Familiar with so e of these spots. Just did Rainey Valley Trail from Marble Gap to Rainey Lake in Oct and it was one of the most challenging wilderness experiences I've had.

Looking to get into the marbles for the first time next year on a similar loop. Great video of the area! I'm guessing you went off trail from deep to buckhorn lake? How was that climb?
@SeattleSirHikesALot2 жыл бұрын
Awesome, and thanks! Yes, went XC to the lakes south of Deep and then traversed to Upper Wright Lake. It's been a while but I don't remember anything being too difficult....seemed pretty straightforward.

best video i've seen of this trail. i just discovered this trail after hiking the ridgeline trail of the sup's last weekend. i decided i really wanted to backpack the canyon that starts at the top of carney springs and drops into canyon lake. i was following the wash closely on google maps and found this trail :) would love to do this hike someday.

Just wondering, how well-marked is this trail?
@SeattleSirHikesALot4 жыл бұрын
Most of the route is not well-marked. You'll definitely want to have map, altimeter, and compass skills. I think most people use GPS, which would be very helpful. Something like 10% of the route is XC, and something like 30% of the hike is on roads, which are mostly dirt.

Nicely done, thanks for sharing. That sunset at the end at abq, nice way to end it! What were your favorite and least favorite sections?
@SeattleSirHikesALot5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I really loved most of the route, but my favorite sections were the Superstitions, White Canyon Wilderness, Aravaipa Canyon, Santa Teresa Wilderness, West Fork Gila, Monticello Canyon, and Manzano Mtn Wilderness. There weren't many sections that stand out as sections I didn't enjoy, but there were definitely some hot and exposed sections and some tough road walks... The miles between the Manzanos and Sandia were some of my least favorite.

@@SeattleSirHikesALot Thanks for the info. It does look like a lot of road walking there near the end. What was your start date? I'm going to be hiking the GET this spring myself, looking at early April to start from Phoenix
@SeattleSirHikesALot5 жыл бұрын
@@SeekingLost That's great you're going for it this spring! I started on May 6th.
@SeekingLost5 жыл бұрын
@@SeattleSirHikesALot Wow that's the latest start date I think I've come across. Everyone always seems to advocate for starting early to avoid the heat, but I didn't find heat to be that big of an issue in New Mexico on the CDT through April and May. Well now I feel much better about my "late" start date. Thanks!

Any tips for navigation? I plan on bringing Guthook, map with compass, and 2019 trail digest.
@SeattleSirHikesALot5 жыл бұрын
When I hiked the trail there was no Guthook or trail digest - I just used map/altimeter/compass. With the additional tools available I think you have it covered. I did a couple of hikes in the Cascades this year that incorporated parts of the PNT, and I came across 10-15 thrus... All said they had no issues with the XC sections to that point, and used the combination you will be using. Although some said they didn't like the XC. : ) Have a blast out there, it's a great trail!

There is so much to see and do on the Olympic Penninsula. My main hobby taking the dirt logging roads through the state and national forest, which is not part of the national park. No dirt roads actually go through the park, which is good. There is one logging road off Clearwater Road that gets you about 11 miles from Mt. Olympus for a god peak view, and you can clearly see where the logging stops and the park begins. I like taking logging roads because I am not destroying anything that hasn't been unsettled already, and it is nice to see all of the new trees they have planted for the second harvest. The drives along the Queets River and Quinault River are also quite spectacular. Graves Creek Campground is the most beautiful place I have ever seen.
