Wilner or Rumshinsky? In 1923 this song appeared in Joseph Rumshinsky's smashing hit operetta "Di Goldene Kale" (Golden Bride), which ran till 1941, with a different text. I performed in the two runs of the operetta in 2015 and '16 (a NYTF production), and the score and libretto were recovered by Michael Ochs and were later published in two volumes. Here are the transliterated lyrics of No.10: MEYDLEKH:
Mir zenen ale meydlekh mit gute sheyne mayles,
Gib mir gikh[i] a khosn, mir viln vern kales. Kalmen:
Kh’hob zey alerley, makht nit keyn geshrey. Meydlekh:

I am not sure it was a part of the original score or whether it was added for modern revival. I did not claim Wilner as the author, khas ve khulile....He is just a performer. In fact (mea culpa) I omitted authors altogether...:-(

@@yiddishsongswithtranslatedarye it certainly was part of the 1923 production; there weren’t any modern additions to the 2015/16 production. So yes, the question stands… could be Rumshinsky then.

Max {Menachem Mendel] Wilner was born on December 18, 1895 in Brzozów, Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Poland, Subcarpathian Voievodship) into a Hasidic family. His father was a cantor. He studied in cheder. He was a singer in the choir of his father and the city cantor. At home, privately, he studied Yiddish, German and Polish. In 1908 he joined his father in America. For 6 months Wilner studied at public school and worked in a ready-made clothing store. Wilner's cousin worked as a stagehand in vaudeville (he raised the curtain), and he often took him backstage at the theater. That is why, absolutely by accident, in 1910 Wilner played his first “role”: a policeman. From that moment on, he began to take part in performances of provincial amateur theaters. In 1917, Zygmunt Weintroib recommended that Bessie Tomashefsky take on Wilner as an amateur actor. Since 1918, he has been assigned the roles of a buffoon comedian. From 1922 to 1927, Wilner played at the 2nd Avenue Theater. He played the next season at the National Theater, but in 1928-1930 Wilner again played at the 2nd Avenue Theater. In 1930-1940, Wilner tried to film and act in films. In 1933, the film “Gelibt und Gelacht (Live and Laugh)” was made based on his script. Wilner was elected by his colleagues to the executive committee of the Hebrew Actors Union. Max Wilner died on April 15, 1956 and was buried in Mount Hebron Cemetery in New York. Below is the excerpt from his earlier biography from Zylvercwayg's Leksikon fun Yidishn teater: www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/yt/lex/W/wilner-max.htm
