Great episode! The explanations on handling different spins with short pushes are super helpful. Thanks for the tips!

Are you tighten your grip when receive any serves?

I suppose a little bit in the hand, but without trying to have too much tension in the wrist, if that makes sense.

Got 8/10 - misread the two first reverse pendulum serves, which fits into my usual problems with those because I've never had a practice partner who could perform them

My flick is a lot more powerful with a focus on adding more hip rotation into the shot. This allows a more relaxed stroke.

Some suggestions for serve videos: 1. Use balls with extra marks to see the spin 2. Perhaps postpone disguising to the next step. Like for me there is no point to disguise as I still struggle to add any significant backspin with reverse serve. Side or side-top is much easier to do. Thank you.

I can see you are wearing kneecaps in this match. Can you tell us more about it? I do personally struggle with knees due to table tennis, maybe you have more information how to cope with it.

I like keep a carbon blade around just to periodically try it out and convince myself once again that I definitely don't have the skills to play fast and hard material. That being said, using H3 on the forehand has been a net positive for me.

Great Content Olav. This is one of the least applied skills in table tennis among the none so-pro players. Whoever aims to receive like this can pad himself in the back that he is about to step up from a casual player to a much better player. M. Maze does this great but since he is a lefty, most people cannot learnfrom him much.
@OlavKTTT
@OlavKTTT 27 күн бұрын
Why do you think that you can't learn from him just because he doesn't play with the same hand as you? Seems strange... I didn't just learn table tennis from Boll, Maze, Chen Qi and Gatien... just mirror what opposite-handed players do, a lot of those things are universal principles (such as short receive techniques).

Can you make a video about how to recieve a fast long backhand service. As a lefty, my righthy opponents usually use this serve to put more pressure on me during 9-9 or deuce?

Thank you for the video. The explanations were nice, however it is hard for me to connect the explanations with your demonstrations, because of these two reasons: 1) The other player on the table is not shown. I see what you are doing, but I do not see what the other guy is doing. Therefore, it is hard for me to judge what exact spin is on the ball, when you receive it. I would include the other guy into the camera view, otherwise the demonstration is kind of incomplete. 2) For me, as a right-hander, it is quite difficult to apply what you demonstrate to my game because I need to mirror everything you show in my head. If you are showing how you receive a backspin pendulum serve with your forehand, I need to mirror it in my head and imagine where I should stand and how I should receive the same serve with a backhand. This is quite challenging to do and it makes your videos much harder to watch for me, and probably for the majority of right-handed players too. It would be great if you mirrored the video and showed the original version and the mirrored version for left- and right- handers at the same time. I know that the same type of spin can be produced by different serves and therefore I can just image a different type of serve for me as a righ-hander, however, it is just hard for my brain to do. The video would be much easier to watch if the mirroring was shown in the video directly.

I watched this twice. You mentioned the pure sidespin serve and then you went on about no spin, downspin and got away from the sidespin.Would be better if you showed a server serving a side spin serve then show how you counter. Too many words and not enough pictures.
@OlavKTTT
@OlavKTTT Ай бұрын
Hey, I can't please everyone I guess. But if you're confused, the same principles apply as how I demonstrated it, i.e. open your wrist a little and keep your shoulders closed. With pure sidespin, you're opening your wrist less than on a side-topspin serve, but more than on a side-backspin serve. You'll also have to push your shoulders more forward than on a backspin serve, but a bit less than on topspin. Pretty logical if you think about it, since a pure sidespin serve is in the middle of the spectrum of those serves.

Hi Olav, did you see Ma Long Wang Chuqin game just now? Ma completely changed his game from banana flicks, reverse pendulum serves (harder to banana flick fast as lefty i think) and controlling from the BH a lot more, hitting that angle to wide FH was just fantastic. Would be a good one for an analysis video for you

I agree with you generally that equipment should not be the focus for players in general. The blade should something that provides reasonable control and the rubbers should be good quality. After that you should learn how your equipment behaves during play and adapt to it. Maybe six months with the same rubber and blade and having made progress in your playing level you might consider changing something that is lacking in the equipment for your playing style; yet you should only change one thing at a time. Different blade? Stay with the same rubbers. Change rubber? Only one side of the rubber, fh or bh keep the same rubber on one side while changing rubber on the other and keeping the same blade. I started playing when there were only two real choices in high performance rubbers, Sriver or Mark V. I had Sriver yet when I joined a club every higher level player there was using Mark V, so I tried Mark V. Should have stuck with the Sriver as it suited me better than Mark V. What other people are playing with really doesn't matter.

I was with you until you said tacky rubbers wear out faster. They tend to stay stickier so do you mean sponge softening, delamination? I know decent players who use a tacky rubber a long time. I find they're better with a lot of breaking in.

Another concern for me is that weight has turned out to be a great issue for amateurs. We can't simple yield setups over 190grms otherwise we might end up being injured with such super heavily combos. Anything roughly 47 degree on FH and a couple of agrees less on BH should fit the bit for 95% amateurs/recreational players.

I really do enjoy playing Hybrid K3 (which probably is one of the rubbers you are referring to) on both sides despite being a hobby player. But indeed, they just don't last long enough and I don't want to put on new rubbers each month. So I am searching for new rubbers for next season...

Do you recommend to have something different between FH and BH ? For Exemple 42° FH and 40° BH ? Or for amateur it's better to have the same ?

I agree with your point. I used to try all kind of different rubbers and blades. Alot of them because they were used by pros. This caused me to be never satisfied with whatever I was playing with. Nowadays I don’t buy any of the pros equipment anymore. I go by the rule: “If a pro is playing with a rubber or blade, then its not for me”.
