My first car was a 64 Bullnose. Fantastic car, wish I still had it but it rotted out badly by 1973. Changed my life as I ended up a technician at a Saab dealers for 11 years. The worst thing on the car though, was the front drum brakes. They faded when stopping from high speed and you were left with no brakes at all. The Saab engine was very popular with sidecar road racers back in the day. Won lots of big rallies against Porches, Healys, Minis and the like with drivers like Carlson. The works cars produced double the power of the standard engine at 80bhp. The car was very light and handled well especially in the snow. I had many V4 96’s and raced one with a 2.8 ford Granada engine that fitted straight onto the Saab gearbox. This produced 130bhp but never handled like the 2 stroke

Virtually standard cars, a lifetime ago. It'd be interesting to see the results if modern manufacturers used a standard car today.thsnks for the upload.

I bought a new 1969 Saab 95 wagon V4 and traded in a 1968 3cyl Saab wagen as part of the deal. I found out that I could get the roller shade and pull cord from the dealer that mounts in front of the radiator and that cord fits through a slotted bracket just left of the steering wheel under the dash. It was very useful in Colorado in the winter and you could raise or lower the shade as needed for engine heat. I can't find any mention of this gizmo on the internet now. Have you ever heard of this or have you seen a Saab with one installed.?

My father bought a new 900 Ems in darkred in and out in 1981 ... since then I love 'real' Saabs .. and one of my dreams is to find an affordable 96 V4 .. load it with my Stratocaster and Amp .. make it from Munich to just about north of Rovaniemi . and play some tight Blues to the soul of the land :-)

Hate to rain on your parade boys, but when you wind it up in the indirects, the alloy gearbox casing distorts and this causes the bearings to run. The inner drive shaft joints aren't that hot either. Oh, and V4 engine is suspect, too. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit

About 50 years ago, I used to have a Saab V4 with a spec 2 gearset and 7/38 final drive (not quite as low as this one which was 6/35) and, of course, it had a steel gearbox casing. So no problems with the alloy gearbox casing! I never had any problems with the inner drive shaft joints.

@@IanMcKean The cases people call steel are actually cast iron...There were both early smooth cases--from 2 strokes and the later ribbed cases....I have one brand new of those remaining in stock... It turns out the biggest problem is the ring gear siide caps... And that is a fairly easy problem to cure..The caps were milled flat and a thicj steel "girdle" was used and well as studs, rather than the OEM bolts..Same like many ening main bearing caps got girdles...That helped on life of bearings and stability but ring gear failures were always a problem..It was the cause for me to DNF a number of rallies including the Saab 96s last rally in the WRC series when my ring gear spat up 3 teeth on SS 19 at the 1986 WRC Olympus Rally in December 1986..Homologation ran out 3 weeks later.. 9 years later the car would go on to win a US National Championship round , and finish the year 3rd in the US Performance Rally Championship...The same car is currently getting new floors and sills..
