I think you made 1 major mistake in this video: Netflix didn't pay 250 million for Arcane, that was the cost for Riot Games for 2 seasons including that 60 million for advertising. Netflix only payed for streaming rights (allegedly 3 million per episode for season 2). I agree with you that Arcane is great and sets new standards, but the reason it is great is 100% Riot Games and Fortiche (=animation studio). Netflix is just the streaming partner to distribute it. Riot games has more projects like Arcane planned for the future and my guess is that the streaming rights will probably be (a lot) higher for the next one 🙂 ...
@bend316
@bend316 9 сағат бұрын
Even though Netflix didn't directly pay for it, I believe Arcane will still be the benchmark for all animated series going forward, whether they are producing or distributing. Netflix will still look at that budget and use it as a benchmark. Netflix will still use those viewership numbers as a benchmark. So even though they are just a distributor on this, it will still have lasting damage. At least in my opinion

@@bend316 I think Netflix will be realistic. They know the standard production/animation studios don't have the same deep pockets as Riot games and won't be able to fund taking 6 years for season 1 and 3 years for season 2 for a show. I don't believe Netflix themselves would ever fund a > 5 year production. Also, most companies that don't use a show as advertisement for a game will not be OK with losing ~7 million per episode. What I hope is that Arcane inspires more creative writing and animation and acknowledgement that good things take time. None of that is based in reality though 🙂.

@ haha yeah I love that you’re an optimist but with their past behaviors I just don’t have much hope and they do have a behavior of spending money for years and have nothing to show for it. For instance they gave the director of 47 ronin 55 mil and they never got an episode from that. But we’ll see. I hope good things come, but I don’t have much faith. But you’ll keep the faith for all of us

Basing off of the book, Wicked could be 4 full-length features. If you’ve seen the stage production, Wicked should’ve been a 5-hour long show but no one will sit through that. As a huge fan of Wicked, I’m glad the movie is in two parts. People should stop focusing on the fact it comes from one source material because the first part reads just fine as a standalone movie. And for those who don’t know the story as well as I do, if they never end up seeing the second half, I’m positive they’d be perfectly satisfied as it still fits perfectly with the Wizard of Oz lore. Only thing is, as someone who’s already seen the movie, they’ll definitely want to come back. I’m not worried about that.

i'm just afraid for how they'll pull it off and it may distance people away. I know where the first movie ends so I am curious on how they're going to fill the second movie since the second act of the musical is pretty light. But it all will come down to execution. As long as it doesn't feel like half a movie, I think it will be fine. But we won't truly know how they adapted it in terms of the second movie until this time next year. Great that you already saw it! I'll be watching it on Saturday.

Every single Disney animated musical after Hercules has hidden that it's a musical in the trailer. Mulan, Tangled, The Princess and the Frog, Winnie the Pooh, Encanto, Moana, the Lion King remake, Frozen and most ridiculously of all, Frozen 2 (not an exhaustive list), all had trailers that hid their respective movies' main selling point. Even Enchanted, only partially animated, got in on the prank. Any singing, they try to pass off as either incidental background music or a 3-second gag in an otherwise non-musical movie. They're still pulling this nonsense with Moana 2 and Mufasa. The thing is, I don't know that you're right about Wicked being different. The trailers that they've actually put in theaters are hinting at it being a musical in a "plausible deniability" kind of way. You hear the actors singing, but it's in the background where it might just be an unrelated song added for the trailer if you don't know. There are a few very brief shots of ensemble choreography that you might just take as the movie being quirky. And you see Ariana Grande's back during "Popular" so you shouldn't see her mouth is moving. It's an edge case, since it's definitely clearer it's a musical than in the aforementioned Disney movies or Mean Girls. But it still shows a belief that people just don't want to see musicals, which, I mean, then why are you making musicals? Clearly you think someone's the audience for it. You don't think telling them there are songs in the movie from famous songwriters might get them to buy tickets?

Gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on the marketing end as its not just the trailers and featurette's but recently in the past couple weeks they've released new featurettes for multiple songs across not only KZbin but also tiktok and other various social channels. I get what you're saying about the trailers though. It's like they're touching on it but they're afraid to go full musical just in case they go a tad too far. And I'm not a fan of them baiting people either. Marketing is in a weird place. I've worked on movies and they specifically said we can't market it as a musical, even though it was, because musicals never tested well with little boys.

I was worried when the first bits of marketing was released and they were being coy about it being a musical. They've done a good job of correcting that in these last couple of months. Not making it clear that this is just Part One will create a backlash. It's a matter if the quality of the movie can endure it that criticism.

