I have a question for you. I have never done any construction, but my wife and I have 35 or so acres in Maine, 30 of it is wooded. We have been considering putting up timber frame structures since the wood is free and just sitting there ready to be used. I know the timber frame goes up green, but did you also put up the siding and interior planking green, or was that dried for a bit? I have no idea how much shrinkage is to be expected. Any timber framing books you've read and recommend? There's certain aspects I can't find covered on KZbin. Thanks, and awesome job!

Out of curiosity,how do you plan to prevent galvanic corrosion?
@barnbuiltbearhawk726710 ай бұрын
I have three sets of rules for that wet space, dry space and critical system. The inside of the airplane is considered dry space. Very low risk of corrosion occurring. Additionaly, the airframe has a robust coating system that will protect the 4130. Lastly, and only on interior panels, I am using aluminum hardware so that they act as the anode as they are easily replaced if corrosion does occur. I have different rules for a wet space and any critical system.

What is your rule of thumb for how much epoxy to mix when infusing? I’ve created several successful hand layups to replace my aluminum belly panels with carbon ones on a super Cub. I use the weight of the material and match that with the same weight of epoxy. Resulted in a 50:50-40:60 resin to fabric range as is the goal, as best hand layups can be.. My attempts into infusion have been a little more challenging. Seems like I mix too little or too much, and am chasing a magic starting point. Any quick tidbit would be appreciated as your parts are on point.
@barnbuiltbearhawk7267 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the compliment! I have not been weighing my carbon prior to layup. The more I handle it the more it comes appart. I have been taking a guess and monitoring closely. If the resin feed gets low I quickly mix and degas more. ....but, you have to be on it. If you have to pinch the feed to wait on degassing it will impact the finish. I am not good enough yet on getting the right volume from the start.
@stevebrown5819 Жыл бұрын
Good comment below on the stiffness of carbon fiber. Was that considered? The engineering episode seems to be is missing. The internet is full of un-engineered carbon fiber videos. People tend to think that carbon fiber is stronger than anything it's replacing so there is no engineering required. Maybe that's OK. Maybe not. There should be NO maybes in aviation. It would be lovely to have that Oratex fail in a crash and have a steel tube break your back.
@barnbuiltbearhawk7267 Жыл бұрын
You bring up good points. Yes stiffness was considered. I try to keep the videos short so i might not dive into the engineering on every choice. Whether carbon fiber is stronger or not depends on the material you are comparing it to. I 100% agree with no maybe in aviation, we have zero tolerance for that in the Aerospace industry. I have seen a few methods to do the back. All with pros and cons. What approach would you have chosen?
@PDZ11224 ай бұрын
