I love my dice towers because I don't have dice mowing over minis and falling off the table. Very cool video.

Working in Academia is not for everyone. Please do not believe that a PhD can show how smart you are. It is nothing related to your intelligence. And not everyone is suitable to teach students at the university, it is a hard job nowadays.

People with a PHD or all kinds of letters past their name doesn't impress me. No popularity contests anyway.

Graduate school-esp. the PhD-is one of academia's biggest soul-destroying scams. I would end all PhD programs in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and significantly strengthening the Master's program to come to the level of the PhD. Academia in general is one colossal scam, and it should be gutted down to what works for the students' value.

I would be curious to know how many amps this is producing. That could theoretically give us an idea of how long it would take to charge a phone

I use towers purely for rolling in a small confined space we have on the table, without it my dice usually end up on the floor lol

I quit my PhD today. I talked to my supervisor to change my topic but she didn't allow me to do so and the area I'm doing was so confusing to me cause it requires a lot of chemistry and I'm sucked at chemistry and I didn't make any progress so i consider quitting is the best option for me.

Michaela, I relate to your story. I am from India. I was also doing PhD in a lab that specialises in nanocomposite biomaterials and wound healing until I quit. I felt the range emotions that you talked about. It felt like I was being choked. It was sucking my creativity, my soul out of myself. So I decided to quit and then followed through my decision. It was scary but my existence was in question. After listening to you I felt like sharing my own experience. It is nice to know that I am not the only who felt this way. Carry on the good work.

If you have a microphone so he can hear, couldn't you use some voice recognition algorithm's to detect when it should be passive or not, if you ask a command it follows it until complete then, it would go back into tracking mode. Make it like dummy in iron man so it can follow you around the house

Only weak individuals quit their PhD. They always regret it for life. I always find it funny that PhD dropouts have 1000 excuses to make themselves feel better.

Mining Lithium, Cobalt etc. Energy used? Slave labor, open pit mines. High tire n brakes usage due to massive battery vehicle weight? Factor in degradation of roads n hi-ways from x2 weight (repaving taxes). Factor in the massive battery grave yards and non renewable waste dumps in 10 years or so! It doesn’t end there!

I do wonder a few things: 1) I personally don't throw dice like this, mine go all over the table (more roll than bounce action): would that influence the result? 2) Many games ask you to throw 2-5 dice at once (look at e.g. Qwixx). Would that influence the outcome of the individual dice? 3) What about the material of the dice? You have wood, plastic, metal. I suspect wood and plastic will be similar, but metal has a very high density; will the beginning position have more influence? 4) What about other dice types? Most commonly used are d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. Are the others, especially d4 and d20 dice also random? 5) Does a dice tower actually produce a random result? Is there a difference between dice tower design?

Very late but some "AI Physical Board" searches brought me here :D exceptional, exceptional work. Except for my high-school electrotechnical excercises, i'm more on the software side of tech. Even in complete weakness, i love Go but play in person is hard around here. Still i would like to avoid grinding OGS or Katago with mouse & keyboard. Was wondering if something similar would be doable with cameras & image recognition, but still i would need some lasers to reveal next or suggested moves :D i'll think a bit about it. Very inspiring video

I just built the Lego self loading dice thrower ♥ (Version 2 worked/Version 1 & 1 improved version not so much). Because LEGO! I was getting a lot of 3 numbers out of 4 in a row. Which seemed weird! Not sure how many times out of 100 I would send dice flying across the room or the dice hitting the table before the catch box makes down in time to catch them. :)

My tip on doing a PhD. Do it on Hegelian philosophy applied in an analysis of James Joyce's 'Finnegans Wake'. That's what I'm doing. No one knows what you are on about. Even your supervisors

You don't need a PhD if you don't want to be a professor. Getting a PhD is like pooping. To poop, you got to have something in your belly. You also got to have papers. If you don't have anything, you can sit there for ages and not be able to complete your tasks. You also need papers when you go to the bathroom. Otherwise, you can't come out either. Of course, you can choose to walk away without papers but that takes a lot of courage.

There is something else going on with some bowls though. I just melted some butter in a ceramic bowl and it damned near cooked my finger in the half a second I touched it. Black spiderweb patterns had formed on top and it was hot like a stove-top after 2 x 30 sec.

id imagine the good thing about dice towers is that they r more standardized some ppl r prone to cheating and then just do some fake ass throw where they setup the dice in their hand and just drop them from like 2 cm without much force some may dont even actually do it intentionally, but its certainly easier to get a desired number/avoid one if u setup the dice correcly in ur hand

I'm not surprised. The dice are basically very hard springs as are the surfaces they are dropped on to. So it's the result of two springs colliding. At least with a tower you don't have to go under the table looking for dice.

You have to have passion for the topic you propose and can live day and night in finding a solution to the problem in question. So PhD is not meant for everyone, and your professors were shortsighted by recognizing you are a good fit for the program. Also, if you are a gold digger looking for high salary the industry offers, then academia is not for you because you are not getting paid adequately. However, what you miss though while working in industry is the mental congruence found in academia, as sometimes CEOs themselves don't have a mater degree and know nill about methodologies, creating a logical argument for business case and you get mentally exhausted because they don't have same mindset of academic folks who see things from an analytical view point. After all, PhD requires an immense passion, dedication, and thrive for self-actualization.
