Electric Cars On Dirty Power - Is It Worth It???

There are a LOT of myths surrounding electric cars - but there are also some good questions! If an Electric Car is using non-renewable energy, is it dirtier than Gas? How much CO2 does a gas car emit if you take into account it's whole life cycle? If an electric car falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? This video tries to answer some of these questions. Hope you enjoy it!

My gas powered smart fortwo with no fancy gas-saving batteries or features of any kind gets up to 60mpg if I drive efficiently with tricks like pulse-and-glide; usually around 40mpg in the city though. The math that really blew my mind last year was when I calculated the number of years the average consumer of animal products tortures animals every year.

I think you forgot the refining of the fuel. I mean you have to destill the crude oil, get the gas fraction and than you have to make sure that the Octane Nr. fits.

Mining Lithium, Cobalt etc. Energy used? Slave labor, open pit mines. High tire n brakes usage due to massive battery vehicle weight? Factor in degradation of roads n hi-ways from x2 weight (repaving taxes). Factor in the massive battery grave yards and non renewable waste dumps in 10 years or so! It doesn’t end there!

you missed the transmission losses, etc. Plus, you have to include the CO2 that goes into manufacturing the battery. Poor job, do it again.

I addressed the manufacturing in the video - because my calculation was on efficiency per mile of fuel used, the difference grows for every mile one drives. The manufacturing cost is a static, one-time cost and gets drastically overtaken by the higher efficiency of electric vehicles. The transmissions losses range from 8-15%, which though non-trivial, don't really affect the difference of ~60% in this calculation.

@@izzitMichaela What do "emissions per power plant" consists of? They do not seem to include the emissions associated with obtaining and transporting natural gas (building and maintaining gas pipelines). On the other hand, you included the emissions associated with making and transporting gasoline in your calculation.
