There was only 4.9 million population in Australia in 1914, during the years of WW1 1914 - 1919, only a increase of 5303 in population, 416,809 men enlisted, which was 38.7% of the male population between the ages of 18 and 44 , of them 60,000 died in action, with another 156,000 men wounded, gassed, or taken prisoner, which added together was 50% of our total force, my family lost my Great Uncle Ted, he enlisted as a 15 year old with forge paperwork.

An Aussie Rules football is smaller than a rugby ball (slimmer, not shorter) but bigger than an NFL football.

In 2002, I was sitting in a bar in New Orleans a day or so after they had elected their new governor. Two blokes near me were complaining about their first female governor being elected. I ask them if they had voted and they both said NO. So I asked how they can be complaining about the result if they hadn't used their right to have a say. Blank looks from them.

Ah, the choko. Used for many years as a filling agent in such things as jams and fruit pies. It was used a lot during the war years when food was short due to rationing. Eg. Jam could be made with half the fruit required and the rest was choko as it took on the flavour and texture of what it was cooked with.

A lot of Aussie slang is sarcastic, like calling redheads 'blue'. "Buckleys" chance originated from a department store in Melbourne in the 1800's named "Buckleys and Nunn".... work it out.

The phrase flat out like a lizard drinking refers to the rapid tongue movement of a lizard when it drinks. The lizard's tongue and the lizard itself are both going "flat out" which originated in the 1930s.

My family growing up has always called Christmas Crackers "Bon Bons" and my wife's family growing up was the same - Both different parts of NSW. I don't think we call them Christmas Crackers, unless it differs by region? Also, what are Sugar Cookies? Never heard of them. I've eaten biscuits that have sugar on them I guess. I didn't really think they were a Christmas thing though.

Moving from Canada to Australia, I find Australian drivers awful. In addition to the usual bad-aggressive type of driving you get with BMW drivers, idiots speeding through red lights, etc, there's an additional annoyance of bad-wimpy drivers. For example, you go driving on the weekend and there's not much traffic, but you get blocked by people in all 3 or 4 lanes going 60km/h in an 80km/h zone. Aussies don't seem to recognize fast lanes and slow lanes like that. You get the people who leave 5 car lengths between them and the car in front of them when there is a right-turn signal (the equivalent of left-turn signals most countries) so only two cars get through, so you have to wait through 2 or 3 lights to make your turn. You get the people who slow down to make a turn BEFORE merging into the turn lane, no matter how empty or lengthy that turn lane is, so you miss the green light because you're stuck behind someone slowing down to 30 or 20 to make their turn half a block away while refusing to go into the perfectly empty lane beside them until the last possible second. You get people who slow down to a crawl because there is a red light a block ahead because they're in no hurry to get to the red light, meanwhile preventing people in the line of traffic behind them from making the green light farther back on time. And all the above bad drivers are more the rule than the exception. And, of course, what does this do? It encourages the idiot BMW drivers, etc, to be even more aggressive and careless. I find driving in Melbourne far more frustrating than I ever found driving on the 401 near Toronto (the busiest highway in the world, moreso than the LA freeway) because of all the wimpy Aussie drivers. Mad Max is a myth.

Lizards need to watch out for predators when they are on their bellies drinking so, as well as concentrating on drinking they need to turn their heads continuously watching out for the predators. They are very busy doing these two things at once.
