A couple of people have asked why I don't just have the loop go under the board, so I don't have to flip the tape with nails. This is actually something I've thought a lot about since building it. Part of the reason I didn't do it this way is because my idea for the design keeps changing, and the concept for its current design was not fully formed when I started building. But now that I'm thinking about it, it would have been much more difficult to mount the pinch roller assembly if I had done it that way. With the current design, I was able to take the guts of an old Walkman and remove everything except the pinch roller, and then just screw it flat onto the board. But to feed the loop under the board would have meant working out a way to mount the pinch roller on its side, which would have been tricky. But I will definitely revisit the idea when I make my 3-D printed version -- stay tuned!

I actually did a lot of searching to see if anything else like this was out there -- where the scratching was done by moving the play head instead of moving the tape. I did find one guy who built something with a movable play head, but there wasn't any mechanism to keep the head aligned with the tape; you just had to move your hand in a perfectly straight line. That was the closest I could find to something like my design.
@jeremyseanbell7 жыл бұрын
P.S. Thanks!!
@NicholasBryantBonzaiSequoias7 жыл бұрын
Marvelous! Maybe use non-ferrous nails (brass?) as the ones you have now will magnetize eventually.. What about using the playback head signal mixed in to the record input..? Scratchy delay effect!
@jeremyseanbell7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nicholas! About the nails, that is something I really had not considered. I did spray them with a coat of graphite powder - would that help... or make it worse?
@NicholasBryantBonzaiSequoias7 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of the nails deteriorating the magnetic signal on the tape.. but I read above of Fab Lab.. so you could 3-d print the tape guides! Would you consider a 1/4 inch tape version too..? I still have a box of 7-inch reels and would think the faster tape speeds (3-3/4 and 7 IPS) might make scratching easier.
@jeremyseanbell7 жыл бұрын
Yes, when I build my next prototype at FabLabs, I'll definitely start over from scratch and use custom parts instead of odds and ends I find around the house! Regarding 1/4 inch tape -- yes, this has always been the dream! The problem is that it's a lot harder to find parts from old reel to reel decks. I actually am already running at 3 3/4 IPS, and I could definitely see going even faster once I go to 1/4 inch tape. Not only would 1/4 inch improve the sound, but also I'm sure it would be less difficult to get the head to align properly.

While it'd be really _really_ cool to see this as a published & finished product, in 2017\18 it's more or less a distant dream from my perspective. On the other hand, some kind of kit containing measured bits\parts to replicate, more or less, what you've accomplished, only with more readily common tape recorders [ones suitable for the purpose which aren't rare] is an alternate possibility. That could be a product in itself.

Very cool stuff! I was thinking... What if the motor is underneath in a vertical position? Then on the top there would be only a strip of tape that disappears into the board without the need for ever flipping the angle of the tape. Maybe it could be a box with all the mechanical stuff inside?

Such a cool idea. Would bigger loops be possible, utilising some sort of container with the tape loosely packed inside like old tape echo units? Like, if you open up the lid of an old space echo or echoplex, theres the little flat box with a long loop which is just zig zagging back and forth but moving freely. I'm sure you've already thought of that, who am I kidding :D With the resurgence of interest in tape right now I'm surprised the big companies aren't tripping over each other trying to get to your door.

Awesome stuff. Why don't you just put the tape mechanism on the underside of the board? That way you don't have to use the nails to flip the tape, it just stays flat but loops under the board and back. Another idea I had while watching is that you use some sort of a track or slot to guide the tapehead (scrubber) over the tape. If you would leave some slack on there so you can move up and down a bit, you could switch tracks by moving the tapehead (scrubber) one track up or down.
@jeremyseanbell7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. About the loop assembly - I was wondering if anyone would ask this! If you're interested, I posted a detailed answer in a comment above. Regarding your other idea, it's a great idea, but I suspect that implementing it would require machine precision. With the handmade prototypes, it's hard enough as it is to get the play head to align properly!

I'm experimenting with Tape Heads myself, however I'm getting a lot of unwanted noise - how have you kept noise to such a minimum with your playback head? Many thanks.
@midrangemicro67157 жыл бұрын
Not sure if it's still relevent but make sure the head's metal shell is grounded to its output ground. If it's just hanging around not grounded it'll pick up a lot of noise. Also, avoid any 3G\4G\5G \ WiFi signals. *Also* if you've made extensive mods to the circuitry itself make sure any solder flux [clear brown resin] is cleaned up [alchohol, 99% does fine].
@jeremyseanbell6 жыл бұрын
Here's what I did: I touched each pin and found the one that decreased the noise when I touched it, instead of increasing it. Then I used that pin as my ground/shield. I used conductive foil on the enclosure so touching it grounds it, just like with an electric guitar, and of course I bought some nice multi-conductor shielded cable.
