I learned to crochet at a young age (likely to keep us children quiet and busy 😅), but learned to knit much much later in life. I enjoy both, especially making useful handmade gifts for the kids and grandkids.

@jacqknits Congrats! I know you're going to be busy making things, booties, hats, onesies, etc. Maybe those can be be some tutorials too. I think homemade gifts mean more as they come from labour of love. They're also a happy surprise and the giggles I hear from the kids make it worth it.

How many cast on stitches do you recommend if using bulky yarn?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 2 күн бұрын
Thanks for your question. I have not made this pattern with a bulky yarn, so I don't know an exact answer. You may need to do a bit trial and error. For this stitch pattern you have to cast on a multiple of 5 stitches plus 2. So for my worsted weight sample I casted on 32 stitches with US size 6 needle. I would suggest starting with a cast on of 27 stitches with your bulky yarn and a larger needle (maybe US size 9). I would knit up a rectangle swatch and then wrap it around your wrist to see how that feels. If that is still too many stitches, drop it down by another five to 22 stitches. I hope that helps give you a starting point to determine the exact number of cast on stitches.

How many stitches to cast on of each color?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 3 күн бұрын
For this video I was just doing a simple swatch of knitting in the round, so it wasn't for a specific project, so there is no specific number of stitches to cast on. Generally though when casting on for double knitting you will need to cast on a PAIR of stiches for each cast on stitch. So for example if you are knitting a hat in the round and normally you would cast on 60 stitches, you will need to cast on 60 PAIR of stitches. 60 of one color plus 60 of the other color. You will have a total of 120 stitches on your needle. 60 of the front color and 60 of the back color. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for reaching out.

Great insight, thanks a lot for sharing ! Indeed, as a knitter it took me a lot (!) to build up the courage to get out of my comfort zone. 2 years ago I was like “crochet ? Very detailed information. Greatly appreciate. What size circular needles should be invested in to knit adult hat and mittens?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 7 күн бұрын
Thank you. For knitting with magic loop you can use any long circular needle. I would recommend a 40" circular needle which can be used for any size magic loop project. If you are using primarily worsted weight yarn I would go with either a US6 (4mm), US7 (4.5mm) or US8 (5mm) size needle. The smaller needles will give a more denser finished piece and the larger more loose. Here is a link to my favorite 40" circular needle I use. It comes in all needle sizes: amzn.to/4cApdtd Happy knitting!

Yes you do. The only exception is if you are knitting a straight garter stitch or stockinette stitch. If that is the case you can just use the first and last stitch as these selvage stitches. But anything with a stitch pattern you will need to add those two stitches.

I love this pattern and the beautiful edges. I also watched your other video on creating beautiful edges. I have followed along with your video and instructions at least 10 times and have to keep starting over, because I keep getting an extra stitch at the end of the right row. I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. I believe I am following along exactly, except your video cuts off before ending your right side row... I end up with an extra stitch... brioche stitch then two single stitches at the end. Then when starting the wrong side, I have three single stitches before the first brioche. Is it something obvious that I am doing wrong?
@jacqknits
@jacqknits 22 күн бұрын
Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry you having trouble here. I just did a swatch of this stitch to confirm that my instructions are correct in the video. Here are a couple things you can look out for to ensure you are ending up with the correct number of stitches: 1. Be sure you are casting on an even number of stitches. When you count your stitches after knitting a row, count the brioche stitch as one stitch. 2. The start of each row should alway be two single stitches followed by the brioche stitch, and the end of your rows should always be one single stitch proceeded by the brioche stitch. 3. Be sure you are remembering to do your yarn over stitches throughout your stitch pattern. Especially don't forget the first yarn over. It is the 2nd stitch you are doing to start each row. It's an easy one to forget. The first stitch is a knit stitch for the right side row or a purl stitch for a wrong side row. Then the first step of your stitch sequence is a yarn over. 4. Verify that you are doing your yarn overs and your slip stitches correctly as to which direction you are doing the yarn overs and where your yarn is when doing the slip stitches. Yarn overs should have you wrapping the yarn over the top of your needle, not from underneath. 5. It appears that somehow you are creating an extra single stitch at the beginning of your wrong side row. Double check that your first few stitches are as follows: P1, YO, Sl1, BRK1. Look back then at what you just completed. It should be a single stitch, a brioche stitch and a single stitch. Then continue with the YO, Sl1, BRK1 sequence. You should be ending your row with that YO, Sl1, BRK1 sequence and then have one stitch remaining which you will slip. I hope this helps. I was trying to reproduce what you were seeing with your stitch count, but was not seeing it on my end.

Then about the 16:35 mark in the video I explain how to knit both colors in the same row bringing the yarn to the front and back. So both methods are shown here in this video. I call the first the slow and easy method and the second way the faster, but more difficult method (difficult for beginner knitters).

@jacqknits
@jacqknits Ай бұрын
Its always hard to say exactly how many stitches will work well without doing a trial to see if it fits well. I would suggest for a 3 weight yarn to use a size US 4 or 5 needle. You will want to cast on a number divisible by 12. I would first try casting on 108 stitches to see how that fits. The hat I made is a bit large so you may find that sticking with 96 stitches may be good as well. You can also go up or down in your needle size to make an adjustment. It will also depend a bit on your tension. I hope that gives you a starting point. Feel free to share here what worked for you. Happy knitting. 🧶

@jacqknits
@jacqknits Ай бұрын
Hello and thanks for the questions. When I cast on I do not start with a slip knot. I find that just creates a bulky knot at the start of your cast on that isn't necessary. Rather the first wrap of the yarn over the needle creates that first stitch. For more instructions on casting on you can refer to my video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5KzZ5xoZ9h1r6c As for the yarn and needle, I'm using a worsted weight yarn (usually identified with a "4" on the package for this weight of yarn). You would normally use about a size 7 or 8 needle for that weight but because I want the mitten to be a bit more dense and warmer for when complete I went down a couple needle sizes to a size 6. That makes for a tighter knitted mitten and give it a bit more warmth. Hope that answers your questions. Have fun.
