Am I the only one who loves the wonderful movie, *"The Rare Breed",* with Jimmy Stewart & Maureen O'Hara? It isn't a cinematic masterpiece, but it's great story. Honestly, I can't see a Hereford bull without hearing someone whistling, "God Save the Queen" (for "Vindicator").

@@susancoulange382 I love how "Bulldog" (Jimmy Stewart) makes Martha's and Hilary's dream his own, as if it meant more than beef breeding practices on the US prairie. I think it is about all the socially Darwinist, eugenic propaganda we have heard so much about all our lives, and how "meat headed" a social Darwinist/eugenicist is. In that vein, I love how it makes fun of the boorish, Scottish rancher, Bowen, the man played by Brisn Keith, as the ranch owner and Jamie's father. He just comes off so gross, dull hearted and foolish, and their dream of _Vindicator_ making it through the winter is the hope of proving him wrong about every foolish, inhumane thing he preaches. When _Vindicator_ is found under the snow, it is really sad. But when Bulldog finds his calf, his genes were "vindicated", after all, proving that he did have the good genetic stuff, but must have the help of being crossed with tougher cattle to make it safely through Texas winters. And there's delicious irony that the creature whose genetics are in question is of British cattle extraction, bred for a surviving in a British, Gulf Stream winter, but where it gets much colder, they need help to survive. All the good, beefy, well-behaved characteristics of the breed, can't make it without the help of the strength of others. The British are among the top three of socially Darwinistic people, historically being just a little superior in their own eyes. Darwin was even an Englishman, as were Malthus, Spenser, Lyell, the Huxleys, and quite a few of the others. They like to think they are the "crown of creation", no less that Germany making themselves the _"ubermenschen",_ the final, evolved form of the Aryans. I'm probably more tempermentally akin to _Vindicator's_ British reserve, but it's deeply satisfying in a way, to see him have to overcome his weaknesses to survive, and great when he survives through his offspring, showing Bowen he was mostly wrong. His arrogant demand that Martha _give up all hope,_ "face reality", and accept him as her only realistic choice (for a husband she wasnt looking for), is just great for her to think better of, and to see her way out of that. I could keep on talking about it, but I will quit rattling on. And, er, "spoiler alert".

My grandpa was honored as a golden breeder by the hereford association before he passed away. A hereford man through and through. You can’t beat the hereford breed. Beautiful, well growing and nearly always gentle and predictable personalities.

I was very impressed with Eddie Watson, the seller. He let the bull sniff out the strange trailer and take his time getting into the trailer. I dislike seeing animals forced into strange situations about which they know nothing. And am impressed even more hearing Eddie's concern that he sells you the right bull and provide you with as much info as possible!

I noticed when the bull backed up he pulled the gate back to give him room and then the bull went right in. They don't like to be pushed. We always put fresh nice hay in our trailer before we loaded cows, it seemed to make it easier to load them. It also helps if its not the first trailer ride of their lives. Our calves went to the vet for their vaxes as we had a vet with a great set up that would have us come on a day he had others coming that day so we didn't pay for more shots than we got.

Good morning. Welcome Watson! I remember being a small child and my family having a bull like that! His name was Tony. Of course, being a small child, Tony used to scare the heck out of me! He used to be penned up in the open corral beside the barn and ram his butt against the gate to try and get out! My sister who was a few years older than myself and I would be on the farm by ourselves while all of the rest of the family, 12 in total were out in the sugar beet field. We used to run and hide in the tiny house. He never did get out or hurt us but seeing Watson reminded me of a time, besides the antics Tony used to get up to, of a super happy time for me! Living in a mild climate, we always kept our bulls with the herd all the time. Yes, we had calves at various times during the year, but it just didn't matter. I love cattle, but they can be rough on fences!
