My favorite weird scene, in the weirdest (and funniest) WWII movie ever made! Two things absolutely “make” this scene: The thinly-veiled “lift” of Ennio Morricone’s “Spaghetti Western” music (in honor of Clint Eastwood’s participation in them), and Oddball’s stylish and sudden seriousness for the showdown - for once, Oddball is in almost “formal dress uniform” (echoes of Patton), and he not only unsnaps the holster on his Mauser P-08 but turns it half-sideways so that it rests on the upper edge of the holster, ready to hand 😎👍! Donald Sutherland was always a hoot, but I think Oddball was his greatest creation 🤩👍!

Tim Robbins seems like a weird casting choice for a hotshot young pitcher on his way to the majors. Shouldn’t he be about 20? He’s 30 when this came out but if you would have told me he was 40 I’d believe you. Of course today it’s impossible to imagine anyone else in the role.
