The Clouser Swimming Nymph is a great fly for bouncing along deep runs, pockets and holes for Smallmouth Bass. Bob Clouser published a great book on many of the flies he has developed over the years and the Swimming Nymph is one of my favorites when I need to get a fly deep and kept in the zone when Smallmouth fishing. Clouser Flies ( amzn.to/3SCNS84 ) is a great book if you happen to be in a situation where Smallmouth Bass is your primary target. There are many great flies along with wonderful photos, detailed step by step instruction and LOTS of patterns for many species. Add some Swimming Nymphs to your box in Olive, Brown and Black in sizes 6, 8 & 10 and you will be catching bass and panfish all day. - - Enjoy

I'm guessing Bob Clouser designed that fly for Susquehanna smallmouths, but it is one heckuva carp fly!

Correct, the Smallies were the focus. It is a great fly for many different species. - Ian Anderson

And "attracter". I've been fishing since I was about 12 -13, I'm now 81, haven't used any of those terms. I used flies as "catchers!

But the fly has to attract the attention of the fish first. - Ian Anderson

Please explain what you mean by "stimulater" and "indicater" and what the differences are and when which is best for what conditions...

Essentially, all flies are stimulators in the sense they stimulate a response from a fish. That said, flies that are tied that do not specifically try to mimic a particular food source are considered "stimulators". Stimulators are good for when you do not know just what the fish are focused on. If there is little or no surface activity or you are fishing new waters often a stimulator type fly (also sometimes referred to as a "searcher") can help determine what the fish are in the mood for. Stimulators can also be used as an indicator. If you are fishing nymphs under an indicator you can use a "Hopper Dropper" setup where the hopper fly is a stimulator such as a Chernobyl ant or a Humpy. This way you are presenting two options to the fish and can more quickly determine what they are interested in. - Ian Anderson

Beautifully tied! Is your vice a LAW vice? I know they are no longer made. Do you know anything about the ones made in a similar pattern by HMH or others and if they are of similar quality?

The vise I am currently using is a FNF Talon vise (www.fnflyfishing.co.uk/products/fnf-talon-vice?variant=39318845653076). Similar to the Law vise. I am enjoying it. It is very sturdy and holds a wide range of hooks. I have not had any experience with the HMH vises other than I know a few people who use them and like them very much. - Ian Anderson
