My dad was a pastor who opened up many churches. On the truck ride to elementary school because we lived in a house out in the middle of nowhere on a private lake, and he always had shit to do in the mornings so he drove me, we'd be listening to Howard Stern just to hear what he'd do next. God I miss the mid 90's.

This is the key to Twitter/Facebook "engagement" and why you would see stuff in your feed that "provokes" you. They cannot get you to stick around and see ads if they only show you things you "like". The things you hate can make you stick around LONGER , much longer than the things you like. That's the definition of "engagement" in the Web 2.0 era of the Interwebz, and social media.

Stern was a pioneer in audience engagement. Hell, Stern was rage baiting before the term existed..along with any other type of “baiting” you can think of.. He knew it didn't matter why you listened; if you did, you were just another pair of ears. Anyone trying to sell something on the show wanted all those ears to hear about it, and that fuel kept the circus moving. Whether you were fascinated by the weirdos/offbeat guests, disgusted by them, insulted, insulted on their behalf, disturbed, intrigued, or simply entertained. It did not matter. You were one of the numbers, and all together, the numbers were huge aaand valuable.

Always found the film 'Private Parts' strange. Just as you think it's building to something interesting, just as I was starting to really enjoy it, it ends. I could've done with another 30 mins to see how far his career actually goes (not the way it is now - interminable and unlistenable - but at least until 1994), when he still had gravitas and credibility. He could've included a bit more Baba Booey and Jackie?. It's like he torpedos the momentum just as it was getting good (like when cuts Artie off too hastily during a glorious, epic drugs story lol).