Yeah I’m happy that they’re advertising it this way and I’m hoping it works out. For part one they are ending at the end of the act 1 musical, but I’m more worried for the second movie as Act 2 is really not that long in the musical so that may really seem like part of a movie so that may cause a lot of backlash

It’s seems like now, the only way a musical can be profitable is if the movie is animated and caters to children. It worked for “Encanto” and “Moana 2” is projected to make a ton of money upon its release.
@bend316

Even that I do see waning though. Like I said, Smallfoot was not advertised as a musical and Lego Movie 2 was a musical and they didn't advertise that either. With Wish, they did advertise it as a musical and it did very poorly, but that could be contributed to the fact that it just was not a good movie. But even with Moana 2, they haven't fully started marketing it as a musical, even though everyone knows it will be so curious to see if they start releasing songs or anything like that in the next few weeks as it comes out

What I hate about all this argument of 'musicals haven't been doing well in recent years' is it's completely down to the marketing but also the world we lived in even early last year we were still sceptical due to the pandemic. Studios assumed we would know and want to see these musicals but the musicals on Broadway themselves weren't even that big compared to Wicked, Phantom, Les Mis. The mean girls musical hasn't even been performed outside of the states so not marketing as a musical was weird it's can't rely on just name recognition if people dont know. In the heights is famous but to the general public it's not, if anything the smaller musicals and shows that turn into movies should advertise it's a musical more.

Considering that Lionsgate still has other movies besides the blockbusters that flopped this year, I know it wouldn’t shut down because of 3 movies. Every Movie Company has their share of box office bombs and none of those companies haven’t fell down under because of that. Most of Disney’s movies had been failing at the box office, but Disney’s still alive. Same goes to Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros.
@bend316

Its not just their blockbusters though, their past 7 films have all done horribly and they haven't had a genuine hit in quite some time. They have a lot more flops than hits and their hits are not nearly big enough to offset those costs. With other studios, sure they do have misfires and bombs, they usually have a hit later down the line that can offset some of the cost. It's not just a misfire for Lionsgate, its a pattern and they used to have franchises that used to offset a lot of the costs when they hit, but now their only real profitable franchise is John Wick, which may be running on fumes.

Personally I don’t think so as Dead Reckoning didn’t do well at the box office at all, but that also had other factors like Barbie and Oppenheimer. But they just announced today the new MI movie is going to be called The Final Reckoning and the home release is just Dead Reckoning, no part one, so I think they realized their mistake. As for Fast, I think X was a failure since it made 700 on a budget of 300 and F9 made around the same and it was released during peak COVID times. Telling one major story over multiple installments is fine, as long as it feels like each one is an actual movie. Like recently Across the SpiderVerse felt like its own movie even though that too was conceived as a part one and two movie as well, but they pivoted away as well and changed the titles

I hope they make a few critically acclaimed and financial successes soon. Heck, Hollywood in general isn't doing that well lately. I hope the film industry makes a genuine, positive comeback.😥

@ we’ll see. I have hope, but not much. With the strikes of last year, hopefully there will be more movies coming out in 2025, which AMC in their earnings call yesterday said there will be, but we’ll see if they’re more quality than we’ve been getting.

I'm actually intrigued by this Ballerina John Wick spinoff. When I watched JW I was curious about the Ruska Roma syndicate and their female ballerinas and male fighters. So in that regard hoping we'll get more insight into them. Female action movie like this needs to be less "woke girl bossing" and more "actual female girl bossing". If they don't get that right, it'll definitely fail. Making a mirror image of John Wick will fail.

@ yeah I’m curious about it too, just didn’t understand why they went that way instead of the many other characters they set up. I have a feeling if they don’t land it, it will spell a lot of trouble for John Wick as a whole. Especially considering how John Wick 5 is apparently already in the works.

I'm really surprised with how much I've ended up loving the show, where for me it went from being just kind of ok to being one of my favourite MCU shows. I think how it developed and grew, especially from episode 6 onwards, helped re-frame a lot of the earlier episodes and made them far more enjoyable to me on rewatching. It's similar to Wandavision for in that sense where I didn't really care for the start but it stuck middle and landing so well that it completely changes it. And while I think Wandavision was more even and better executed overall (I still don't get why they rushed episode 5 of AAA), I think I might just like this one slightly more.

Yeah i grew to really like it too and it really came together around episode 6. It's definitely going to hit differently watching it a second time seeing everything played out with a completely different POV. As far as the ending, I do feel like it's one of the few marvel shows to stick the landing. Overall its really great and I think the fondness for the show will only continue to grow.

I's a crime saga. We're getting Harvey Dent. It's going to be epic.

That would be cool and interesting if just as The Penguin is kind of like 'what if the sopranos was in batman' they shifted to make a courtroom drama detailing Harvey changing into Two Face

@@aaronhuff2813 Haha yeah but less procedural kind of like how apple is doing courtroom dramas like Presumed Innocent. Like one season would be one long court case where he's going up against a villain, maybe even Zasz or someone and it ends with him becoming two face. I would love to see that.
