I assume, that it is some kind of Helltaker's, more likely Examtaker's, future. As we've seen in Helltaker comics, there are (were) lots of cataclysms happening on Earth, so, one of them might have ended it - and probably with a help of Heaven. Also, most of the med have died in this plausible heaven-earth war/cataclysm (we basically don't see any men in the game, only women!) While brightest minds of humanity and demonism are trying to save themselves trying to create perfect blend of a man and demon on the big ass spaceship (smthng like WH40K voidship) other people are trying to keep the ship, powered by some kind of ghostly power, running. But they can't fix it well enough, because they are in extreme resource shortage, and everything highly damaged can't be fixed to new, it can only be maintained to not let it die completely. Trying to fix it, as we see is extermely dangerous, there are many things that can kill you, and if you die you also will turn in the ghost, that will also try to murder people trying to make generators running, and increase ghost's numbers. Tunnel runners don't live long, as we've heard from Yaga, and it's probably penalty work cuz volunteers are extremely rare. And it's understandable - nobody (almost nobody) wants to work surrounded by ghost that want to murder you, broken door that will cut you in halves and damaged wiring that will turn you into coal. Humankind, lost its homeworld, is slowly dying out, Demons probably are too, all is doomen by the failing ship, and the only chance somehow is this weird human-demon blend.
