Do not grind the corn. Feed milk for first 10-12 weeks and Get the calves on corn and veal pellet as soon as possible. We raise veal all the time. You can have market ready calves in 7 months.

Yep. Should grind the corn. Whole kernel corn will most likely pass straight through those calves and they won’t get much out of it. I’d probably buy a complete starter feed pellet for those newborns/young calves. My two cents

interesting comment about hutches. I bought 15 hutches 30 years ago for 500 each, sold all of them 6 years ago for 300 each. they were sold before I could even place an ad. Enjoy your videos and love your practical style of dairy farming. Keep up the good work, your cows look super comfy.

We used to feed about one hundred bull calves a year. We had our own calves plus we bought some from neighbours. We fed them high moisture corn and a product called Tenderleen. We raised to about seven hundred pounds. Best meat that I have ever eaten. If you have any questions feel free to contact me. Thanks for showing us your cows again. Be safe and have fun.

There is more money in a 8 day old calf than a calf you raised for 2-3 months and then sell for veal.

Great video Ben, such is a day on a dairy farm. You go from one job to the next with surprise fixes thrown in you didn't expect. I always love seeing the cows in your videos. Nice to see that you got to do something for your own enjoyment, playing hockey. Love your channel and look forward to every new video. I'm still going back through the older ones.

I thought that too. A battery operated leaf blower would get the majority of the snow off for you. Farming, you always have to be planning for the future (ordering seed), getting equipment ready for the next season, as well as the daily routine chores like feed mixing, feeding the animals, cleaning barns and milking. We can't say there are too many days that are boring. Great video Ben!
@PondbankFarms7 күн бұрын
Yes , maybe next time I'll try that! I didn't think of that. Yes it's crazy, as soon as you done harvesting gotta already be ordering seeds for the next year.

I was curious about adding water to the tmr is that for consistency of the mix or to bring the moisture content up to a certain percentage?
@PondbankFarms7 күн бұрын
It's to add more consistency and it also hold the feed together better and help to prevent sorting.

Aramid fiber (Kevlar) V-ee belts don't seem to stretch quite as much as Polyester (Dacron) reinforced belts. But they cost more. Belt slippage isn't always a bad thing (in moderation) as it provides a "slip-clutch" function for the machine. A chain drive is positive (no slippage) but in a serious jam could destroy that expensive worm-gear right-angle drive which (probably) has either a brass "worm" or a brass spur gear working on the worm. A good compromise would be twin v-ee belts. Ideally MATCHED sets on such a short length of belts. Chains operating in abrasive grain dust are constant maintainence and you'd be crawlin' up that elevator "ladder" frequently with your trusty oil spray. I enjoyed the video (although I DID have to go put another "layer" on and freshen up the woodstove after looking at all that white stuff...)
@PondbankFarms7 күн бұрын
You bring up some interesting points. And I'll look into the different kinds of belts. Thanks for the comment and all the info and ideas.

Wow Ben, don't know how you manage to keep everything you have to do organized in your head. You are always working non stop on something, and even take the time to share it with us. I do remember that's the way it is on a farm and you have to be versatile because whatever needs to be done, you have to know how to do it, or who to contact if you don't. I think what I enjoy most about your videos is that you always speak with such a positive tone. You are just a very likeable person, someone who would be a good friend. I hope the pit pumping worked out like you wanted, I'm sure you will let us know. And, I love your humor talking about the directors of the show writing the script. I look forward to every new video Ben, your channel is great. In a future sequence, could you have your brother or Dad talk about the farm breeding program and heifer raising. I'm always amazed at how beautiful your cows look. Thanks.
