I had this done (IOL implant) three years ago. In general I am happy. But one thing has persisted...I have one dry eye and have to use drops regularly. LASIK was a choice I didn't choose because it thins the cornea, and if later you want an IOL it increases the danger. I also have monovision so one eye is close and one far. Dr. said this is just something your brain gets used to, but it took MY brain longer (like a year) to feel comfortable with it. In hindsight (no pun intended) I don't think I would have done mono. It messed up my 3D vision.

Thanks for the comprehensive review. * Is a laser used to clean/ vaporize the topical cells and residue on the interior surface of the secondary capsule/ capsular bag? * Did the Left Eye Surgeon know which optical model the Right Eye Surgeon used prior to your left eye surgery? * Mentioned: A second doctor's full IOL measurement would have prevented my right eye wrong correction problems. => I thought using the wrong model was the problem. * When measurements were being taken, was one of the optometric analyzers an recent model OCT/ Optical Coherence Tomography? These can now measure several cell layers thick into the retinal and choroid. That should eliminate most of the guesswork in an eye model assumptions and simplify calculations for optimizing the IOL.
@tsbrownie
@tsbrownie Күн бұрын
* The laser breaks up the rear part of the capsular bag. * I don't think the 2 surgeons communicated. One is considered the local expert, the other just another ophthalmologist. They have their pecking order. * The wrong model choice was based on the measurements. So measurements are the input to the model. If the measurements are confusing to the doctor, and they are randomly trying to fit one model to them, that's a warning sign. * The second doctor used laser interferometry during surgery, after the natural lens had been removed. At this time, this seems to be the optimal solution.

Hello. I got a boombox with an analog tuner from a friend. It does not play any FM station with no static noise. Stereo light comes on. It has a new antenna. FM stations’ signals are good because my other tuners have no problem. Inside the boombox is like new. Antenna cable is connected to the pcb. I cleaned all the switches and pots with contact spray. It has one of those little variable tuning capacitor in a plastic see-thru square with 4 screws on it. I played with the tuner cap screws but it did not get any better so I put them back to the initial position. The tuner cap may not be set properly because the tuning needle does not show the proper station frequency. What can be the issue? How can I tune the cap? TY

For testing the coil differences (different from testing the complete radio) have you considered using a signal source such as a signal generator with an AM feature? This will allow you to compare coil performance with a set of known signals which will give a comparable base line. I use this method to evaluate component changes more objectively - especially as AM reception in my area is quite bleak during the day time (only one 500W station locally).

About the "too much inductance issue". If you bring the turns closer together, the inductance increases. This suggests that each section of your coil should have fewer turns when you scramble wind. There is going to be a secondary effect where the best place for the tap to the diode moves as you change the coil design. You are sort of doing an impedance matching. Too many turns and the detector circuit loads the system and kills you selectivity. Too few and the sensitivity is bad.

The bobbin seems to be acrylic, which should have little effect on the inductance, but it's hard to predict what kinds of plastic will interfere with the inductor. You might need to 3d print a bobbin to test against. A printed one would also give the advantage that you can make the divider only 1 mm and exclude the separation distance of the 2 halves as an additional trouble spot.

@@franzliszt3195 Yes, since you are keeping the wires further apart, the large diameter coil tends to have less capacitance. L = (0.2 * A^2 * N^2) / (3*A + 9*B + 10*C) where: ^2 means squared A is the diameter in inches of the middle of the winding B is the length in inches C is the thickness of the windings (Former surface to top of windings) N is the number of turns. L is inductance in uH For a coil that is more than 3 times longer than its diameter, increases in diameter increases inductance faster than linear. I suggest using a different radio circuit. The usual radio circuit using coupled inductors for impedance matching, but there's an analogous circuit that uses a capacitor network with a single inductor. In fact, I have it working on my desk right now! Instead of tapping the inductor side of the LC resonator, tap the capacitor side. That is, put two capacitors in series, those parallel with the inductor. I'm using 150 pF between the antenna input and ground, with a 10-400 pF variable capacitor between input and the top of the inductor. My inductor is 40T on a 3" cardboard form (salt box). My diode comes right off the top of the inductor. Since this design uses only a single inductor (200 uH, if I've calculated in right), you should be able to use an SMD inductor in its place. The impedance of a coax cable will be either 50 or 75 ohms, which is much lower than the impedance at the end of a long-wire antenna. If your outdoor antenna is a wire dipole, then it should drive the cable efficiently, but then your radio needs to be designed to match to the cable impedance. That means relatively few turns (like 1-4!) on the antenna link coil. Or, design for a tapped-C feed in to the resonator. (I'm driving a tapped-C crystal radio with 50-ohm cable to a dipole antenna that I use to transmit on the 80m amateur band; seems to work.) By the way, if you have a dipole antenna, you don't need a ground. The signal voltage is between the center and shield of the cable, not between antenna and earth.

