it is a funny movie and I get the veteran is trying to teach the pitcher, but in real life the catcher does not determine what is thrown. It's the pitchers decision and the catcher only making recommendations. Had a catcher in college that would throw a fit when our pitchers would shake him off. Don't know if he ever learned that it's the pitcher choice and that the pitcher knows better on what to throw some of the time.

@@allbrosdjaydoesn’t matter really like I’m this clip the pitcher wanted to throw the curve so the catcher said fuck it and let him throw it, doesn’t mean he can’t tell the batter what is coming so he can send one outta here to teach the pitcher a lesson not to shake him off especially when the catcher knows what he’s doing

without being condescending to you like some others are, I'll explain the context of this scene; this isn't MLB, it's single A and that veteran catcher (Costner) is there mainly to develop that hot prospect pitcher (Robbins). Robbins has a million dollar arm and a 5 cent brain while Costner has been around the game for years. The point of this scene is that Robbins needed to learn the consequences for not listening to his veteran catcher. This is the 2nd & last time in the film this happens

@Rodzilla At the time of this movie, they were still Single-A. They didn't jump to Triple-A until the late '90s. Regarding Nuke being brought up to "The Show": it's not uncommon for MLB teams no longer in the playoff hunt to bring up prospects to get them some experience in the majors.
@ColumbiaB4 жыл бұрын
Rodzilla - Early in the movie, when Crash first gets to the clubhouse and talks to the manager, he asks unhappily why he’s there; he’s peeved that they bought out his AAA contract to send him to Durham. That demand for an explanation makes sense only if Durham is lower on the minor league totem pole than AAA.

I had a short stint behind the plate playing for a friend of mine's team after I quit minor-league ball. The league was quite bush-league and there was only six teams so it became very easy to figure out and remember the hitters on the opposing teams. I would call the pitches for our pitchers and for the most part they listened to me. However, ANY TIME they shook off my sign they gave up a huge hit, half the time, being taters. Now, I never told the batter what was coming, but when I went to the mound the pitcher would have his head bowed. I would hand him the ball, give him a stern look, and ask him if he was done fucking up my ball game. Catchers are the captain of the field for a reason. Pitchers are stupid.

I was there for awhile, never did get that cup of coffee like Crash but I had a great time. I was in college when this came out. The whole team went to see it together. We laughed and had a great time but thought, nah that shit doesnt go on. Fast forward a few years and I found myself living most of what we saw on screen. I was a catcher and threatened insolent pitchers that I was gonna tell batters the pitches. I did it a few times when it wouldnt hurt the outcome. Our whole team was told a couple times what was coming, either because the pitcher was a complete ahole or management wanted to let him know who was in charge. Sometimes lessons need to be taught. Never had girls in the lockerroom but in Mexico we had them (and a tremendous amount of beer) on the bus. Mound discussions were often about who was the best "talent" in the stands. Again in Mexico, we had an old woman yelling at us putting curses on our bats, (if she had seen the movie she would have known to put it on the gloves and that the bats were already cursed.) Yeah, I would agree with Tony.
