I just finished carving the bowl section of a pipe. I used a dremel for all except the stem attachment part. Although I may have an issue because I have no idea what kind of wood it is. I just used a twisted, more dense part so it was harder. Hopefully it's not toxic. Some general grey, kind of smoother bark. White/blonde flesh. Seems to be at least carving well and no odd smells

How do you deal with resin build up in these pipes? From my understanding you can't soak them to loosen things up since they are made of wood. Do you just re drill the airway? Or do you just make a new pipe XD
@BryRunsByАй бұрын
Hmm, not the video to understand making a pipe, more like planning and assembly. “The wood isn’t square”, “okay now the wood is square”. I truly wish I knew the cost effective way to do this. Probably a different vod.

I made a pipe a while back out of some oak i got from my backyard. Bowl used a spade bit, which wasn't ideal, and i "sealed" it with a blowtorch, haha... But i made do with what i could. Smoking it actually tastes really nice, and so since i enjoy a pipe over everything else, i figured I'd really put some thought into this one. Watching this as i go to get some more insight on how to construct something better than what i have!

When your drill bit or saw starts to burn the wood while it's cutting that usually means one of two, sometimes 3 things. either it's time to sharpen that bit or you need to change the machine's speed. (sometimes its because you picked up a bit that was meant for masonry or metal by mistake)

Never use Ipe for a pipe. I tried that years ago. It made a beautiful pipe and polished out amazing. The problem was that I didn't know how toxic it was. I smoked two bowls through it and couldn't hardly breathe for a week afterwards. I have made a few from maple that were great. Holly works very good. Laurel is a good pipe wood, but it will start to have small cracks in a year or so.

I'm no expert, by any stretch, but I do quite a bit of reading and fiddling around in the shop. That said, I *strongly* advise avoiding Oak, Walnut, Hickory and Laurel. These have a high tannin content among other carcinogens and toxins. Soaking and washing is not sufficient to rid the woods of toxins. Not sure what site you were using but I would definitely get several opinions before starting a project. ✌️Stay safe and never stop being creative!

gary have you ever tried curved pipe stems? the indians use sumack for their stems so they can be hollowed out by using a heated wire or fine rod curved to shape of bend and pushed and burn through the sumach branch

At the start of the video, watching the bowl carve. “Shit, why isn’t he using a dremel?” Get to the part where you show what bits to get. “Well shit, there you go”

Appreciate the info on alternative woods. We have a farm where all the white oak and iron oak is getting harvested to make way for black walnut. Plenty of stumps to get material from for a while.

my brother in christ :'D after using that dremel head you have, I think you should aim to drill the smoke channel so it hits the bottom part of the convex/concave bowl drilling (where the vertex is). The excess "unused", "blind" drilling below the bowl's bottom would then serve as a superb Peterson-System imitation where condensation could gather without splashing throught the mouthpiece!
