Hi M! Great lesson. How's your back doing? Starting from impact has been one of the best things for me. The funny thing is that as you get older the winter golf swing slowly becomes your summer swing. Doesn't happen overnight but over time you develop the same mobility restrictions as if you have layers of coats on. Winter golf is a good time to learn smooth short low flighted shots. It's really is okay to give up yards for accuracy. 😎👍

Answering your question, because you want a steeper angle of attack at the ball (I’m in slight rough here too so want to avoid too much grass before ball) to get spin control and this mean out to in.. a slice swing. This means keeping the face open to avoid it closing and the ball coming out low and left.. you want it to also land as soft as possible. Hence the open stance, out to it (across the ball) swing path, with an open face to compensate. Nice high t and soft landing with a steep attack to minimalise grass before the ball contact. 👍🏼

@@garyvale8347 I’m guessing mental. If you’re happy with nice striking and 10 from 10 good results on the range then it’ll be mental strength. Try this next time you’re on the range: Pick an accurate target at this range you don’t like for real on the course. Then imagine water short. Have 15 balls in front of you (not the whole bucket). Then tell yourself the goal is all shots across the water and you can’t fail on any. Hi Murdoch! Great content. Gosh I could write a book on lower back issues and golf from personal experience. I definitely like the narrow stance, smaller swing /less power (especially at the top to reduce separation), and turn the key with the left hand is brilliant mental image of the strike. Keep your hands in front of the body. Not sure about the right foot back but each person and swing is different. For me it's opposite and adds impingement, but I'm also a reverse C slider. Stay calm, quiet, and behind the ball. Forget power, this is about being able to play or not play at all. The other thing that's helped me probably the most is physical training. Not just stretching, actually core training. I personally do a modified power lifting workout without the squats. Deadlifts help the most BUT you must have solid form, flat strong back set (no rounding, stay well below your limits, 3 x 5 reps only ). Mobility: leg swings, shouldered strength and mobility (oddly enough, tight limited shoulders is the cause of most lower back pain according to a golf PT trainer I worked with), light stretching of hams and piriformis is required.. There's probably a lot more and I could go on and on. Glad to see you back out. Let it recover.
