Yeah go ahead and laugh. But that car won rallies against Porsche, Ford, Mini and all the other cherished rallye greats...
@CreRay4 жыл бұрын
What’s there to laugh? It’s just a cool compact swedish family car from the early 60s. The 2 stroke wasn’t per se what customers wanted around that age but it still sold well.

My first car was a 64 Bullnose. Fantastic car, wish I still had it but it rotted out badly by 1973. Changed my life as I ended up a technician at a Saab dealers for 11 years. The worst thing on the car though, was the front drum brakes. They faded when stopping from high speed and you were left with no brakes at all. The Saab engine was very popular with sidecar road racers back in the day. Won lots of big rallies against Porches, Healys, Minis and the like with drivers like Carlson. The works cars produced double the power of the standard engine at 80bhp. The car was very light and handled well especially in the snow. I had many V4 96’s and raced one with a 2.8 ford Granada engine that fitted straight onto the Saab gearbox. This produced 130bhp but never handled like the 2 stroke

My Uncle had one of these and loved it. He bought it beecause it drove so well in the New England snow. Years later I bought a used 1969 96 with the FoMoCo V4. We used to do donuts in the snow.(even before I had a license, lol). Had to fix the slave cyllinder when bought, and later get the tie-rod mount welded. It shifted well, but sometimes the nylon ball in shifter would pop the spring when going into reverse, and shifter came out in your hand. You just popped it back in. Finally mom said it had to go. I advertised it for $200. Got a call from a girl who asked if it could make it cross-country. Her husband had joined the Marines, and she wanted to drive out from Md. to his station in 29 Palms Ca. I said yes, I think so, and showed her about the shifter. 'Got it' she said. A couple weeks later I got a post-card from her, the old Saab had made it, in 3 1/2 days of almost non-stop driving she said. Great! I thought about it later... why wouldn't it make it, the 96 was one of the best little rallye cars ever made.

My first own car was Two Stroke Saab 96 -66 with the long hood (for next generation V4 engine) and I really liked that little car. It was fun to drive and the triple carburetor was awesome to service. Once I did it outside at night at -25 C below zero.
@jackheinlein20317 жыл бұрын
I miss mine. I had what I believe they called the Monte Carlo model. Oil injection pump with a reservoir so you didn't have to add oil to each gas fill-up. Also had three carburators one for each of the three cylinders. They also had a lever up and to the right of the accelerator pedal that enabled the driver to allow the car to freewheel. You could accellerate and when releasing the accelerator it would freewheel. Reduced fuel consumption. Flip it back if you wanted to downshift to use engine for deceleration. Very simple to work on the engine. No EPA stuff. I could remove the engine in about 15 minutes. Engine weighed about the same as a keg of beer

Freewheel yes, deceleration with a 2 stroke engine, seriously?🤔

My father bought a 1959 93B new, early in 1959. He gave it to me in 1967 as my first car at the age of 16. I learned to drive in it and spent the next two years having a blast in it. This was a "drivers" car, as not everyone could just jump in and take off. You had to understand the 2 cycle engine, front wheel drive, freewheeling, and of course, driving a 40 horsepower automobile in traffic! Alas, in my senior year of high school, I was bitten with the muscle car bug and bought a 1965 Chevelle Super Sport, 327, 4 speed, which the girls preferred over cruising in a Saab. Fond memories in the Saab, actually more fun than the Chevelle!

The good ole days were Great, i had a similar time, Those little cars were actually more fun, I had 2 old VWs (1964 n 1965), back in 74', which I traded with my older brother for a 63 Impala SS.. M22 Muncie 4 speed, Headers, Air shocks, etc.. Eventually I traded it back for my Bugs, LOL.. the best days were the Crazy days.. But today, I sure wish I kept that Impala SS..

Both the 1965 and 1967 were 850 CC three cylinder engines. There were different things about them though. The 1965 was more traditional of the two cycle engine in that you had to add a can of 2-cycle oil to a tank full of gasoline. I remember buying this "Golden Spectro" that came in a can slightly smaller that a Quart can. (there were yet to be invented the plastic oil bottle) The 1967 had what was called oil injection. There was an oil tank that you had to keep full and oil was metered into the engine. My 1967 had the 3 carburetor engine. The fuel gauge had a low fuel warning light that I assumed meant that obviously aside from , well the obvious, that it was also safe to add a can of oil and fill it up. I cant for the life of me remember how large the tank was? 12 gallon and the warning came on with 2 gallons left? 1967 was the last year for the 850 CC engine, pretty sure about half way through production, Saab introduced the V-4, but I do not know if it was the 1500 or 1700 CC 4-cycle engine. I had a 1971 Model 95 station wagon with the V-4 that was a great car but had weird rear shock absorbers

I fondly recall being 14, rallying around exactly the same kind of roads on the island of Hitra, on the Norwegian coast, full speed into the turns, 'nipping' ever so lightly on the handbrake to execute the perfect turn - and _full throttle_ again! - Also a fabulous driving machine in the winter, the one I drove was the 67' two-stroke, 3-cyl, 3-carb, with the wooden steering wheel - _and:_ *_diagonal_* tires! . . . . Those were the days! . . . . 🙂👌
