Neat idea. Perhaps orient the tape flat on the surface with felt underneath. And pass the wand over it instead of by it? You could then have flat strips of tape that can be loaded as a rigid strip of choice audio.

Well I was not aware of that, but then I myself was also doing this 10 years ago, as you can see here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqaVkGyCZrajaJI Anyway I'd certainly be interested to see what exactly Trent was doing 10 years ago if you would be so kind as to send me a link. But i have noticed a pattern where commenters say that this has already been done, and then it turns out that the thing they're referring to involves manipulating audio tape, but is otherwise unrelated to my project.

I find it really interesting how Jazzy Jeff went "wait, with cassette?" and you went "no, with open reel". Then for the final product, you are using cassette tape. How does it get unwound from the shell into the new reels for the ScrubBoard? That seems like a potentially pretty interesting mechanism (I'm imagining VHS inspired, though perhaps manually-operated).
@jeremyseanbell
@jeremyseanbell 20 күн бұрын
Hah, yeah I thought about that too. My guess is that he was probably thinking of that "Mr Tape" video when he said that. It involves a kind of tape scratching, very impressive but not at all like what i do. Anyway, to answer your question, the tape is basically just extracted manually. I show how I do it in this video i made with an earlier prototype. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJOki2V5otiXsK8 I would love to do something like with a VHS transport mechanism, but that proved to be too complicated.

I’m so glad and happy for you that you have eventually got it to fruition bro.. I will definitely be preordering 👌🏽😎 I even made a primitive version of it for a uni project for my ‘experimental music’ module and based it on your original idea… good on you for eventually getting it off the ground bud! 😎👍🏽

Thank you for for hanging in there @uk2chinanback583! Looking back, I think it was probably for the best that my original kickstarter campaign ten years ago didn't get funded, because the concept wasn't ready back then. I still had a lot of research and experimentation to do. But now I have all my ducks in a row and it's ready to go! Thank you for your support!

I know that any LP can be “scratched” or scrubbed… I think there are LPs that are produced just for scratching that don’t have any real music content, but rather loops or sounds. And yes, Serato decks do have a timing LP to scratch MP3 files… I was curious to know if there was any dedicated scratch loop tape cassettes? Are they available with this kit?

Congrats on getting this done, looks really fun! Does it also have functioning transport buttons for changing the section you’re scrubbing without having to remove the tape by hand?
@jeremyseanbell
@jeremyseanbell 4 ай бұрын
I wish I could have included a transport motor, but that really proved to much more daunting than it might seem. That's why my other devices use tape loops instead of reels of tape. Tape loops are so much easier to motorize than reels.

This has to be the dumbest thing in the WORLD. If you want to play tapes, get a good or great cassette deck and for God's sake, don't touch or pull the tape out of its shell. Record a great vinyl record to the tape, or maybe even a CD that is starting to get disc rot and won't be playable in a few years. Scratching is useless ghetto noise. You can drag a stick on the ground or across a metal roof to make "Scratching Sounds".