I wouldn't have guessed the 2 coils would perform that way. Interesting results. It would be interesting to test where the self-resonant frequency is for the small coils and larger coil. your function generator and oscilloscope could test it. The further away from the medium band the better. Another curious thing is, do you get a a noticeable difference in reception if you orient your coils vertically? If your external antenna is doing most of the reception, the null-ing effect should be minimized. Also, could your external antenna being wound in a loop be creating a series inductance that is hurting the Q of circuit?

When I made my 4 foot X 4 foot tuned antenna, I used #14 wire which is a lot thicker than most people use in coils. I did discover, however, that I needed to go to a lower inductance and greater capacitance than than I thought was correct to get the biggest amplitude. Unloaded, it would make well over 1V on the scope. BTW: On a rocket radio I took apart, the slug's position was adjusted with a long thin brass threaded rod. The nose cone was glued onto the rod. To store it, you threaded the thing all the way in. To tune stations, you would thread the rod out. The treads worked on a metal cap on the end of the inductor's tube. If you are going for a small radio, that method may be better than a variable capacitor Even the ones they used in the early transistor radios would be about as large as the inductor part of the radio. You could make the coil on the outer housing of the radio and fit the capacitor within the inside of the coil as another option. Very conductive objects in a coil reduce the inductance without dropping the Q much.The plates can be arranged so that one dimension is along the major axis of the coil to reduce that effect.

I've greatly enjoyed these various experiments with different wire gauges and types of coil forms so much that I ordered some #31 AWG wire and the plastic sewing machine bobbins to try the experiments for myself. I had the 1.65" diameter PVC tubing already. The wire came earlier this week but the bobbins only finally arrived today. I wound the bobbin using the #31 wire, trying to use the same technique with the variable speed drill and moving the wire back and forth on the bobbin. I didn't measure the wire, just wound what I thought was enough. The turned out to be over 1000 uH so I had to unwind quite a bit, I first got down to 513 uH and tested that--that had way too much inductance to cover the MW band (It wouldn't tune above about 1100 kHz) so I unwound more turns and finished with 222 uH which worked fine. I am extremely fortunate to own an HP4342A Q meter so tested all the coils on that--its variable cap goes from 20-470 pF. The bobbin coil at 550 kHz had a low Q of 17; at 1680 kHz it had even lower Q of only 8. As the video showed, it didn't receive anything in the crystal set. I then wound a PVC coil with the #31 wire, trying to emulate the small coil used in the video--my coil ended up with 203 uH. At 550 kHz it had a Q of 121; at 1700 kHz a Q of 83. As the video showed, this one worked moderately well in the crystal set. I wound another coil with #20 wire on the 1.65" dia. form, this had 221 uH. At 550 kHz its Q was 181; at 1700 kHz the Q was 276. This is unusual in my experience to have a Q that has a much higher Q at the top of the MW band--this is good! As the video showed, this is the reference coil for the crystal radio. (I used the DER DE-5000 LCR meter at 100 kHz test frequency for the inductance measurements.) Lots of fun doing my own tests and my thanks to TSB for doing these experiments and showing us the results that motivated me to do some tests of my own!

@steveratzlaff Thank you for posting your results. The confirmation of one's results is always a good thing. I'm envious of your Q meter. I'm looking into a new LCR meter, but even those aren't cheap.

@steveratzlaff Spoiler, I just finished a scatter wound coil on the 1.65" pipe that is 7mm long. Total wire length, including 1.3x for scattering, was 9.36 meters. It was a bear to wind (and rewind multiple times). We shall see. I think I might also try a straight wind on an 8mm diameter core like the bobbin, but it would have to be 20 cm long!

@@tsbrownie Should I assume you used the #31 wire for this new coil? If not, what gauge was used?
